Starting Line
• Spectators, please follow the spectator route to the spectator area for the start (see team meeting area map). Do not stand on the shoulder of the road to watch the start.
• The start will take place in three waves. Your wave start will be indicated by the sticker on your
race bib: Blue sticker – first wave. Yellow sticker – 2nd wave. Red sticker – 3rd wave.
• Runners need to stay in the team meeting area until the DJ makes the announcement for your

During the Race
• This event is all about the girls! Please keep all encouragement and motivation positive (see
Running Buddy Tips).
After the Race
• Please plan to stay until EVERYONE from your team has finished the run.

the prize drawing to start around 10:00am and will take place at the stage. (We will wait until
the last runner has come in).

THE GOTR GUIDE
TO HAVING A GREAT 5K!
Racing Etiquette
•
Do not stop abruptly! Should you need to walk, please move to the far right of the street
and try to ease your pace into a walk so you don’t trip the runners behind you.
•
If a faster runner approaches behind you, move to the right so they can pass on the left.
•
If you need to pass a slower runner/walk, stay on the left (the person you’re passing should
be on your right).
•
If you need stop for any reason, move to the side of the road and step off the course.
•
No dogs or bicycles allowed on course.
•
While strollers are discouraged due to crowding, participants may run or walk with a stroller
if they start at the very back of the race (even if running with a Girl on the Run participant).
•
Be sure shoes are tied securely before the race starts! Loose laces are a tripping hazard.
•
Run or walk no more than two abreast so other participants can pass your group if needed.
•
Pay attention to your surroundings. Although the traffic flow on & around the course will
be controlled by the Cayce Department of Public Safety, it is your responsibility to watch
for oncoming traffic!
•
Encourage other runners and thank our volunteers!
•
Most importantly, enjoy your race!
Finish Line Etiquette
• Once you have crossed the finish line, keep moving forward until the end of the finish
chute.
• Do not stop in or crowd around the finish chute!
• Runners who have already finished are strongly encouraged to meet as a group to cheer for
teammates who have not yet finished.
• Enjoy the post-race refreshments, but remember to share with the other hungry and thirsty
runners.
• Be proud of your accomplishment!

improvement, focuses on effort and peer support, and fosters belief in the value and

exhibit favoritism toward high-ability team members, and encourage competition among
members) produce anxiety, less enjoyment and more negative relationships with others.1

Tips for Positive Encouragment
As a running buddy, your behavior can help foster a lifelong appreciation of physical
activity. Girls on the Run promotes positive encouragement for all participants, even if
they’re having a bad day. Please see below for phrases GOTR does not recommend and
some suggested alternatives:
“Try to beat at least one more person.”
“Let’s try to catch up to those girls so we can cheer
them on and encourage each other.”
“You’re ne ver going to f inish w it h t hat
b ad att itude.“
“That sounds like negative self-talk to me. What
did you learn about turning around negative selftalk in GOTR? Does your team have a signal you
use when you hear negative talk?“
“You’re not really prepared for this 5k. Do
you want to drop out instead of finishing?“
“Let’s give it our best effort this time. It doesn’t
matter how long it takes, I’ll be so proud of you
for finishing!“
“You can’t let her beat you.“
“I’m proud of you for doing your best and
choosing the pace that’s right for you.“
“Your time isn’t going to be very good if you don’t “Let’s talk about the personal goal you made for this
hurry up.“
5k. What do you need to do to reach that goal?“
Running buddies have two very important jobs:
Stay with your girl at all times and provide positive encouragement!
