From the Presidents Pen... Since our last dinner meeting we have had a Leo get together although not large, it was enjoyed by all. April started with our Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal, and again the community and our visitors dug deep for the cause. Well done to Amber and all her little helpers, Janette, Bill, Peter, Laurie, Wendy & Steph, and any others I have not mentioned for a job well done. Congratulations to our wonderful Hospital for an outstanding result and the breakfast enjoyed by many. Another thank you to all involved. In an other matter, any ideas for another day out would be welcomed. Tonight we have the privilege to welcome two new members, Wendy Lunghusen and Stephanie Ibbs, I’m sure you will join me in welcoming them into our Club, and help them to find there feet in our great organisation. YOUTH EXCHANGE Jordan Nicholson travelled to Europe as an Exchange Student with Lions International in 2014-15. He came along to our March dinner meeting to let us all know about his experiences travelling around Europe. He did actually have a problem with his luggage deciding to head off on a different holiday on its own. A slide show of the magnificent buildings dating back hundreds of years gave us all a glimpse of the towns where he had stayed, shopped and ate. Thanks Jordon. Youth Exchange The Lions International 2013-14 State Winner - Ashleigh Rogers, had the pleasure of presenting Emma Wiggins 2014-15 State Winner with the State Shield. Emma will now represent Victoria at the National Final in Newcastle in May. Youth Exchange Program was established in 1961 to give youth an opportunity to travel to exciting international destinations for up to six weeks. Whilst overseas, the youth live with one or more families associated with Lions International to experience first-hand a new culture, lifestyle and customs. Unlike some exchange programs, the Lions Youth Exchange Program does not involve tourism, academic studies or employment. The aim of the program is “to create and foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the world”. 3 Lions International "Aloha Lavi" means "Welcome to Lavington" All members in Lions, Leo and Lioness Clubs of our District 201V6 are welcome to join us on Friday 16, Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October for the V6 District Convention We have arranged a busy program along with quality presenters and fun social events Lions Clubs International is celebrating 100 years of service and we're getting ready for our next 100 years! The award goes to Wendy and her team around the Caravan Park, she must have them all scared, well done. Our March “Bad Tie” dinner meeting was a great success. There were some doosies, from Sydney Swans to Leopard bow ties, the winner was Marg McLennan with her bow tie. President Budgie impressed all not only with his skills in the sink, for which he is well known, but for his ‘dress’ sense. Peter was assisted by one of the volunteers to count the coins and get them into the bags Keith couldn’t see what all the fuss was about, he liked all the ties!! The raffle on the day was won by Edith Harrison who was a bit excited with the win. Our meal was pies from the new “Red Gum Bakery’ in Leitchville, a great assortment was on hand for all to enjoy. Thanks to Malcolm, Marg and Jeanette for organising the meal. A great turn out, and a good night had by all. During the day, for the first time in memory, the Brigade was called out to a paddock fire, before they left, Bruce made sure Wendy was not in the kitchen. Thanks to Captain Bruce and CFA members for the use of their building once again and the assistance during the day. Much appreciated. Good Friday Appeal Once again Cohuna and those visiting our area, have exceeded expectations, and dug deep for this worthwhile cause. What a great result, $13,260.74, a record high for our area. Thanks to all those who helped out on the day, collecting around the streets, in the shops and out the bush around the camps. The ‘bean’ counters were kept busy, with each group returning keen to know how much they “No pressure Jeanette, but how much did we get” Leos Hanna & Nat, with Gemma, Amber & new Lion Steph, checking the tally 5 Around Cohuna Cohuna District Hospital celebrated after patients gave it the thumbs up. Cohuna District Hospital board of management president, Cameron Hodge said is it an "encouraging" result. CARING for the well-being of residents in rural townships extends beyond the four walls of a hospital. "The hospital has conducted themselves at a high standard and it's a real honour to receive this award," Mr Hodge said. That philosophy at Cohuna District Hospital was evident at the weekend, when more than 150 people gathered at Garden Park to celebrate after the hospital "We show really strong staff stability, and we have very topped the latest Government survey into patient dedicated and committed staff to ensure Cohuna is well satisfaction in Victorian hospitals, with a rate of 99.2 per looked after and well serviced." cent. He said the hospital is fortunate to have a "strong and Lions Club members and hospital staff provided a dynamic" chief executive officer in Bill Hall and outgoing bacon & egg complimentary breakfast, while a jumping director of nursing, Anne Graham, whose replacement castle and face painting kept the young entertained "has big shoes to fill". during the morning. (From the Gannawarra Times 21st April 2015) This result means that patients consider the hospital being one of the best rural health-care facilities in the State, and that the hospital's mission statement, "to provide quality health care and support services...in a safe and friendly environment" is the most accurate. Member for Murray Plains, Peter Walsh said "I think this is a prime example where there is a fantastic team of health professionals who deliver health services," Mr Walsh said. "We have a team here that is really committed to delivering the best possible health-care to Cohuna and the district." CFA Renovations begin...... CFA Captain Bruce attended our Business meeting on Thursday night to keep the members informed on the CFA rebuild. After some delays, the tender process was completed with a good result for Cohuna, McLoughlan Builders have been awarded the tender. Your laugh for today Little Girl On An Airplane! An atheist was seated next to a little girl on an airplane and he turned to her and said, "Do you want to talk? Flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger." The little girl, who had just started to read her book, replied to the total stranger, "What would you All manner of tradesman’s trucks and bobcats want to talk about?" were to be seen around the sight on "Oh, I don't know," said the atheist. "How Wednesday morning about why there is no God, or no Heaven or Hell, or The work has begun! We will all watch with no life after death?" as he smiled smugly. much interest as the building takes shape. "Okay," she said. "Those could be interesting topics but let me ask you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff - grass. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, but a horse produces clumps. Why do you suppose that is?" The atheist, visibly surprised by the little girl's intelligence, thinks about it and says, "Hmmm, I have no idea." To which the little girl replies, "Do you really feel qualified to discuss God, Heaven and Hell, or life after death, when you don't know shit?" And then she went back to reading her book. 6 Lions International Our Leos were very disappointed when the Leo Sunday saw all hands on deck to build ‘cars’ out of Convention was cancelled, Hanna and Emily had cardboard to have a race. been on the committee and put in a lot of work. So it was decided that they would still hold something here in Cohuna. An invitation was extended to all Leos, but only two turned up to share the weekend, Jade and Ashleigh from Wangaratta Leos along with Jades dad, Mat. Though short on numbers, there was no lack of enthusiasm. The scout hall was booked and food and drink arranged, ready for a fun weekend. We had the use of the equipment at the hall, so it wasn’t long before the canoes were in the water, despite the day being cold. It was a lot of fun, look forward to next year......... Leos have been busy assisting at the Gannawarra Youth Council / Freeza “Skate Date” cooking up as storm on the BBQ was new Lion Riggzy The buggies were very popular and also had a fair work out, an obstacle track was set up along the roadway. Sara proved to be very good at ’drifting’ around the corners. Lots of fun had by all. A BBQ tea was enjoyed by Leos, Lions and family and friends around the fire pit, where charades were the order of the night. Emily proved to be just way too good, guessing some, no one had any idea about. Sleeping proved to be a bit of a problem as there was just so too energy left, so a game of ‘caterpillars’ was made up. Leos in their sleeping bags had to get from one end of the hall to the other. Mat had no hope of sleeping. While Michelle helped Emily, Hanna and Mikayla out with serving, Emily later had a go on a skate board with good results, no broken bones! The Leos acted as waitresses at the Golf Club Dinner Dance and did a great job. Thanks to soon to be Lion, Steph for her help on the night. 7 Member Partner Surname Address Phone Laurie Joyce Hull ARCHARD 7 Cullen Street Cohuna 5456 2586 Bill Elaine BRUNS 4 Island Rise Cohuna 5456 4196 Christine COLESTON 41 King Edward Street Cohuna 0412 692 505 Peter COLESTON 41 King Edward Street Cohuna 0413 637 966 CUMMINS 103 King Edward Street Cohuna 5456 3165 GRAHAM 30 Fairway Crescent Cohuna 5456 2028 Elly Keith Anne HALL 33 Railway Ave Cohuna 0422 911 585 Stephanie Kerry IBBS 26 Reids Road Cohuna 0417 828 283 Jeanette KLINE 21 Market Street Cohuna 5456 4138 Wendy LUNGHUSEN 71 King Edward Street Cohuna 0400 248 285 Bill Julian Margaret LEE 24 McMillan's Road Cohuna 5456 2658 Malcolm Margaret MCLENNAN 13 King Edward Street Cohuna 5456 4348 Allan MITCHELL 5 Cullen Street Cohuna 5456 2097 Anne MITCHELL 5 Cullen Street Cohuna 5456 2858 0417 605 241 Ian Sue RIDGWAY 40 William Street Cohuna Andrew Michelle RIGG Kirby Street Cohuna Michelle Andrew RIGG Kirby Street Cohuna 0417 142 254 Robert Ann SHANAHAN 15 Cullen Street Cohuna 5456 2373 Amber Nathan Orr WALKINGTON 127 King George Street Cohuna 0488 958 506 Allan WALKINGTON 23 George Street Cohuna 5456 2673 Lee WALKINGTON 62 Channel Street Cohuna 0400 576 383 Norm WALKINGTON 62 Channel Street Cohuna 0427 563 293 Wendy WALKINGTON 23 George Street Cohuna 5456 2673 WOOD 17 Cullen Street Cohuna 5456 2544 Charlie Beth Honorary Members Ann GRAHAM Florence LANNEN Cohuna 16 Margaret Street Social Calendar MAY 14th Business Meeting 21st Beyondblue Forum - Cohuna 25th Incoming Officer Training Moama 28th Dinner Meeting 11th Business Meeting 19th Leo Change Over Dinner 25th Change Over Dinner Beyondblue ~ Lions Joining Hands Community Event Thursday 21st May 2015 Cohuna Bowling Club 7pm Guest Speaker Justice Shane Marshall Federal Courts JUNE JULY 9th Cohuna DG Visit with Leos - venue to be arranged 8
