SPRING SPIN: MAY IS BIKE MONTH
SHASTA COUNTY – Spring is a great time to gear up and head outdoors for a bike ride. And May brings a wide
range of bicycle related events – from a bike-in outdoor movie and social events to popular races and long
distance rides.
New this year is the Spring Spin Celebration taking place Friday, May 8th (4-7 pm) in the Quarry Plaza just
north of the Sundial Bridge. Featuring music, food trucks, bicycle checks by mechanics, bicycle related
resources, an opportunity to give input to transportation officials, and more – this event has everything you need
to celebrate National Bike Month. Presented by Owens Healthcare, Turtle Bay Exploration Park, and others.
A great way to kick off Bike Month is by attending Streets Alive! Shasta Living Streets will turn California Street
in downtown Redding into a car-free zone full of fun for all ages on Sunday, May 3rd (9 am – 4 pm).
There are also opportunities to Ride (May 9) or Dine (May 12) with local transportation officials. You can
learn about recent and upcoming projects to improve bikability as well as share your input. Hosted by Caltran
District 2.
A Redding tradition is enjoying the Asphalt Cowboy’s Pancake Breakfast outdoors. Thanks to the Shasta
Wheelmen, the first 150 people who arrive by bicycle wearing a helmet will receive valet bicycle parking and free
breakfast tickets on the morning of May 15th.
Remember the Drive-In? This year’s Bike-In Outdoor Movie will feature Breaking Away, a bicycling classic, on
Friday, May 22nd at 8 pm. Results of the Shasta Bike Challenge will also be announced. Presented by Enjoy
Magazine and Ride on Race Series.
The Shasta Bike Challenge runs May 1-17. Participants are entered into a free drawing each day they ride a bike,
worksite and school based teams compete, and this year the local Challenge has been combined with the National
Bike Challenge to offer even more.
More details about these and many more bicycle events (yoga, happy hour and more!) taking place in May can be
found at www.shastabikechallenge.org.
