MARIST COLLEGE Catholic School for Girls Term 4 - Number 4 7th November, 2014 YEARS 7 TO 13 FROM THE PRINCIPAL KEY DATES WEEK 5 (A) Dear Parents and Guardians The Senior Prizegiving and the Leaver’s Liturgy were wonderful occasions where we reflected on the school year, celebrated as a school community, and acknowledged our top achievers. There were also many special tributes to our Year 13 leavers as they embark on the next stage of their journey including an assembly run by Year 12 students, a special tutor group celebration, liturgy and dinner with staff and parents. The leaver’s bears, designed by Year 12 students are perhaps the highlight of these farewell traditions. Without a mentor in life, one can easily become selfcentered, capricious and unsure. A true mentor is one who enables us to remember their mentees name, face and aspirations. A true mentor is one who gives up their time willingly to help their fellow foe. She is the mentor who has helped you to perceive your own weaknesses and confront them with courage. She is the mentor, you have looked to for advice in times of diversity and dilemma. The bond between a mentor and mentee enables you to stay true to your chosen path until the very end. The bond between a mentor and mentee shows mutual respect for one another’s points of view, is non-judgmental and open to reason. A mentor’s role isn’t merely a matter of just meeting up and talking. What counts is the depth of your concern for your mentee and your sincerity of your interactions. Thank-you to all the Year 12 & 13 senior mentors for all your hard work with our Year 7 & 8 mentees. You are true Marist women. verse by Daisaku Ikeda (re-edited by Mrs Tagomoa) TRIBUTE TO THE SENIOR MENTORS I would firstly like to thank all the seniors who have taken the time out of their everyday life to come and help us juniors become better Maori and Pasifika women. The mentoring programme was designed to help us become more independent and to better ourselves. On behalf of the Year 7 & 8 mentees, we would like to thank all the teachers and staff who have supported the mentors to enable them to support us. Thank-you, from the bottom of our hearts. Speech written by Sylvia Pailate, Yr 8 FINAL FONO FOR 2014 TO ALL OUR PASIFIKA FAMILIES Marist College extends a warm invitation to you to attend the last fono of the year. Marist College celebrates, appreciates and enjoys the diverse cultures of the Pacific Islands in our school community. When: Thursday 27th November 2014 Where: Marist College Staffroom What to bring: A plate of food to share and bring another parent of the school along. Agenda: Open forum/socialising/networking/making connections CHRISTMAS GIFT GIVING MONTE CECILIA HOUSING TRUST A very special part of Christmas at Marist College is our tradition of gift giving to families in need associated with Monte Cecilia Housing Trust. Each year we ask YOU (students from the junior school) to bring a present for someone who would otherwise receive NOTHING! These gifts are to be left unwrapped as Monte Cecilia House give them to Mums and Dads who can then wrap the presents for their children. Marist Families have been extremely generous this year in helping others in need and it is with some hesitation that I ask for more…..but without your generosity some families will receive no presents this Christmas. Each year we assist in excess of 100 families. Presents do not need to be expensive just something that you would find acceptable to receive! Felt tip pens, books, toys, toiletries, balls, vouchers etc. Presents can be brought to 313 during Tutor Group time. Any vouchers should be given directly to Ms Pinto or to Mrs Brebner. I thank you in advance for your generosity; please know you are making a difference to families here in Auckland.
