ROUND 4 ROUND 5 Melville 41 – University 10 TDO Melville produced a terrific all-round performance to comfortably beat Metalco Recyclers University by five tries to one at Collins Road. Halfback Kylem O'Donnell continued his good early season form and scored a double, while kicker Mike Martin converted all five tries and added two penalties. The match was effectively over by halftime with the home side already up 27-3, with University's only try of the day a late consolation effort from prop Tau Koloamatangi. Hamilton Old Boys 24 – Hautapu 22 Old Boys backed up from their narrow win over Tech to claim a similarly tight victory over Hautapu at Fred Jones Park. First five Bryn Gatland stood out for the home side with a commanding performance. He was one of three try scorers for Old Boys, along with flankers Mungo Mason and Rupeni Tamani. Hautapu fought back strongly in the second half after a slow start to the match but it was too little, too late, despite three tries from centre Josh Gascoigne, prop Dan Ross and wing Chris Colvin, as they slipped to a second narrow loss. Otorohanga 62 – United Matamata Sports 22 Reid & Harrison United Matamata Sports found the trip to Island Reserve tough going as OTC Otorohanga ran in 10 tries for a big bonus point win. First five Te Hata Wilbore scored and hat-trick for the home side and second five Joe Perawiti bagged a double. Fullback Te Amo Wilbore also scored twice and kicked six conversions for a personal tally of 22 points. Matamata were competitive in the first half, down 26-15 at the break, but the home side powered away late in the match. The visitor's tries were scored by backs Chris Croasdale, Sharman Emery and Michael Autridge. Hamilton Marist 25 – Melville 12 Marist put in a strong performance on their home ground to hand Melville their first loss of the season. Prop Lionel Wairau, hooker Steven Misa and centre Niko Malo scored Marist's three tries as they kicked on from a 10-7 halftime lead to claim the four points. Melville managed a try in each half, from wingers Harry Lafituanai and Atu Masirewa, but in the end came away with no points as Marist finished the stronger of the two sides. Hamilton Marist 22 – Morrinsville Sports 17 Lodge City Rentals Hamilton Marist edged Nottingham Castle Morrinsville Sports late in their match at Campbell Park as the home side were beaten in the dying moments for the second straight game. The visitors were outscored two tries to one with wing Leigh Bristowe getting their only five-pointer, but halfback Michael Walsh was accurate off the tee with a conversion and four penalties. Morrinsville, with a try to Semisi Masirewa and 12 points from Josh O'Flaherty (try, two conversions and a penalty), held the lead for much of the game until the late surge from Marist. Hamilton Old Boys 20 - Fraser Tech 19 The Local Hamilton Old Boys recorded a much needed win over Fraser Tech at Mill Street after three straight losses to start the season. Trailing 13-7 at the break, it looked like it may be another loss for the red and blacks, but a strong second half got them over the line. Their points came from tries to backs Aleki Kisina and Regan Ware, and 10 points from Bryn Gatland's boot. Tech's Japanese winger Kanzo Nakahama scored Tech's only try in the first half, with the rest of their points coming from kickers Jordan Trainor and Matt Lansdown. Te Awamutu Sports 23 - Hautapu 20 The Battle of the Waipa turned out to be a classic local derby, with Ecolab Te Awamutu Sports coming away from Memorial Park with a narrow victory over APL Direct Hautapu. First five Nathan George led the way for the visitors with a try, two conversion and three penalties. Hooker Norman Solofa scored Te Awamutu's other try. Hautapu scored one more try than Te Awamutu, with forwards David Morris, Luke Jacobson and Mike Tomsett dotting down, and led at halftime, but a strong second half from the visitors secured the win. Otorohanga 33 – Morrinsville Sports 13 Otorohanga made it two Easter Weekend bonus point wins with their victory over Morrinsville as Campbell Park, which moves them to top spot on the table. Lock Josh Ferguson scored twice for Otorohanga with fullback Te Amo Wilbore, loose forward Anthony Wise and second five Joe Perawiti also scoring. Flanker Shaun Peek scored a second half try for the home side but they were unable to stop the visitors once they cranked into gear late in the match. Te Awamutu Sports 38 - United Matamata Sports 14 Te Awamutu climbed their way into the top four with a six tries to two win over bottom of the table Matamata at Albert Park. Backs Esera Esera and John Collier both scored doubles for Te Awamutu who shot out to a 24-7 lead at halftime and comfortably held on, despite not putting in their most polished effort. Matamata fought hard throughout the 80 minutes and were unlucky not to have kept the scoreline a lot closer. They managed a try in each half from outside backs Sam Brill and Rewiti Vaimoso. University 14 - Fraser Tech 8 University held off a stern challenge from Fraser Tech to retain the Stag Trophy at the Waikato University grounds. First five Jason Robertson was again in the thick of the action for the students, as he scored a try and kicked two penalties to give the home side an 11-8 halftime lead. Tech's points came via a try to midfield back Naoya Minamihashi and a penalty from Matt Lansdown, while Robertson's third penalty of the day was the only scoring of the second half. For draws, results and points tables for all grades go to http://draws.nzrugby.co.nz/competitions/Default.aspx Answering some of the frequently asked questions that have arisen on the Waikato club rugby sidelines. Q. Why are Chiefs Development XV games played on random dates? A. The Chiefs set the dates and times for these games. The Chiefs consult with the four provincial unions on this process but occasionally (like their present tour to Hong Kong) games arise after the provincial unions have decided draws. The Chiefs also try to set games at certain times for their Development XV in order to fit in with the senior team's schedule. The WRU acknowledge it is difficult for players and clubs alike but both organisations are working hard to align as much as possible. Q. Why are Division Two scores not listed on social media? A. The WRU are only able to post results on social media that are received from the clubs involved. This includes when there has been no result due to a default which has been the case a number of times in this grade. The WRU are continually working with Division Two teams to help improve the communication process. If you have any other club rugby questions drop Bill Heslop a line at [email protected].
