A convenient alternative to writing checks for your offering
If you’re writing checks and preparing offering envelopes, you may find it more convenient to give online. In a few short minutes, you can set up a donation that will process automatically on a recurring basis. Recurring donations are convenient and will provide Ascension with much needed consistent support throughout the year. Ascension members
who are already enrolled in this program are finding that it works very well. Contact Ed
or Marge Finley, Bev Cook-Finley, or the church office for further details. There is no
requirement that you be enrolled for any particular amount of time, and it’s quick to
change if circumstances warrant that.
DID YOU KNOW?
Our church has a wonderful cleaning service run by Sam and Rose Boateng. Their generous financial help to our congregation was announced at our annual meeting, but in case you missed
that, the finance team wants you to know about it. Sam and Rose decided they could help our
tight church budget by reducing their fees by $500 per month. What an amazing help that is in
our time of shortfall of offering donations. We thank Sam and Rose for caring so much about Ascension.
Invitation to Finance Meetings
As you know from the annual meeting and 2015 budget, Ascension needs to carefully monitor spending this year and encourage fundraising to help with our income. Ascension’s Finance Ministry Team
VERY MUCH wants more input and involvement from congregational members. Consider joining the
team. Meetings are on a Thursday at 6:30 p.m. They are scheduled for the Thursday that precedes
the next Church Council meeting (which is always the second Tuesday of the month). If you can spare
some time and wish to help carefully manage our church funds, you are invited to join us. You will be
heartily welcomed! If you have questions, feel free to contact the chairperson, Bev Cook-Finley, or the
vice-chair, Sam Boateng. Either of them would be most happy to speak with you.
YOUR 2015 GIVING ENVELOPES—Pick up your box of Giving Envelopes at
the back of the Sanctuary today!! Your box will be found under
alphabetical order. If you cannot find your box, please write your name,
address and telephone number on the sheet provided at the Giving
Envelope table. — Allan Hiscox
Update on Ascension’s Financial Situation
It is the desire of the finance committee to keep the congregation informed periodically
concerning Ascension’s 2015 financial status.
At this time, spending (although being carefully controlled and staying mostly within the
budget) is exceeding income by almost $20,000. At this time last year that negative difference was almost $34,000.
The overall offering for the year is up about $11,000. That is a positive sign as the downward trend in offering last year was significant. It is important to note, however, that this report includes two significant, large gifts that are particular families’ gifts for the year.
The following are more specific figures:
Total Income
1/01/2014-2/28/2014
$52,156.92
1/01/2015-2/28/2015
$62,237.64
Total Expenses
1/01/2014-2/28/2014
$86,026.21
1/01/2015-2/28/2015
$82,096.93
If you have any questions regarding this information, feel free to contact Steven Boring,
Bev Cook-Finley, or Sam Boateng.
Ascension’s approved 2015 budget includes $10,000 of income needed from fundraising.
If you have ideas or are willing to help plan an activity, please let those same people
named above know…or consider saying “yes” when a church member asks you to assist in a
fundraising event.
You could also consider joining the finance committee to support our efforts in
closely monitoring Ascension’s financial status. Your participation would be
appreciated.

JESUS IS ALIVE!
YEAH JESUS!
COSI is currently showing the movie JERUSALEM at the National Geographic Giant Screen Theater.
It’s likely that a church outing will be planned for people wanting to go as a group. On the huge
screen you get to see a Palm Sunday procession coming into Jerusalem. You get to see a group of
pilgrims following the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday. And you get to see the Easter Vigil
at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. There are candles everywhere filling that ancient church with
Easter light. Some of the huge candles look more like torches. (This movie takes you to places and
events in Jerusalem that are not regularly filmed.)
After celebrating Lent, and walking with Jesus through Holy Week, I love to hear the Hallelujah’s
sounding again, and the Easter refrain – Christ is Risen. He is risen indeed. As Lent took us through
40 days (Actually 46 counting the Sundays in Lent) the Easter season will take us through 40 days up
until Ascension, or 50 days up to Pentecost Sunday. Traditionally we have made more focus on the
Lenten of the stories of Jesus appearing to his disciples after he has been raised from the dead, like
on April 12 we will again hear of Jesus meeting his frightened and grieving disciples behind locked
doors, and showing them his wounded hands and side. We get to join the disciples as they have
some aha moments, when much of what Jesus said and did before his death now makes more
sense. We get to hear Jesus preparing his disciples for their mission. (The word ‘apostle’ means one
who is sent out.) Jesus speaks about the Holy Spirit whom he is about to send. Really we could say
that the Holy Spirit is like the continuing presence of the risen Jesus. Jesus has ascended to heaven,
but through the Holy Spirit is also very much present on earth. I’m praying that we will again hear
and sense that we are Jesus’ sent people, his people in mission. We have a purpose in making Jesus
known as those first disciples did. And even if we never live away from Columbus, we are sent
people; sent to our family, sent to work friends and colleagues and acquaintances and strangers as
Jesus’ ambassadors. We are his agents of forgiveness and Shalom. Our calling includes praying for
enemies, and building bridges wherever possible. We will also be having a Ministry Fair in the Easter
Season – on April 26 – and will again get to see some of the ways of serving in and through our
church.
Jesus sends you.
Pastor Tim.

Message from Vicar Austin
The Future of the Church
I have always been a firm believer that the youth are one of the most important
aspects of the Church. As much as I love working with adults in the parish, the youth are the future of
the Church and need a little extra care. If you lose all the youth, the church will eventually die off. This is
not only true for Ascension, but also for every church throughout the world. Keeping this in mind, the
youth committee has been doing a lot of work with the youth in the church these past couple weeks.
On Sunday March 15th the youth went to the Noor Islamic Center in Dublin. We had 13 youth and
four adults attend. Sam, our guide and presenter, walked us through a class they call “Islam 101.” It
was a simple presentation that shared the basics of the Islam faith and what it means to be a Muslim.
He gave a lot of interesting facts and led discussion with the youth. I have to say that the youth were
extremely interested throughout the entire presentation and asked great questions. Not only do they
now have a better understanding of a popular religion, it allowed our youth to come together and make
memories. For example, while watching their prayer service, one of our youth turned to me and said
“Hey, I know that boy!” She will be able to better talk to that young man and overtime, through open
dialog, build a better relationship with him. She is able to discuss what she experienced and compare it
to what he feels about Islam and the Muslim faith. Growth comes from learning and being open minded
to things that might be outside ones comfort zone.
It is good for our youth to understand a religion that their peers are affiliated. I believe the same
is true for adults. Just the other day I started the dialog with the Noor Islamic Center about setting up a
second visit, but this time it would be for adults. It is good for us to open that dialog with people of a
different faith. When we hear what they believe, we can start to truly form what we believe. You never
know what you actually believe until you are stretched.
At the end of our visit we stopped at Graters to get a scoop of ice cream. As we were enjoying the snack
we debriefed the trip. We all shared something that we did and didn’t like about the tour and
presentation. I followed that up with a simple question, “If we were to teach a class similar to Islam 101
called Christianity 101, what would we teach?” It allowed the youth to deeply ponder not only what they
heard but what the building blocks of their faith are. I will ask you the same thing. What would you
teach in Christianity 101? What are the most essential parts of your faith in Christ?
The youth are the future of the Church, but that doesn’t mean we all don’t need to stretch
ourselves daily. No matter how old or young we are shaping the future of the Church. I hope that you will
open yourself enough to join us when we travel back to the Noor Islamic Center. The youth loved it and I
know you will too.
Peace and blessings upon you all,
Vicar Austin

Laser Engraving is produced on clay bricks The combination of computer and
high power laser light enables us to engrave highly detailed graphics. The intense laser light turns the engraved surface to a glass. The result is a very detailed image that is permanently apart of the brick, even with the surface of the
brick.
To order one or more bricks for you, your family, friends, and other loved ones,
please fill in the form below. Each brick will cost $50 and can take up to three
lines of text, 20 characters – including spaces – per line. Symbols can be added

Challenging Conversations”— with Pastor Tim and visiting speakers in Acton Hall.
Over the past couple of years Pastor Peter Marty has been writing a study guide for the monthly national Lutheran magazine called “Challenging Conversations” These have been used for the past few
months in the Wednesday morning bible study group. They really have got some great conversations
going. Pastor Tim will use these guides to get into the various topics, and provide some teaching with
them. There will be some time for discussion around the tables, and for sharing in the large
group.

Hello April, Bunnies and Butterflies! We love when April arrives because this also
means that winter is becoming just a memory. We begin our month with our Spring
Classroom Parties and our Spring Break! We just want to think Spring!! On Friday,
April 17th, we will hold our annual Spring Fun Day as we welcome Metro Parks to
ALP. They will present the program
"Insects and Butterflies". This is so exciting because just a week or so later our
caterpillars are scheduled to arrive. The children always love to watch the
transformation from caterpillar to butterfly right in their very own classroom. The
Columbus Zoo will be visiting us on Wednesday, April 29th to present "Talk with the
Animals". We love when they visit and we are hoping that they bring Gracie the Fancy
Chicken with them. She is
adorable!!
Open Enrollment for the 2015-2016 Preschool year is in full swing.
Registration information is available on the table in the Preschool Lobby as well as on
the counter in the church office. School tours can be scheduled by contacting the

NEW GUIDELINES FOR DONATING BOOKS TO THE LIBRARY:
We are a specialized library dealing with religious, inspirational, and educational materials.
Donations must follow these guidelines.
Donations must be clean and in good condition.
Before a donation will be accepted it must be preapproved by the librarian. Please leave a
list of titles & their conditions in the Library mailbox in the church office.
PRETEEN & TEEN SECTION:
I have been weeding this section. Many of these books are in “new” condition. However, they were
purchased in the 80’s and 90’s and were never checked out. I’ve skimmed & read some of these
books. Many seem unrealistic & a bit out dated (often written before cell phones and computers
became common) for preteens & teens of our time. However, I would appreciate your input. In the
next few months, if you would like to look at these books & give me your impressions, It would be
most appreciated.
T-Bone Trouble by Nancy Simpson Levene is a chapter book for children between the ages of
seven and ten. It’s theme is gossip and how it can hurt people. Because of the untruthful gossip that
Melissa spreads about Alex (Please note the reader is not told what the gossip is until the end of the
book), many of Alex’s classmates won’t even talk to her. The story is disjointed as it follows Alex and
her friends through comic situations.

us as an example. We are always looking for volunteers to participate in this ministry
to the poor and needy. Any donations of food or household items can be deposited in
the Food Pantry tub located under coat rack by the church office. Please contact
Irene Candy (614 888-2659) for more information and/or transportation to the Food
Pantry.
