Expertise
Barrister practising exclusively in criminal defence throughout career.
Conducted complex and lengthy matters of dishonesty, including under the VHCC regime, including as
Leading Junior.
Considerable Appellate experience; numerous reported cases reflect breadth of practice and
willingness to challenge the status quo.
Practice in recent years has comprised economic crime, organised crime, serious sexual crime and
violence (including murder).
Particular expertise in cross-examining children and mentally vulnerable witnesses in the context of
serious sexual allegations and historic allegations including ‘recovered memory cases’.

ECONOMIC CRIME
R v F Bristol CC [2014-2015]
On-going contested POCA proceedings after first ‘Pyramid Scheme’ conviction under the Consumer
Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008. VHCC.
R v G Gloucester CC [2015]
Benefit Fraud trial; acquitted.
R v. M and Others Central CC [2012-13]
Conspiracy to steal gold bullion valued at 1 million pounds sterling; money laundering.
R v P Inner London CC [2012]
Carer alleged to have stolen thousands of pounds from an elderly care home resident with dementia.
Acquitted.
R v H and Others Snaresbrook CC [2009 - 2010]
Leading Junior in largest counterfeiting conspiracy uncovered in the UK, involving several million
pounds worth of high quality counterfeit €50 notes.

Historic sexual abuse of two half-sisters in the 1970s
R v B Manchester CC [2015]
Multi-count rape of a child trial – historic allegations against step-father. Acquitted.
R v P Gloucester CC [2015]
Sexual assault of a child under 13 trial. Defendant assaulted seven year-old daughter of friends in the
family home.
R v JW Gloucester CC [2014]
14 year-old boy alleged to have repeatedly sexually assaulted by penetration his 7 year-old neighbour
over a number of months. Admitted to and was convicted of a single instance; sentenced to Youth
Rehabilitation Order.
R v J Warwick CC [2014]
Three-week multi-complainant and multi-count sexual assault trial; College lecturer alleged to have
sexually assaulted five of his students over a number of years.
R v W Winchester CC [2013]
Alleged rape and indecent assault of a child by her stepfather over many years – historic allegations.
Acquitted on several counts of rape and indecency with a child; convicted of two counts of indecent
assault.
R v M Central CC [2013]
Historic gang rape allegation. Acquitted of joint enterprise rape; convicted of indecent assault.
R v F Croydon CC [2013]
Rape and assault of disabled and mentally vulnerable wife by husband.
R v H St Albans CC [2013]
Assault by penetration/sexual touching of a child – historic allegations, mentally disabled parties
requiring intermediaries, competence issues. Acquitted after legal argument involving expert evidence.
R v M Isleworth CC [2012]
Rape of a child – historic, ‘recovered memory’. Stepfather alleged to have raped and indecently
assaulted his step-daughter over a number of years. Acquitted.
R v M Reading CC [2012]
Indecent assault on a child – historic allegations made by D’s sister. Acquitted.
R v O Basildon CC [2011]
Child neglect/abuse – domestic violence by student social worker toward wife and children.
R v A Inner London CC [2011]
Extraordinary alleged ‘bondage’ street rape. Acquitted.

R v T Snaresbrook CC [2010]
Sexual assault of a nine year-old child by penetration. Trial stopped as an abuse of process after legal
argument; defendant discharged.
R v M Basildon CC [2010]
Serial rape of different women. Multitude of issues including severance, mental health, witness
contamination, disclosure. Convicted of a single rape.
R v D S Southwark CC [2010]
Sexual assault of two children. Significant mental health issues; eventual hospital order.
R v S Inner London CC [2010]
Chartered accountant charged with indecent assault who stood to lose career if convicted. Acquitted.
SERIOUS VIOLENCE
R v B Bristol CC [2015]
Junior counsel in murder trial of man who beat his neighbour to death with a hockey stick. Matter
went to trial after Crown refused plea to unlawful act manslaughter. Acquitted of murder and
convicted of unlawful act manslaughter.
R v O Gloucester CC [2015]
59 year-old man accused of attempted murder after luring his estranged wife to a disused lock-up and
attempting to strangle her. Acquitted of attempted murder; convicted of attempting to inflict grievous
bodily harm in the alternative.
R v D Portsmouth CC [2015]
Section 18 trial after defendant hit a man over the back of the head with a glass bottle during an
argument, causing a wound requiring stitching and scarring. Acquitted of section 18, convicted of s.20
in the alternative.
R v F Central CC [2013]
S.18 GBH – bit man’s thumb off in a brawl. Acquitted.
R v R Snaresbrook CC [2012]
Attempted Murder – joint enterprise multiple stabbing. Convicted of s.18 GBH.
R v K Inner London CC [2012]
S.18 GBH - Wife stabbing husband in a domestic violence context. Acquitted.
R v M Reading CC [2011]
Encouraging the infliction of GBH s.45 Serious Offences Act.
R v A Chelmsford CC [2011]
S.18 GBH – glassing in face causing disfiguring life-long scarring; case with racial undertones.
Acquitted.

Attempted murder by strangulation. Acquitted.

Guideline case on the imposition and operation of Serious Crime Prevention Orders under the Serious
Crimes Act 2007.
R v Malone [2006] All E R (D) 321
Having been led by Queen’s Counsel at trial, acted alone in Court of Appeal. Issue was the admissibility
of the defendant’s bad character (other than previous convictions) pursuant to s.98 CJA 2003; judicial
discretion in admitting evidence of previous forgery in the trial of the defendant for the murder of his
wife.

Admissibility of previous complaints in sexual assault. Conviction quashed.

Fraudulent money transfer, obtaining by deception; successful appeal against sentence.

Judicial direction as to dishonesty; unreasonable belief may be an honest one.
