Opera singer Monika Voysey and Chef Marc Wassung will join forces on Saturday, April 18, to present an elegant Spanish themed soirée that will feature glorious arias and food, at the Welgemeend Manor House in Gardens. Voysey, joined by baritone Riaan Hunter and pianist Adrian More, will perform popular excerpts from the operas ‘Carmen’ and ‘Don Giovanni’, as well as other light classical pieces. After tying the knot in 2011, the creative couple decided to combine opera and food and take a different approach by hosting evenings called Sing For Your Supper that celebrate music, song and cuisine. Voysey is a classically trained mezzo-soprano. She was awarded a scholarship to study at The Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where her operatic training began. When she returned in 2008, she began developing a career as a classical singer. She competed and was twice a finalist in the SAMRO competition, and was awarded a bursary by The National Arts Council. A Post Graduate Diploma in Opera at UCT followed, and she was then offered a prestigious position singing as a soloist in the Cape Town Opera Studio. Voysey has a wide classical repertoire, having performed as the alto soloist in over fifteen Oratorios, including a modern South African oratorio, ‘Credo’, in which she appeared as a soloist alongside Sibongile Khumalo. Voysey also performed a lead role in NdodanaBreen’s world premiere of ‘Winnie: The Opera’. F Discover inspiration for that special day An added attraction to the event will be the launch of Franschhoek’s online wedding registry. This allows the bride and groom to select wedding gifts from Franschhoek specialist shops and wineries. PETER TROMP called up director ANGELO GOBBATO, who is helming the production that features three different casts of young, exciting performers. Tell us about ‘La Traviata’ and what audiences can look forward to with your production. It’s an absolute masterpiece composed by Giuseppe Verdi that contains one glorious melody after another, based on a very romantic story that has proved popular for many, many years. Unsurprisingly, it is many people’s favourite opera and it’s a wonderful way to begin your knowledge of the opera. Our production puts a very exciting young cast – in fact three exciting young casts – to the fore, with students from the University of Cape Town Opera School and the studio of Cape Town Opera. They are all absolutely superb singers, with their wings spread out, ready to take off for international careers and I think the public can really look forward to some superb music, some lovely acting and very glorious singing. Angelo Gobbato As a director, what excites you about bringing this opera to life? Well, it is really one of the greatest Verdi music dramas rather than an opera, as such. Although it is absolutely chock and block with glorious melodies, everything about the opera is written with a dramatic motivation and so as a director one has the challenge of persuading the young singers to give very intense, real performances, as opposed to letting them just stand around and sing, so it’s a challenge, but it’s very exciting because one can open so many new things for these young singers. When was the first time you experienced the opera, and what was your initial reaction to it? In a sense I was born with opera in my blood, because I come from Italy. I was born in Milano, the big city with the famous opera house Teatro alla Scala and my family was very musical and involved in music, and I sort of was immersed in opera from the time that I was born, but I suppose the first full performance of ‘La Traviata’ that I experienced was in Cape Town. I arrived here when I was about six years old in the 1950s and in those days there were travelling European companies that used to give performances at the Alhambra Theatre, and that was when I first saw the opera. Shortly after that I saw an even more exciting production staged by the famous Eoan Group, with Vera Gow as a glorious Violetta, and that really made me fall in love with the piece. The basic story of ‘La Traviata’ has proven very popular over the ages, having been replicated in popular culture in such movies as ‘Pretty Woman’ and ‘Moulin Rouge’. What do you think it is about the story that has resulted in such longevity and universal appeal? The original story was written by a great French writer, Alexandre Dumas, who was the son of the great(emphasis) Alexandre Dumas, who wrote ‘The Three Musketeers, so the Dumas family was evidently very good at writing stories that have become lasting popular favourites. The novel ‘The Lady of the Camellias’, which served as the basis for ‘La Traviata’, has got this incredible ability to touch everybody’s hearts, and it is especially touching for female audiences, who really identify with the story of a woman who is forced to give up her one, true love, because of her having been involved with prostitution and this eventually breaks her heart and she dies. The fight between the social embargo on sexual liberty and the true love of this one woman has remained eternally a favourite subject. * Book at Computicket. In fact, she is a phenomenon, a real superstar – to pitch Whitney Houston’s song after song so perfectly all night while carrying what is quite a demanding show for one woman, is nothing short of stupefying. But, methinks the production company “doth protest too much” regarding the actual show. So, clearly, Houston, we have a problem. In gastronomic terms it would translate into this: you go to a restaurant and you order a steak and it is the best steak you have ever had. But the baked potato is half cooked, the veggies are soggy and even the sauce is bland, letting that steak down very badly. What do you do? Wax lyrical about the steak and not talk about how bad the rest of the plate was? Or, does one complain about it? My point is simply this: if you market the production as a show, then a show is what you must give me. I am paying you (a lot of) money to see something magical. ‘The Greatest Love of All’ is not a magical production for a few rea- Belinda Davids in ‘The Greatest Love of All’ sons. For starters, after you have established that Davids is every bit as good as she is, you start looking for the “other” things associated with the show. Case in point, the dancers. Except for the one boy, Nathan I think his name is, the rest are not just poor but there is such a visible scantiness (and I am not even referring to their costumes) that it began to irritate me every time they made an appearance, distracting me from watching Davids like someone standing in front of the television set while you are watching it. This is my second time seeing a Showtime Australia production at Artscape; the first being a tribute to Freddie Mercury and Queen. There too, the production looked cheap, paltry and untidy, also failing a troupe of good performers. It is as if the producers are trying to cut costs wherever they can. A show like this needs all the bells ‘n whistles. And were it not for Davids’ charm, ability, stage presence and durability, the show would fall flat. While we are comparing apples with apples, I also had the privilege of seeing ‘The Bodyguard’ on stage in London’s West End. Again, production, along with performance, was clearly the success of the show. And I know one could argue that it is a Whitney Houston tribute show so therefore all one needs is a singer who embodies the star. And to an extent you would be correct. But then I may as well listen to the cd in the comfort of my home. This is a show, in one of our most prestigious theatres, and like we want statues removed that remind us too blatantly of a past fraught with injustices, we also do not want watered-down, diet coke versions of concerts and shows. Again, kudos to Davids who is simply brilliant. * Book at Computicket ‘The Mumford Revolution’ comes to Willowbridge Barnyard The Willowbridge Barnyard in Durbanville is offering up something a bit different in the middle of April, as the ultimate feel good banjo, fiddle and double bass led, blue-grass influenced rock show, ‘The Mumford Revolution’, will be staged at the theatre from Friday to Sunday, April 17 to 19. The spotlight falls on the folk, celtic and country inspired music of Mumford and Sons as the show celebrates the origins and emulators of this uplifting, stomping, banjo infused musical trend which has stormed the charts over the past few years. Artists such as James Blunt, The Lumineers, Passenger, One Direction, One Republic, Imagine Dragons, Phillip Phillips, Avicii and our local Jeremy Loops and Matthew Mole have all been inspired by the Mumford sound. They rub shoulders with infectious standards such as ‘Dueling Banjos’, ‘The Devil Went Down to Georgia’, The Soggy Bottom Boys’s ‘Man of Constant Sorrow’, ‘Whiskey in the Jar’ and the ‘Raggle Taggle Gypsy’, all of which are bound to get the party going. Presented by Eastern Cape-based production company Centrestage, the seven piece line-up consists of seasoned entertainers and top musicians who have performed throughout South Africa over the past 10 years. The Mumford Revolution promises to take you on musical journey through the evolution from the American Country Bluegrass & Irish Celtic influences to the Mumford & Sons hipster phenomenon known today. Songs such as James Blunt’s ‘Bonfire Heart’, One Direction’s ‘Story of my Life’, Daughtry’s ‘Long live rock and roll’, One Republic’s ‘Counting Stars’, American Author’s ‘Best Day of My Life’ and Avicii’s ‘Hey Brother’, ‘Wake Me Up’ and ‘These Days’, as well as local lads Matthew Mole’s ‘Take Yours I’ll Take Mine’ and Jer- emy Loops’s ‘Skinny Jeans’ all make it into the show by virtue of their driving kick-drum sound and celtic overtones. The Revolution also takes in the likes of the Charlie Daniels band as well as the Dubliners and a selection of Irish sing-along songs. A selection of popular Mumford and Sons songs such as ‘Babel’, ‘I Will Wait’, ‘Little Lion Man’ and ‘The Cave’, amongst others are also featured. * Tickets are R140 per person and can be booked by calling Willowbridge Barnyard on 021 914 8375; or book online at www.barnyardtheatres.co.za and click on the Cape Town link. Winners crowned at Naledi Theatre Awards Athol Fugard The band that will conjure up the rootsy sound once lived in Hermanus. This touching and prophetic play brings to life the last days of the eccentric Gordon, who came to South Africa with a touring French circus and settled in the Hemel and Aarde valley outside Hermanus. After clashing with the local community because of her sexual orientation as a lesbian she bought the farm Karwyderskraal, where she built a church and school for her farm workers, living a frugal life, dedicating her energy to uplifting the local community, and her beloved horses, for whom she built the famed “horse-graveyard”, which can still be seen. ‘Happy’ features young actor Jarrid Geduld bringing a recent historical figure to the stage in a one man performance. When Happy Sindane announced he was a white boy abducted by a black family into slavery in the township, a media circus followed, grabbing the world’s attention. Now Sindane’s story comes to the stage in a heart rending, bizarre and funny tale of a displaced young man’s search for love and identity in the new South Africa. Aubrey Sekhabi’s ‘Marikana – The Musical’ swept the boards at the South African Naledi Theatre Awards earlier this week. For the first time since the inception of the prestigious awards, two performers – Jonathan Roxmouth and Brendan van Rhyn – shared the honours in the Best Performance Musical: Male category for their inspired roles in ‘Call Me Lee’ and ‘The Rocky Horror Show’ respectively. Now in its 11th year, the Naledi Theatre Awards seek to reflect the vibrant and diverse nature of the South African theatrical landscape. The big winner on the night was ‘Marikana – The Musical’, an emotive and heartfelt tribute to those who lost their lives during the mining strike at Lonmin. It took six awards in the categories Best Production of a Musical (the South African State Theatre), Best Director (Aubrey Sekhabi), Best Performance in a Musical: Female (Emma Mme- kwa), Best Set Design (Wilhelm Disbergen), Best Score (McKenzie Matone, Zakele Mabena and Aubrey Sekhabi) and Best Original Choreography (Thabo Rapoo). At the glittering ceremony at the Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City, attended by the who’s who of the entertainment world, Paul Slabolepszy’s ‘Pale Natives’ scooped three awards; Best Production of a Play (director Bobby Heaney), Best Supporting Actor (Antony Coleman) and Best Performance in a Play (Lionel Newton). Awards were also given in the Best Musical Director category to Charl-Johan Lingenfelder and Stefan Lombard for their musical contribution to ‘The Rocky Horror Show’ as the production also took awards in the Best Sound Design and Best Lighting Design categories for Akbar Khan and Daniel Galloway respectively. Veteran playwright and actor Athol Fugard shone on the night with an award for Best New South African script for ‘The Shadow of the Hummingbird‘,which he shared with co-writer Paula Fourie. Shaleen Surtie-Richards was given a lifetime achievement award for her contribution to South African theatre in a career that has spanned more than 30 years. One of the highlights of the ceremony was the arrival of Joey from ‘War Horse’, the gigantic horse puppet causing a sensation as he galloped onto the stage for his special World Impact Award, the first time that this has been given at the Naledi ceremony. 17 April - 23 April 2015 The Guide The Next 48hOURS • Entertainment Guide Your guide to the best of what is happening in and around Cape Town. Why spend huge amounts of cash easily in the six figure bracket in dollars - to get an American artist to endorse the brand, when on a closer inspection and interrogation one can find inspirational leaders and visionaries who live right in our midst? What does it say about South Africa and the artistic talent we have at home? There are a number of great SA fashion designers doing great work, never mind the music artists who continue to work in their communities. I’ll mention one example: Sipho Mabuse of The Beaters and of Harari fame, who went back to do his matric and graduated at the age of 61 in 2012, some 44 years after leaving school. He attended an ABET school down Sipho Mabuse and Trevor Jones the road from his home in Pimville in Soweto and the result was an increase of 20% in learners attending ABET classes. Soweto has over 4.5 million residents and Sipho Mabuse is an icon still residing in Soweto. The iconic film composer Trevor Jones, born in District 6 and who is lauded in Hollywood and the world over, could give huge input and inspiration to generations of kids wanting to understand the entire movie soundtrack making process and he has returned to Cape Town. The beauty industry has become so bombarded with so many skincare products that it has become difficult to choose the perfect product for one’s skin. Then there’s the matter of some beauty brands trying to up sell their products to you, which might end up with you buying products that you do not need, or would really not work for your skin. So why not try a natural skincare range, one that should be made from plants and natural resource products, and that is allergen free and contain no parabens or preservatives. Many women are changing over to products that are chemical free, with a recent survey showing that almost 60% are now using organic products. A good organic choice would be the Esse range, which is endorsed by the vegan society, which means that these products are 100% natural. They have a range suitable for sensitive skins and a unique anti-aging range with active ingredients that target the problem areas like fine lines and wrinkles. Aging is inevitable. Although this might not be what you want to hear, it is unfortunately true. You can however delay the onset of aging in your skin by making sensible lifestyle decisions and by using products that deliver meaningful quantities of anti-oxidants and other actives. Some diagnostic clues to aging would be horizontal lines around the eyes, reduction in skin elasticity, muscle atrophy or loss of muscle tone and uneven pigmentation. Esse has introduced a range that targets the areas of your skin where fine lines and wrinkles appear and the active ingredients in all their products work deep down to repair the skin Oily skin resists the signs of aging for longer, but excessive oil can impact on skin health. Harsh gel washes and chemicals used to get rid of oiliness is not always the best option. These tend to strip off excess oil, making the skin dry and susceptible to blackheads and blemishes. Esse has introduced a refining cleanser, which cleans without drying out the skin. The effective cocoa exfoliator has delicate fine granules that gently polish and refine the skin’s surface, leaving it soft and smooth. If you are certain that you are ready to change your products and want to try something different, make sure that you buy the correct products. Start with a mild cleanser and gradually introduce other products to avoid irritation of your skin. If you do notice redness or a rash, stop the products immediately and allow the skin to heal by using mild skin oil. Avoid non-drying masks and dry air-conditioned atmospheres that could affect the skin. Minimise sun exposure with physical sun protection at all times by using a mineral sun block. The best solution is always to know your skin type and what it would react to. Read labels of all products that you buy, which will give you a clear indication of ingredients you may be allergic to. Acclaimed director Matthew Wild brings this melodramatic tale to life while Alex Fokkens conducts. Madame Flora (Elizabeth Frandsen), is the drunken spiritualist who uses her daughter, Monica (Amanda Osorio) and a homeless deaf-mute, Toby, to convince clients they are communicating with their dead. Madam Flora’s game soon turns deadly when she feels ghosts choking her, becomes paranoid and loses control. With the dramatic feel of a gothic short story, an orchestra part influenced by jazz, and accessible format (1 hour) it should appeal to a universal audience. * Catch ‘The Medium’ at the kykNet Theatre on Wednesday, April 28, from 7pm to 8.30pm; and on Friday, May 1, from 8.30pm to 10pm. * Catch the show at the Artscape kykNet Teater on Saturday, May 2, from 12.30pm to 1.30pm; and again from 10pm to 11pm. Tsogo Sun CEO Marcel von Aulock explains, “We believe the continued development and rejuvenation of Cape Town’s city centre will lead to growing demand for hotel accommodation. We already operate three full service hotels – The Cullinan, Southern Sun Waterfront and Southern Sun Cape Sun – as well as the recently refurbished SunSquare Cape Town in Gardens and believe the addition of an exciting new product aimed at the limited service market will allow us to provide the full spectrum of products to suit all budgets for both business and leisure travellers.” The new hotel will consist of two products in one complex, a 200-bedroom latest-design SunSquare hotel and a 300-bedroom new generation StayEasy hotel, offering a choice of affordable and stylish accommodation. Included in the complex will be banqueting and conference facilities, Tsogo Sun’s trendy and fast growing casual dining offering Vigour & Verve, retail space and approximately 300 underground parking bays. The hotel site currently includes a heritage façade which will be retained. “This investment represents our continued commitment to the area and brings the total number of Tsogo Sun rooms in the Cape Town city centre to over 2000, which is very substantial indeed,” adds von Aulock. “Our SunSquare and StayEasy hotel options each have their own character and appeal, but the overriding offering in both is affordable, high-quality accommodation. We’re delighted to have this opportunity to increase our presence in one of the most vibrant cities on the continent.” Construction is expected to begin in May 2015 and to be completed by September 2017, in time for peak summer tourist season. Tsogo Sun’s portfolio includes over 90 hotels and 14 casino and entertainment destinations throughout South Africa, Africa, the Seychelles and Abu Dhabi. It has been three eventful years since the launch of MyCiTi’s innovative automated fare system and the myconnect card. More than 500 000 myconnect cards have been issued and they have become a must-have item in the wallets and purses of residents and visitors to Cape Town. Y our myconnect card is much more than a ticket to ride the ever-expanding network of MyCiTi routes. It’s also a sophisticated banking product. There are two sections to the myconnect. One allows you to load Mover points that save you 30% on fares, no matter what time or what day of the week you travel. The other allows you to load money, which can be used to pay for your MyCiTi fares at the Standard rate, or to use a debit card to pay for purchases of up to R200 at any shop that accepts debit cards. You can have the best of both worlds by loading money in both sections at once time. The only drawback to it being a banking card is that it has an expiry date on the face of the card. If you were one of the first passengers to start using the system, or you received a free card in one of the promotions around the launch of a new route, your card may be one of the first batch of 10 000 that are expiring on 31 May 2015. Here’s the good news Check the face of the card and if the date is 05/15 then you only have a few more weeks to use it. The good news is that the balance on your card, whether it is loaded as Standard or Mover points, will not expire and can be immediately transferred What passengers like about MyCiTi If your card expires in May, don’t wait. Visit the dedicated card expiry kiosks at Civic Centre or Table View stations to get your replacement card. to a new card, which will be issued to you free. Get your new replacement card free of charge at one of the special card expiry kiosks at Civic Centre and Table View stations. All you have to do is to take your ID book, passport or driver’s licence along with your expiring card to get your new card. The process takes 10- to-15 minutes. Your balance will be transferred immediately. And now for the bad news If you leave it to the last few days – like many other passengers will do – there will be long queues at the card expiry kiosks, which will be frustrating. Because of the nature of the card expiry, Changes to MyCiTi services in Camps Bay O n Monday, 20 April 2015 major roadworks will begin along part of Camps Bay Drive. This will mean changes to both MyCiTi routes until around September. Diede Melson “MyCiTi is as good as anything we have at home in the Netherlands, and there are so many MyCiTi buses – I see them all the time – which is great.” Cindy Zibaya “I commute from home in Khayelitsha to Sea Point, and MyCiTi saves me about three hours a day in travelling time. It’s very good.” there can be no extension of the deadline of 31 May 2015. If you miss the deadline, your card won’t work when you want to tap in on 1 June and you will have to buy a new card for R35. You won’t lose the money loaded on your expired card but it will take 31 days for the balance to be transferred to your new one. 106 Civic Centre - Camps Bay (clockwise) This route will operate as a circular route in Camps Bay only and it will no longer serve the central city area.
