What a great month we have just had. Starting with a country Cabinet Meeting held in fantastic surroundings of Dalwallinu's Old Convent. With nearly thirty Team Members and partners making their way to this wheat belt town. Saturday night after some fellowship around the pool was followed with a beautiful roast dinner. With the individual tables trying to out do one another in various feats of skill, the evening ended with lots of fellowship and laughter. The Dalwallinu Lions Club cooked up a huge country style breakfast, then it was back to the meeting. It was a great meeting with good discussion and some thoughts from a first time conventioneer who had attended Jurien Bay. A special presentation of a computer to the newly formed Dalwallinu Youth Group. This presentation was made by Halina Young from the City of Perth Lions Club as part of their Computer Refurbishing Program. It was great to have Bill Carter, a Charter Member of Dalwallinu Lions, join us for lunch. A very special thank-you to the members of Dalwallinu Club for organising such a great weekend along with thanks to Leanne and Kirsty our hosts at The Old Convent. Carol and I visited Club judging of Youth of the Year at North Beach, Floreat and City of Perth Lions, after having witnessed contestants at Whitford last month. The youth of today just continue to amaze me with so many talents. This all came together on Saturday afternoon at the District Finals with eight contestants taking place. When judging was completed and with only half a point separating some of the participants the three to go forward to State Finals were announced. All eight were very worthy participants and I certainly would acknowledge the judges who obviously had an extremely difficult decision. District Chairman, Carmel Ward, you’re a champion for the organisation, coaching and finally a great afternoon that I’m sure will only strengthen YOTY for years to come. Children of Courage has come and gone for another year. With around seventy participants all assembling at Pan Pacific Hotel yesterday and with more at Albany and Kalgoorlie yet to be acknowledged. With our aim to put a “Smile on Faces” was certainly achieved. This was followed by a great array of food ably prepared by Pan Pac, everyone went home with smiles and a full tummy. With the Special Children, families and Lions we had a five hundred and fifty strong crowd. This is still a very important event on our annual calendar. District Chairman, Pamela Baird along with assistance from Christina Smelt and David WHAT’S INSIDE Baird; you guys organised a phenomenal day for Special Children. I Swan’s 50th P2 | Ocean Reef help Sea Scouts P3 | would also like to acknowledge the effort of W2 Chairman, Vivienne Kalgoorlie Lions Train P4 | Youth of the year District Final P5 | Youth of The Year advert for State Final P6 | Doyle as this is a joint W Districts Project. Members also bottled wine, taught a paraplegic woman to drive, donated money to the Midland Tech school, and sherries and fashion parade in the Boan’s Chandelier Room, A beautiful pin has been struck to commemorate the occasion. Swan District Lions Sponsored the Lions Club of Northam which is still going, but is unfortunately no longer a part of our district; the club also started a Leos club the details of which are lost in time…. rom it’s Charter night on Saturday 22 May 1965 until the present day Swan District Lions have been serving and having a great time doing it. The club was sponsored by the Lions Club of Victoria Park and it was really wonderful to see members from that club attending the 50th on 22 March 2015. The original Charter Programme still exists with the autographs of 90 guests. The club’s first project was levelling the ‘rough ground’ fronting the primary school so that it could be developed into a playground.. A lot of wonderful projects have followed by donating funds for bushfires and participating in a car rally directed in Braille. One amazing activity was selling tickets to allow participants to wreck a car with sledgehammers. The joint Wildflower Walkathon run by Lions, Apex and Rotary was a The club has a colourful history and is looking to the future. They have a new meeting venue in the Vines and a new younger membership with exciting ideas and a very positive attitude. 2 Replace Sea Scout’s equipment Ocean Reef Lions members received a request from 1St Mullaloo Sea Scouts in late October 2014 for a donation to help replace equipment they had lost in an arson fire. The scout troop catered for approx. 60 children between 8-17 and they lost 90% of their camping and sailing equipment when a rubbish bin was set alight next to their equipment shed at a local primary school. While the scouts are still waiting for their insurance claim to be paid they were well aware it would be woefully short of replacing equipment which in many cases had been donated with no monetary value attributable. Given they have a full calendar of events planned we simply asked what would be most helpful and the club agreed to help raise funds to replace personal floatation devices (PFDs), to re-equip them to safely undertake water based activities. ALF very kindly donated $1000 and we decided to hold Lions Christmas Cakes stalls at our local shopping centres to match the $1000 grant monies. Much fun was had by all when we had scouts and their parents come along to help at the stalls. Scouts attended a recent meeting and talked about the activities they undertake, caving, abseiling, sailing to name a few. This small project has been very worthwhile for all involved, with fantastic discounts provided on equipment purchases we were able to donate 32 PFDs, 2 marine radios, 5 eskies, 7 lanterns, 2 tents, 4 shades and a cooking set. So not only will the scouts be able to continue their water based activities but they have the ability to proceed with planned camping trips this month. Laurel Miro, President Lions Club of Ocean Reef The Australian Lions Foundation was formed by Lions with the sole purpose of assisting people in time of need . As a group committed to serving the community, Lions and the Foundation continue to fulfil this need in Australia and Papua New guinea. Providing financial assistance and support in cases of national disaster, emergency and community welfare projects and encouraging international understanding and cooperation by relief projects in developing countries. The Foundation also delivers an Awards programme for the following awards—Ian M Stockdale—James D Richardson— William Tresise—Community Service. More details : http://www.lionsclubs.org.au/alf/index.html Applications for grants and awards should be discussed with our District ALF Chairman PDG Clive Tonkin. 3 The Kalgoorlie Lions Train raised $2200.00 over the 2 days of the Kalgoorlie Boulder annual Fair which is a great result for the members. Especially as it was 40 degrees on the Saturday For some of the children's parents it was a real trip down memory lane; they had ridden on the train when they were young. Being able to revisit the fun of long ago through their children brought back many wonderful memories. This little Lions train is synonymous with fun in Kalgoorlie. It has a long and prestigious history of helping the community to celebrate the good times and to raise funds for community projects. The front part which is a Mini Moke engine with the body modified to look like a Mack Truck very recently had to be sent to Perth for urgent repairs and upgrade of the front Suspension. Would you believe a Transport Company based in Kalgoorlie transported the Mini Moke to Perth and back free of charge as they respect the Train as a Icon which the Children love. The members of the Kalgoorlie Club also staffed the small building the Lions Club owns and supplied food for the people attending the Fair. Unfortunately, with the very hot day it was not the return we expected but did raise a $1000.00. It picked up a bit on the following day as it was only 25 degrees. All in all it was great weekend being full on for all members Eddie Rochester, Lions Club of Kalgoorlie To help us change the lives of many more Australian’s suffering from visual impairment and blindness, I would like to ask that your club consider ALVIF when making your semi-annual disbursements and should you do so, you can be assured that your contribution can and will make a difference to your not so fortunate fellow Australians. PDG Arthur Uren | Foundation Executive Officer | Remittance Details shown below 4 The District Final of the Youth of the Year program was held on Saturday, 28th March 2015. The facilities at the Bendat Parent & Community Centre in Dodd St, Wembley were very suitable for the Public Speaking Function, which included the use of the Auditorium, Board Room, kitchen and the area for the lunch and afternoon tea. The function was well supported, with 80 Lions, family members, friends and school representatives attending to support the eight contestants. Mrs Denise Rimmer from the NAB Warwick Branch attended to represent the major sponsor of the program. Denise had also participated as a judge for the Duncraig Club final. The event was made possible by Pan Pacific Perth who made a ballroom available, provided the sound systems, and put on a magnificent luncheon for the recipients and their families. Invocare made a substantial financial contribution and Bunnings provided their iconic Bunnings Bears for each child. Louise Momber & Matt Tinney were again kind enough to compere the event which was done extremely well. This event is an outstanding success and showcases the ability of the Lions members of Districts 201W1 and 201W2. The Chairpersons who worked together to achieve this great result were W1 PDG Pamela Baird and W2 Vivienne Doyle. I had DGW2 Maxine Whitley who opened proceedings and I was able to close the ceremony. were in attendance and the programme ran very smoothly. The families appreciated the awards as well as the opportunity to share a delicious luncheon and catch up. The Lions members were so very appreciative of the opportunity to once again serve these very unique young people. Well done every one of you. All clubs will receive a letter asking members to do the same by whatever means necessary. (I can see your imaginations running riot, settle down! —ed.) Basically, clubs are asked to raise $5 million over 3 years Australia Wide We have come up with a simple approach to achieving this target. Our approach is to ask each club to contribute a specific amount. There are approximately 25,000 Lions Club members within 1,300 Lions Clubs in Australia. By dividing these 25,000 members into $5,000,000, it equates to $200 per member over a 3 year period. This amount can be raised and donated in year 1 or spread over the three years. We believe that this is an achievable amount of money per Lion’s member, contributing to such a worthwhile cause. The object of the award is to nurture and promote the principles of good citizenship by due recognition of Service to Others. To those who through practice and example to others, promote the principles of Good Citizenship. To those who in promoting these principles foster and encourage mutual understanding among the various segments in our community. Importantly, to those who through personal sacrifice on their part and through care and devotion give service to the Needs of Others. There is no cost to individual clubs and a beautiful wooden shield is presented to the recipient. If your club is interested in nominating a member of your community please contact Jill Middlemass 9342 0999 15 For 8 years now, the Lions Ladies of Australian Lionsonoz, the Lions Club that caters for the growing number of Lions who have become “Grey Nomads” have been busily knitting various garments for underprivileged babies and children both here and overseas. While the Lions travel this great country of ours in caravans and mobile homes, its usually the husband who drives and the lady sits in the passenger’s seat and fills in her time knitting. It is remarkable just how many garments can get churned out. Apart from the items our ladies produce, we are also supported by quite a number of ladies, in the Lions family and many with no connections with Lions at all, who are busily knitting babies clothes and “trauma” dolls and Teddies to be used in hospitals or ambulances where children are in sometimes frightening situations following an accident or a sudden calamity of some type. Recently a huge box of children’s clothes were given to the Australian Bush Church Aid and these have been distributed to missions all over Australia where they are needed. The Australian Lionsonoz Lions Club is now in its 8th year. We have a membership at present of 37 with another 4 awaiting transfer from their current Lions Club. President Lion Neil Bilney of Dunsborough Western Australia said that the numbers of our members are constantly changing. When a Lion decides to retire, buy a mobile home or caravan and take off to see the wonders of Australia, many of these Lions were lost to Lionism before Lionsonoz. Now they simply apply for a transfer from their current Lions Club and take up membership with Lionsonoz. When they finish with their travels they have the choice of staying as a member of Lionsonoz or re-join a “Main stream” Lions Club where they intend to settle. He said that the advantage of Lionsonoz is that we meet monthly, the 3rd Monday of the month on the internet through Skype so members can attend meetings no matter where they are in Australia. Members are encouraged to seek out the Lions Club in the various towns they visit and offer their services to assist in that Club’s projects. It works very well. Any Lions wanting more information about Australian Lionsonoz may contact the secretary Lion Gwyneth Payne on 0439258644 or [email protected] Photos: District Governor of N1 Peter Willis-Jones and L.L. You need to know more than the basics though. To most chairpersons it is a hobby. We spend our free time serving our members to the best of our ability. Our organisation was developed to offer service to our communities, Lions do not receive any benefit from their membership except for that good feeling you can’t buy. We attend meetings and pay for our own meals. Some Cabinet members are reimbursed for some of their expenses. Most of us just give of our time and our means. This means we drive long distances and do not claim the mileage, we buy small items and contribute them to the project or whatever. At our recent meeting in Dalwallinu we made some decisions which effect you and one of the more interesting ones is to bring back the paper copy of the newsletter. We are offering each club 5 printed copies. If this does not suit your club please contact Allan Lowe 9652 2212 who is currently doing the printing. If you know a cabinet member who is serving you give them a thumbs up, they’re doing for Lions. 17 LANCELIN Continues with it’s extraordinary recycle programme BROOME March AROUND THE CLUBS NORTH BEACH Sponsored a contestant in the District YOTY final BALLAJURA Participated with other local clubs in Harmony Day celebrations HANNANS GOLDFIELDS Donated 80 toiletry bags to the Kalgoorlie Mental Health unit Did some maintenance on the Lions Park gazebos and BBQs NEWMAN Did some planning for a Lions Open Day KALGOORLIE Donated $2000 to a local Women’s Refuge for new flooring YANCHEP TWO ROCKS Had a visit by their returning Youth Exchange student they sponsored.
