From Pastor Dave
I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but
it is Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live
by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. -Galatians 2:20
Easter Sunday, April 5, is of course an annual celebration to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus. Many consider this day as “the most holy” of
religious holidays. Others look at this day as the one and only time they attend worship -- unless, of course, they also make a point to come on Christmas.
Actually, the early Christian church began celebrating Easter as a
“Christian Passover.” The Passover, we remember, was already an important
celebration for the Jews because it commemorated their deliverance from
Egypt. Since Jesus’ death was during the Passover celebration, many Jewish
Christians continued to observe Passover in memory of Christ’s death. Later
on, the yearly “Christian Passover” began to include other observances, such
as Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Then the day Jesus
rose from the dead they called, “Resurrection Sunday.”
Over the history of the Christians church, there have been controversies over when to celebrate Easter and over some of the pagan customs that
were incorporated into the Christian celebration. For instance, the egg was
considered a symbol of life and fertility in a pagan ritual. It was borrowed by
the Christians to become a symbol of “life” for the Christian holiday. The
earliest Easter eggs were dyed red to represent the blood shed by Christ.
These are just a few facts about how the Easter celebration came
about. Of course, the reason you and I celebrate Easter today is because we
want to fully celebrate Jesus Christ’s life, death and resurrection that secured
our salvation. However, in the same way that Christmas ought to be celebrated 365 days/year, my prayer is that people will, more than once a year, think
about the meaning of Easter. Each Sunday throughout the year really is a
“little Easter”.
Let’s continue to live daily for Christ, serving Him through the power
of His resurrection.
Happy Easter!

Sign Up to Join “The Supper Club”
You won’t want to miss out on the opportunity to make new friends
at Calvary while enjoying food and fellowship. Registration for the
Summer session will take place after Easter and continue through
April 26. Watch for a table in the narthex near the office and fill out a
registration form. Singles and couples of all ages are welcome. Contact
the church office or Marcia Cottrill for more information.
Calvary Lutheran First Annual Book ‘n Bake Sale
Groups of 6 again will be randomly chosen, but will determine their
own schedule. There are no rules: just the expectation of three potluck
meals in members’ homes between May and September. During this first
session some groups have had so much fun they have met more than
three times and even invited neighbors to join them. Some groups met for
brunch after church to minimize driving or enjoyed lunch together to avoid
driving after dark.
Talk to anyone who has participated and you will get an enthusiastic
report. “Let Us Break Bread Together” as Jesus did. Sharing Food in
Fellowship with others brings many rewards. It is a time for sharing who
we are, a time for learning about each other and a time of joy in knowing
that we share in common our love for God and His love for us. It is a time
well spent. One comes away with a smile and a feeling of gratitude to be
a part of this small gathering. We, Bob and Jeanne Workley, highly recommend the "Supper Club" to everyone at Calvary.
Dianne and Ed Weitzel said, “Calvary’s Supper Clubs are creating
family. Our group consisted of two couples and two singles. Although we
were assigned our group of six, inviting others is always an option and
those who had the space did so. We all enjoyed our first meal together as
acquaintances and by our third had become good friends. We are anxious to continue this unique fellowship and culinary adventure.”
You know what they say. When one door closes another opens.
So here we are (the Stitchcrafters) closing the door on our Rummage
Sale, which no longer exists. However, the door of opportunity has
opened and the project replacement is a Book ‘n Bake Sale. This is
scheduled for May 2 from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
Once again we will be calling on our church family for your support, so when you are doing your Spring Cleaning, keep in mind that we
would love to have all the books that you don’t plan on keeping with
this exception: We will not accept magazines, dictionaries or encyclopedias.
Bring Books: Starting Tuesday, April 28 thru Friday, May 1 from
9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Those of you who are bakers, please begin to think about what
you would like to bake and donate. We are not, however, selling Lefse.
We will save that for our Christmas Bazaar.
Continue to read your church bulletin, as we will publish updates
so you are kept informed.
This is our first experience with this particular type of fund raiser,
so if you have knowledge of or experience inparticipating in one previously, we are certainly open to suggestions.
Many thank for your support.

Relay For Life Yard Sale
Friday, May 1st, 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
Our Calvary Lutheran Relay For Life “South Pacific”
Team has a lofty goal of raising $2,500 to help “fight cancer here within Josephine County”. Our primary money-raising effort will be a Yard Sale. We seek
support from the congregation through the donation of “yard sale” items. The
Team asks you to bring donated items (no electronics, shoes, food, out-ofseason clothes or large/heavy items please) to the church and place them on
the tables near the back entrance (Thursdays-Sundays). Please mark the boxes/containers “Yard Sale Items”. These items will be removed from the church
not later than Monday at 9:00 a.m. If you have larger or awkward items to
donate, please contact Dick Cottrill to make arrangements for special delivery/
pick-up. We are accepting items through April 19.
The Team welcomes you to come to the Sale on Friday, May 1, 8:00
a.m.-2:00 p.m. and spend some money!! The Yard Sale will be held at Gordon
Hoefer’s home, 3353 Cheyenne Drive, Grants Pass, 97527. Contact Dick Cottrill at 541-472-8879 or [email protected] with comments, suggestions or

There was a very gracious lady who was mailing an old family Bible to her
brother in another part of the country. "Is there anything breakable in here?"
asked the postal clerk. "Only the Ten Commandments." answered the lady.
A minister parked his car in a no-parking zone in a large city because he was
short of time and couldn't find a space with a meter. Then he put a note under
the windshield wiper that read: "I have circled the block 10 times. If I don't park
here, I'll miss my appointment. Forgive us our trespasses." When he returned,
he found a citation from a police officer along with this note "I've circled this
block for 10 years. If I don't give you a ticket I'll lose my job. Lead us not into
temptation."
A Sunday School teacher began her lesson with a question, "Boys and girls,
what do we know about God?" A hand shot up in the air. "He is an artist!" said
the kindergarten boy. “Really? How do you know?" the teacher asked. "You
know - Our Father, who does art in Heaven.."
A minister waited in line to have his car filled with gas just before a long holiday
weekend. The attendant worked quickly, but there were many cars ahead of
him. Finally, the attendant motioned him toward a vacant pump. "Reverend,"
said the young man, "I'm so sorry about the delay. It seems as if everyone
waits until the last minute to get ready for a long trip." The minister chuckled, "I
know what you mean. It's the same in my business."
The minister was preoccupied with thoughts of how he was going to ask the
congregation to come up with more money than they were expecting for repairs
to the church building. Therefore, he was annoyed to find that the regular
organist was sick and a substitute had been brought in at the last minute. The
substitute wanted to know what to play. "Here's a copy of the service," he said
impatiently. "But, you'll have to think of something to play after I make the announcement about the finances." During the service, the minister paused and
said, "Brothers and Sisters, we are in great difficulty; the roof repairs cost twice
as much as we expected and we need $4,000 more. Any of you who can
pledge $100 or more, please stand up." At that moment, the substitute organist
played "The Star Spangled Banner." And that is how the substitute became the
regular organist!
