Around the World
Every culture has its version of hors
d’oeuvres or appetizers—those little
nibbles that precede a meal or that may
constitute the meal itself at a casual
gathering. These are most often bite-sized
finger foods that are convenient to eat
standing up at a bar or at a party with a
drink in your other hand.

To Americans, the word “appetizer” means
either small bite-sized foods to enjoy
before a meal or the first course of the
meal itself.
China: Dim Sum
Any of a vast array of bite-sized dishes
from dumplings to stuffed buns and rice
rolls. These may also make up the entire

always served with tea.
France: Hors d’oeuvre (literally
means “outside the work”)
The French coined the most commonly used

the appetite. Classic French hors d’oeuvres
include foie gras, oysters and canapés and

also be the meal itself depending on the
dishes served. Common smorgasbord
items are open-faced sandwiches, pickled
herrings, smoked salmon and cheeses.
Spain: Tapas
Tapas are served most often alongside
sherry or cocktails in bars or restaurants.
They can be as light as a cube of cheese
skewered with an anchovy or as substantial
as stuffed peppers or small sandwiches.
