Did you know?
Your finance team wants you to know how much it is appreciated that
most of our church members are able to receive the ChiRho online. 83%
of our church members (and all out-of-state past members who’ve
requested the ChiRho) receive the Chi Rho online and in color (cost –
nothing). Of the remaining 17%, 2/3 pick up a hard copy at the church, and
that saves postage costs. Each black and white hard copy of the Chi Rho
costs $.60/copy (printing and paper). That comes to a cost of $16/month,
or $192/year.
When we mailed the Chi Rho out to the congregation, the cost in copying,
preparation (labels and securing fasteners), and bulk mailing equaled
$282.92/month, or $3395/year. Today our mailing costs equal only $42/
month, or $504/year, so that homebound and seniors who have requested
mailings can receive their ChiRhos. The church is happy to mail those
copies.
Our total current annual costs to produce the Chi Rho is $58/month, or
$696/year. By using electronic media, Ascension has saved $2699/year.

COUNTING DOWN TO 2017 - WITH LUTHER’S HYMNS
The countdown is on to the 500th celebration of the Lutheran Reformation, officially October 31st
2017. Ascension has been invited by Cantor Connection to host a large Hymn Festival on Sunday
June 14th. (Cantor Connection is the local chapter of the Association of American Lutheran Church
Musicians.) This will be the third in a series of 5 annual hymn festivals that are all focused on Martin
Luther’s music. The first in 2013 was about Luther’s liturgical music, the second (2014) about his
catechism chorales, and now the third at our church will be about Luther’s hymns – his preaching
through the words and music of the hymns. A choir is being formed from singers from local Lutheran
choirs. (Singers from our church are invited.) The choir will be under the direction of Dr. Zebulon
Highben. The choir will rehearse from 3.00 – 5.00pm on June 14th. Then we will be providing a
dinner for the choir in the Haimerl Center. The Hymn Festival will start at 7pm in our sanctuary, and
goes for about 80 minutes. The program will take us through the church year with Luther’s hymns. 8
organists will be involved. A reception will follow in the Haimerl Center. There will be a number of
ways to be involved on the day – to assist with the celebration.
Personally I think this hymn festival is a wonderful way to kick start us into planning mode for other
ways we can count down to the anniversary, and then celebrate it with passion in 2017. Dave Kern
has kindly volunteered to head the planning, so let him know of ideas that you have for the
festivities. (2017 will also be the 100th anniversary of our congregation, of Indianola/Ascension
Lutheran.) Chad Loomis has volunteered to lead the focus on getting our sanctuary ready for the
events of 2017, and beyond.
I am reading through the chronological bible again this year, and have gotten though the Pentateuch,
the first five books of the Bible. What has struck me in this year’s readings are all the instructions for
festivals, for the gathering of the people to celebrate God’s powerful hand in their history and their
lives. Let’s make use of the opportunity of 2017 to be innovative and creative in gathering and
regathering people at Ascension, and celebrating God’s good work through history, and now.

The Season of Easter
These past several months have been an adventure for Lyneѐ and me. We had
been anticipating Owen being with us for nine months and couldn’t picture what it
would be like with him. We knew that the day he would come would be the greatest day of our lives and
that our lives would never be the same, and we were right. Owen is now a couple months old and
changing every day. The pregnancy was just the beginning of something beautiful. Although it was
difficult and uncomfortable for Lyneѐ, the pregnancy was just the beginning of the true hard work of
parenthood.
I believe that a wedding is the same way. I see television shows about planning that big day of your
wedding. There are shows about people that design luxury cakes, dresses, flowers, you name it.
American weddings are a 51 billion dollar industry each year with an average wedding costing just over
25 thousand dollars. Personally I think that is a bit extreme because people plan and plan for this big
event but the wedding is just one day, the marriage is the hard work that should be prepared for.
In a lot of ways the anticipation of Easter is much the same way. We prepared for an amazing
celebration on April 5th, but Easter isn’t a onetime occurrence; Easter runs through the month of May.
We don’t have one day to remember Christ’s victory over sin and death, we have weeks of worship
dedicated to Christ’s resurrection. The last week of Easter is May 17th. With Easter Sunday just being
the start of the Easter season, we have time to reflect on the significance of what the resurrection means
for the entire Church. Our anticipation for Easter and the celebration that follows is great but the
celebration doesn’t end after you leave the four walls of our church Easter Sunday afternoon. Don’t
celebrate one single day, celebrate for the entire season.
Owen was born February 7th at 10:26 in the morning. We didn’t end the celebration on that
afternoon. We didn’t even end the celebration the next day. We celebrate the miracle that is his birth
every day, even when he is fussy and can’t be calmed down. The Church should view Easter the same
way. We should celebrate the Easter victory over death every day, even when it is tough to have faith,
when we mourn, even when we hear chaos surrounding the world. Celebrate that there was an empty
tomb and because of that fact there is something more for us all; something that big can’t be contained
in my day of celebration. Alleluia He has risen.

Hi Ascension Family,
Join me at Ascension Lutheran Church on June 22—26, 2015 from 9 am to Noon for Vacation Bible
School.
Our kids will have ALL ACCESS to the one and only God, at our week long Vacation Bible School.
BACKSTAGE PASS: ALL ACCESS is where we will explore with the children a deeper understanding of
the important role they play in God’s plan.
The action at VBS takes place BACKSTAGE at Studio 210, named for the theme verse, Ephesians
2:10. From CREW CALL to THE W RAP each day the children will tour Studio 210 and get excited
about how their special gifts and abilities make them unique and amazing.
In the Prop Room the children will make crafts. Bible study time is held at Central Casting. Of
course VBS wouldn't be complete without games and snacks. The real fun kicks in at Sound Stage
B where the kids will make their own music videos to the VBS soundtrack. But wait—Friday Premier
is a totally red carpet treatment for the first showing of their videos!

To those of the family that are sixth graders up to 101 years old or older, I could use your help
before, during and after the week of Vacation Bible School so that this is an exciting and uplifting
week for all involved. Some ways you can help: with decorations, donations of food and supplies,
work with the children by leading or assisting at an activity, coming to our family night, helping with
the Friday Premier, and of course tear down and Prayers through out.

Challenging Conversations”— with Pastor Tim and visiting speakers in Acton Hall.
Over the past couple of years Pastor Peter Marty has been writing a study guide for the monthly national Lutheran magazine called “Challenging Conversations” These have been used for the past few
months in the Wednesday morning bible study group. They really have got some great conversations
going. Pastor Tim will use these guides to get into the various topics, and provide some teaching with
them. There will be some time for discussion around the tables, and for sharing in the large
group.

That is just what the WATOTO CHILDRENS CHOIR does!!!
If you heard them when they sang here several years ago
you will remember their joy.
If you have not heard them before, you are in for a real treat.
The children from Uganda will be singing at
Gethsemane Lutheran Church on TUESDAY, MAY 12, at 7:00 p.m.
Let's give the children a big warm welcome.
They are sponsored by the Swahili congregation at Gethsemane.
The children and the adult chaperons arrive on Tuesday afternoon and will be served a dinner
before their concert After the concert, they will need places to spend the night. They will depart on
Wednesday morning.
HELP IS NEEDED!! If you would like to contribute a dish or dessert for their dinner, or if you could host 2
or 3 children and an adult chaperone, (The children can share a double bed and you will need to
provided a breakfast and a packed lunch for each of them), or if you have questions, please contact
Peggy Dlusky at 785-1799.

Garden Time
April 2 was the first meeting this year of the gardening ministry. Because of lack of
volunteers and interest from church members, we will only be able to garden the
front portion of the pools. The remainder will be given to NNEMAP to garden for
their pantry. Of course the plots will still be gardened by the Nepalese.
Plans are to buy amending soil on April 9th and to mix it into the pools and plant
cool weather crops on April 10. As they grow, we will continue to weed the
surrounding area and clean-up the continuing debris from the surrounding businesses... About the
2nd week in May, we will plant the seedlings that are being raised for us by OSU.
Dr. Doris Ing who received a completed D. Min. from United Theological Seminary in Dayton and is
from United Methodist Church, is volunteering in the garden on Tuesday mornings. Stop by and

April 13, 2015—For those of you who have asked to be kept in touch as I go to Tanzania, here is your first
report. It is the day before takeoff with Hildegard Kamazima, friend, and as many water filters, blankets,
and other items as we can carry in something like 9 suitcases total. It was far too expensive to ship everything so here we go "into the wild blue yonder". Please pray for us and those we travel with as we first go
to Brussels, then Entebbe, Uganda, arriving late at night on the 16th, and then proceeding into Bukoba by
land travel on the 17th. On the way, we cross the equator - and who knows what other encounters
await. Please pray for safe passage over the border - with all our water filters and gear. I will be getting my
visa at the border - so just that will be something to pray about - it is the first time I have tried it this way.
The prayers for our ministry to TZ in church were touching since they were at the end of a baptism of
a mother and her teenage son. It was also great to say good byes to some of you in the process. I felt
your love.
Today is rushing to do last minute things, including clean up the litter in my apartment.
I'll write soon as things are settled in Bukoba.

Preschool Happenings———————--Mary Lynne Magnacca
Well...We have made it to the last month of our school year. Our month of May is just as
busy as our September with so many wonderful end-of-the-year activities. On your
mark....Get set....GO!!! We begin May with our Annual Bike-a-Thon. This is a great
fundraiser for our school as well as a fun event for the students to participate in. Our
Spring Art Show will be held during the week of May 18th. ALC Members are welcome to
view the show on Sunday, May 17th. All of our students will have two entries in the
show as well as many class group projects. ALP definitely has some talented students!!
On Wednesday, May 20th we will be welcoming our Grandparents (or other family and/or
friends) to ALP for a very special day. Our guests will be treated to a Continental
Breakfast and will enjoy the lovely singing voices of our little ones. Then, they will spend
time in our classrooms, doing an art activity together and touring the art show. Our
preschoolers love to show off their school. Our year ends with a wonderful closing
program and a potluck lunch. What a wonderful year!! We are looking forward to the
new school year and more fun and learning!

A few weeks ago when I went to the library to work on several boxes of donations, I noticed a DVD on my
desk. It was God Is Not Dead. I remembered that a group from Ascension went to see this film and
decided to take it home to review. The main storyline in this film is that of an atheist philosophy professor
pushing his beliefs on his students by making them write, “God is dead” on a piece of paper and sign it.
Only one student refuses and is then given the job of proving that the professor is wrong. Even though this
is the main storyline, there are several smaller stories throughout the film.
The main storyline is presented well. The arguments used by the student to prove that God exists are
obviously well researched and even impressive. If the filmmakers had stopped there, I would have written
that this is an excellent film. Unfortunately, they did not. Instead they decided to use several other
scenarios. Many were short, shallow, & stereotypical, hurting the film’s credibility. They also threw in a
few cameos with Willie & Korie from the television series Duck Dynasty. This really hurt its credibility.
Willie and Korie are both graduates of Harding University, a Christian University in Arizona, but considering
that the main focus was to use science to convince doubters and bring them closer to God, this cameo
may, for some people, completely destroyed what the filmmakers attempted to do.
I have known a few atheists, who have told me that they could not believe in God, because they were too
pragmatic; they needed “real-world” proof. These people might have been impressed with the scientific
argument, but would have had difficulty with the short scenarios, and the clincher that would have
reinforced their pragmatic stance would have been the appearance of Willie and Korie.
I applaud what the filmmakers attempted to do. However, they needed better writers capable of creating
a more cohesive script for such an important purpose. This film should have revolved solely around the
professor & the student and things directly related to them. If the writers liked the short scenarios, they
could have easily been expanded into other films. They tried to present too much and in doing so
detracted greatly from the effectiveness of the film.

LUTHERAN SOCIAL SERVICES FOOD PANTRY
Our schedule for working at the Food Pantry for 2015 is: Friday, May 22nd We arrive
at the Food Pantry (Frebis and Champion Aves, Columbus) at 10 am and work until
2:30 pm. We help in giving clients needed groceries and other items. We bring our
own lunch/drink and enjoy a day of fellowship and service as Jesus' life gave us as an
example. We are always looking for volunteers to participate in this ministry to the
poor and needy. Any donations of food or household items can be deposited in the
Food Pantry tub located under coat rack by the church office. Please contact
Irene Candy (614 888-2659) for more information and/or transportation to the Food
Pantry.
OUTREACH MINISTRIES PANTRY PROGRAM
Give money to our Teen Program, our Pantry Posse, the first Sunday each month, or place in an envelope in the
offering plate marked LSS Food Pantry. Ascension continues to support our Food Pantry every week. And God bless
our monthly volunteers! Remember Manager Dave Drumm buys food for the shelves with your money for 14¢ a
pound. Every dollar you donate buys over 10 lbs of food or about 3 bags of groceries!!! All donations to LSS, either
cash or checks made out to LSS Food Pantry, help with immediate needs, which change daily.
BASIC RULES FOR DONATIONS Our Food Pantry needs packaged goods like rice, pasta,
raisins, side dishes in boxes and packages to feed families of up to 6-8 people.
Specific Needs:
Tuna and Tuna Helper; Hot Chocolate
Sugar free items for diabetics;
Low sodium canned items
Baby Powder, Shampoo,
Diapers & Wipes
Personal Items:
Deodorant, Kleenex; Toothbrushes and Toothpaste;
Shampoo, Feminine Products ; Hand Soaps,
All kinds of cleaning products
Everyday Needs:
Coffee in small jars (1 or 2 lb cans)
Flour; Canned Fruit and applesauce is
very good to add; Canned veggies (no
green beans or corn); Puddings ; KOOLAID IN SMALL PKGS.
Fruit cups, Pasta and Rice side dishes
like Rice-A-Roni, Noodle-Roni, and
Spaghettios, Macaroni and Cheese;
Tea Bags; Hot oatmeal in pkgs.; Peanut
butter; Chocolate Syrup
Be sure to save the following items that our ladies collect and forward to several Ministries,
where they can be used asap.
1. Pink and White Coupons for Education, which can be found on so many products now in our
grocery which benefit our Local Schools.
2. Please bring your grocery bags, paper and plastic, for the Food Pantry each week.
