SHAKESPEARE TRIP
SUCCESS
Our very first field trip was a
success! Students, parents, and
teachers attended the 75th Anniversary of the Shakespeare
Festival. We watched the play,
Twelfth Night, and enjoyed the
experience of staying at an authentic hostel, bunk beds and all.
For those of you who were able
to join us, thank you so much
for supporting our efforts in
offering students unique and
memorable experiences.

It has been an amazing
September and a great start
to our year. I am especially
excited about all of the new
families that have joined us
this fall. Welcome aboard.
Thanks to all of you who
talked to your friends and
recommended NDA to
them. Word of mouth is a
powerful tool.
I enjoyed meeting many of
you face to face in Redding
at the waterslides. Thank
you for joining us. It’s fun
to put a faces with names.
As always, our focus is on
taking care of your student’s
needs. My door, e-mail, and
phone are open and I welcome an opportunity to
discuss how we can work
with you to successfully
educate your children.

daughter, Andrea. We had a
wonderful week in September attending a photo clinic.
What a beautiful and majestic place! I can’t wait to go
again.

How to Put Books on Hold
Trouble holding books online? Here’s how:
1.
CREATE ACCOUNT– First you need to
create an account for your child. You will
need their assigned barcode, which you can
request from your teacher.
2.
PASSWORD—Your barcode will become
your password. There is an option to change
this afterwards if you desire.
3.
VISUAL SEARCH—There are several ways
to search the library. For kids, the visual
search is the most accessible. It allows them
to search by interest.
4.
CHOOSE—Once you find the book you
want, click on it’s title, which will become
hyperlinked in blue.
5.
HOLD IT—After clicking on the title, it will
take you to a new page. If you look at the
top right hand corner of the page, you will
find an image of a lock with the words,
―Hold It.‖ Click on this image. Your book
is now on hold for you!
6.
DO NOT—do not click the ―add to list‖
button. This will not hold the book for you.
7.
You can also search for and hold books using Destiny Quest, linked below the library
search tab on the main page.

As mentioned in our last newsletter, we have planned a field
trip to the Lake Shasta Caverns. Now we have a set date,
so mark your calendars for:
Wednesday, October 20th
will be $18 per
person.
This is a regular school tour,
highly recommended for
grades 2nd thru 6th, but all
grades are welcome.

Remember you must call 2333861 to sign up first, as there
are limited spots available.
Students’ tickets are paid for by
the school. Chaperone tickets
Please pack a bag lunch and
join us for a picnic after the
tour. Catamaran ride leaves at
10:00, so if you aren’t there to
check in by 9:30, you will get
left behind, and we don’t want
that!

Fall is always a fun time of
year, and we would like to celebrate the change of seasons
with a trip to the Nash Ranch
Pumpkin Patch in Redding,
CA.

The Alturas Art and Writing
Classes will begin the last week
of September. Classes will be
This years art class is going to
go beyond drawing and painting projects to include:

Last year the writing class focused on creative writing genres. This year, we will be focusing on responding to literature, topic sentences, graphic
organizers, the paragraph, and
the 5 paragraph essay.
The goal for the writing class
this year is to give students the
appropriate tools needed to
build proficient essays, as well
as giving an overall clarity and
professionalism to their writing.
We have 2 new teachers! Welcome Judy St. John in Susanville
and Bridgit Shoffner in Redding.

Tips from Teachers: How to Have a Great Meeting


Please be prepared to show your
teacher what each student has been
doing. This should include text/
curriculum name, page numbers,
topics, etc...
If the student is taking a music class
or a class that requires a log, those
should be filled in. This includes
high school students getting credit
for work study.

Remember to have your daily attendance
and PE logs completed.

It is helpful if the student brings in their
books so the teacher can make the appropriate lesson plans or review items from the
previous learning log.

If you have purchased your own curriculum,
please bring the materials to the meeting so
the teacher can see what standards are being
met.
Barbara Joins the Board
New Day Academy would like
to welcome Barbara Writer to
our Board. She will be representing Shasta county.
Academy’s vendor system.
Barb is the mother of three
New Day Academy students.
Her family also offers classes
in Kung Fu, tumbling and
more, through New Day
Barb also enjoys meeting with
families new to the charter
school environment, giving
support and advice when
needed.
Her daughter Abigail is a 2time National Champion in
gymnastics.
