Stocking the Kitchen – Gastric Bypass/Sleeve Gastrectomy In the first days after surgery, your nutrition priorities are: 1. Stay hydrated – sip, sip, sip on plenty of fluids. o Choose sugar-free, bubble-free, alcohol free liquids (see next page) o Drink 64 oz/day That’s 4 oz/hour or 1 oz (shot glass) every 15 min Use a timer, cell phone alarm or friend to keep you on track 2. Take your vitamins o Take 2 chewable multivitamins – one in the morning and one at night Such as Flintstones Complete or Centrum Chewable No men’s formula, senior’s formula or gummies o Take 500 mcg of liquid or sublingual vitamin B12 o Check out the ART outpatient pharmacy for vitamins we recommend 3. If you feel like eating, take bites of pureed, protein-rich foods. o You are on the pureed diet for 30 days o Protein rich foods include pureed meat, beans, low fat cheese, cottage cheese and yogurt (see next page) o Eat for the experience, not the nutrition at this point o It may take you several days or weeks to work up to 60 grams of protein per day. o For more variety, you can take bites of pureed vegetables and fruits but don’t live off of starches and fats. 4. You will need to take calcium + D every day for life but we will wait at least one month to add this. TO PUREE FOODS 1. Cook the food using a moist method, such as boiling or stewing. 2. Cut the food into very small pieces about the size of a frozen pea. 3. Place the food in a blender. 4. Add water or broth to cover the blades inside the blender. 5. Blend the food and liquid together until it is smooth like baby food. 6. Push the food through a strainer if there are lumps, seeds or large pieces of food. 7. Use spices to flavor the food. Pureed meats (cooked, then blended with broth or water- try adding to 4-8 oz of broth) o Strained, plain baby food meats (use any seasonings except sugar to flavor) Melted low-fat or fat-free cheese o o Try Fage, Oikos, Yoplait, Dannon, or Chobani brands Dannon Light and Fit Greek yogurt comes flavored without added sugar Creamy, natural peanut butter (no added sugars) off the spoon or in a homemade shake Silken tofu o Dannon Light and Fit, Activia Light, Light n’ Fit Carb Control, Low Fat Plain Stonyfield Farms plain or light, Blue Bunny Light no sugar added, Breyer’s Light Nonfat (0%) Plain Greek Yogurt (most have 2-3 times the protein of regular yogurt) o o Add some blended fruit or unsweetened applesauce Flavor with lemon or almond extract and artificial sweetener Add tomato sauce and heat until gooey in the microwave Fat-free, No Added Sugar Yogurts o Blend chunky soups in the blender and try adding some pureed meats while blending Low-fat or Nonfat Cottage Cheese or Low-fat or Fat-Free Ricotta cheese o o o Melt some low-fat cheese and add hot sauce Stir in your blended meat Soups (low-fat veggie, bean, lentil, or meat-based soups without noodles/rice) o Shredded low-fat or fat-free mozzarella or cheddar mixed into blended meats or on top of mashed beans Try soft cheese like Laughing Cow Light or Friendship Farmer Cheese Beans! Fat-Free Refried beans (from the grocery store) or mashed limas, pintos, black beans or black-eyed peas or homemade hummus (blended chickpeas) o o lean/skinless turkey, chicken, beef, fish, tuna, veal, venison Add to make broth-based soups creamy, or to give smoothies a thicker texture Egg, egg substitute, or egg whites pureed (eggs are best as a transition food) Oatmeal (made with milk, or nonfat dried milk powder) Jell-O sugar-free pudding (made with your own skim milk) Purees Video Online Review the food groups and how to puree foods plus brand‐specific foods and quick and easy recipe!
