Mother Nature expressed herself in unusual ways this winter season. Ms. Nature acquired a new boyfriend this year—Global warming! With all of the “dating” that Ms. Nature did, she neglected some of her duties: rain and snow. Because of her actions, our winter season was cut quite short, and unfortunately our White Water Rafting trip was cancelled. While 4SW was surprised at Ms. Nature’s actions, we are not deterred. Until she drops her negative influence, we will continue to provide fun and interesting events for you to participate in. Spring brings in a multitude of activities. Bike riding comes into play with beach rides and long lunches. For the more adventurous, mountain biking with beautiful scenery and a dash of excitement is enjoyed. Charity walks begin. Hiking starts with short episodes into the mountains, gradually developing into longer, but enjoyable hours of fun. Happy hours begin with great drinks and food, as well as camaraderie. Where can you enjoy all of these events?? Right here in your back yard with the help of 4SW. Check out the newsletter, Facebook, and Meet Up for upcoming events, and we are sure to keep you occupied. And while we enjoy the spring season, perhaps Mother Nature will come to her senses and dump Global warming! In late March of this year, it was sweaty Summer on the slopes! At Mammoth Mountain on the weekend of March 27th thru 29th, 2015, the racers of member race leagues (and their member clubs) of the Far West Racing Association (FWRA) made their annual journey to the alpine site of the championships. These races pit the best racers from the western states against one another in feverish Slalom (SL) and Giant Slalom (GS) competitions. All three days featured high temps in the mid 50’s and the resulting mid-day melt that deteriorated the early morning hard pack into snow-cone quality slush. Needless to say, most racers fled the slopes of wet glop as soon as the morning races were done. And Mammoth Mountain resembled the flanks of a palomino pony with its patches of stubborn white mid-season left-overs intermixed with steadily widening patches of brown mud. Lacking significant new snow, the slope conditions more resembled typical late June than typical late March! As usual, Friday featured Pacesetter (PS) races hotly competed with the same fervor as medal races, and race clinics to help non-PS racers to prepare for the next two days of competitions. Those with the best handicaps from the PS races win the privilege and duty of pacesetting the races for the lower tier skill level competitions to come the next ski season (yours truly has been a Pacesetter since I first competed in the PS races many years ago!). Two GS races were immediately followed by two SL races as soon as the race hill was reconfigured from GS gates to SL gates. Ed Monteiro, competing in his 2nd consecutive PS races, and I finished with great times in each race, with Ed having the fastest time of his group which included several higher skill level racers! I, too, a GS specialist, bested a few high level racers, especially in the SL competitions which are not my specialty. Saturday was SL race day and Ed did well in his new skill class of SV4 (Expert). I, on the other hand, literally “fell” victim to one of the many hazards of SL racing. I skied too tight a line at the steep top of the course trying to get through an early “hair-pin” gate-set, clipped the first gatepole with my inside ski, was consequently spun around backwards by the impact, and thence thrown onto my back. Simultaneously my inside ski released and hurtled up and away, thereby ensuring the end of my medal chances, these being combined time races for mine and Ed’s skill class. I slid half way down the steeps mostly head first and on my back, with my ski following slowly (thankfully due to the ski break) like a faithful puppy dutifully following its owner to his unknown denouement. Ed (7th of 12) and I (DNF) finished out of the medals, was so great the competition. On Sunday the GS races were competed and both Ed and I faired far better in those. Ed had the best time of his 12 racers class after his first run, skied hard but slower the slushy 2 nd run, and finished in 2nd place for a Silver medal, and in his first ever GS race after having been “bumped’ into the SV4 class weeks earlier in the SoCal Championships! I skied exceptionally fast both of my runs also to a 2nd place finish in the SV2 (Elite 2) class, missing 1st by a mere 19 100ths of a second (0.19!!!). Please congratulate Ed on his stellar results when next you see him. Me, I’m used to medaling, so a pat on the back will suffice. Join us next season for more great skiing and racing fun!!!
