Resource Directory of
Forensic Psychology Pre-doctoral Internship
Training Programs
Introduction
This resource directory provides a state-by-state listing of predoctoral internship
programs that offer training opportunities in forensic psychology. The directory is
intended for prospective internship applicants seeking predoctoral training in clinicalforensic psychology.
The directory was compiled by identifying internships across all 50 states and Canadian
provinces through the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers
(APPIC) Directory On-line. Broad inclusion criteria were utilized by including
internships that listed any forensic training opportunities (either a major rotation or an
informal/minor rotation). Surveys were mailed to 186 training programs of which 88
responded (overall response rate of 47.3%). Thirty-five respondents indicated that
forensic training was not offered at the training site or was not a significant component of
the training program warranting inclusion in the directory. Therefore, the directory
contains 63 internship programs with a variety of forensic training experiences across
multiple settings.
Previous versions of this directory offered limited information regarding rotations and the
types of training experiences available. The current directory contains specific
information for each forensic rotation (modality, setting, population), types of forensic
assessment and treatment experiences, and percentage of time interns spend in each
training experience. This information was collected to facilitate locating an internship
site that offers training opportunities within specific areas of interest. In addition, email
and website information have also been included to facilitate contact with the internship
program. When examining individual training sites in the directory use the following
key (N/A = not applicable, N/C = not completed).
The resource directory was supported by the American Psychology-Law Society and the
American Academy of Forensic Psychology. The directory was compiled by Keith R.
Cruise, M.L.S., Ph.D., and graduate students in the Forensic-Clinical Program at Sam
Houston State University. Questions regarding the development of the resource directory
can be directed to [email protected].

Intern is exposed to the entire scope of forensic psychological
services available. This includes pretrial and post-trial experience
with both male and female patients. The intern is assigned cases
for psychological evaluation from both pretrial and post-trial
wards. A minor rotation is also available. An attempt is made to
tailor the trainee’s experience to his/her needs, strengths, interests
in conjunction with hospital needs. Supervision is plentiful and
typically an intern has at least six supervisors.

Interns have the opportunity to perform forensic
evaluations addressing such issues as competence to stand
trial, insanity, sentencing, capital sentencing, and sex
offender status. Interns attend a didactic forensic seminar
and are encouraged to receive additional training through
an arrangement with the Institute of Law, Psychiatry, and
Public Policy (ILPPP) at UVA. Interns can also do
electives in forensic psychology in areas such as mental
health malpractice, personal injury, and forensic
neuropsychology.

community psychology as well as forensic and legal issues
with children and families. The clinic is well known for
community-based research on current issues such as
children’s courtroom testimony, the effects of violence on
children, young offenders, custody and access assessments,
and violence prevention. Training activities include
specialized assessments (child welfare, custody and access,

The Child Sexual Abuse rotation provides services to abuse
victims ranging in age from infancy to age 16. Interns
provide assessment of the abuse, the child’s post-disclosure
adjustment, and factors that may attenuate or exacerbate
sequelae, such as child’s social support network and the
child’s involvement with legal proceedings. Therapeutic
interventions emphasize coping and recovery. Interns
become involved in both group and individual therapy.
Therapeutic techniques involve play therapy, systematic
desensitization, stress management, and family counseling.
Interns consult with various community services, including
child protective services, the Crown Attorney’s office, and
the Victim/Witness Assistance Program. Case supervision
is also available for interns assisted in other forms of
childhood trauma.

The Regional Psychiatric Center (RPC) is a fully accredited
teaching hospital which provides mental health inpatient
treatment and assessment services for a wide variety of
forensic patients. The facility has four independent, multidisciplinary program units. Bow unit is a 100-bed
psychiatric rehabilitation program for patients with acute
and chronic Axis I disorders, dual diagnoses, and
intellectual impairments, Churchill is a 12-bed intensive
healing program for female offenders. Clearwater is a 48bed sex offender program. Mackenzie and Assiniboine
units have 46 beds for an aggressive behavior control
program. All programs are based on cognitive-behavioral

relapse prevention approaches. Following brief orientation
to the RPC, one primary program unit is chosen on which
to become a fully involved member of the team, and the
intern negotiates specific training experiences with the
Rotation Coordinator. Subsequently, interns become
involved in provision of comprehensive treatment programs
for high risk or high need offenders. Experience can also be
gained in forensic assessments, including National Parole
Board assessments which focus on risk for future violence.
Ongoing program evaluation is integral to RPC programs,
with a separate department aiding in the collection and
analysis of data. Prior to placement at the RPC, all interns
must complete a security clearance form. RPC prefers
inters with a specific interest in forensic clients and
program evaluation. However, the clinical issues,
presenting problems, and treatment approaches are
applicable to any clinician’s practice.

Child and Youth Services is an outpatient facility for
children and families. Services are offered to children,
youth, and their families encountering a broad range of
emotional, intellectual, and behavioral problems such as
sexual abuse, attention-deficit disorder, and legal offenses.
Services are organized around four community-based,
multidisciplinary, family focused programs: Early
Childhood, Mid-Childhood, Youth, and Young Offenders.
Interns gain experience in one or two of the programs in
individual, family, and group interventions. Some
coursework and experience in child development and
assessment is a prerequisite for this rotation. Core
experiences include: court-ordered, pre-sentence
psychological assessment (cognitive, personality, risk,
needs, case planning), special referrals (e.g., query F.A.S.)
involve multi-disciplinary, coordinated evaluations,
suicide/risk/violence assessment (mainly for custodial
facilities), anger management, sex offender treatment,
