About the Workshop
Many deeply rooted emotional issues are tightly woven into individual, couple, and family
perception and functioning, presenting significant challenges to therapists. This workshop will
first provide a presentation of two important theories, Bowen’s family systems theory and
attachment theory. Both have been playing an important role in assisting clinicians understand
the “behind scene” issues that are linked to their presenting issues. The presenter will explore
important emotional experiences within relational context and its effect on the development and
maintenance of relational dynamics. Clinical case examples will be provided to enhance
understanding and application of the theories. Secondly, the workshop will provide an
opportunity to participants to receive supervision/consultation from the perspective of the two
theories.
About the Trainer
Prof. Shi Lin 石琳 is full professor in the Marriage and Family Therapy Program at Northern
Illinois University, a COAMFTE (Commission on Accreditation in Marriage and Family Therapy
Education) in the U.S. She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), and an AAMFT
(American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Association) Approved Supervisor. As
the senior faculty member, she teaches core MFT courses, providing live and videotaped
supervision, conducting clinical research, and providing supervision toward the AAMFT
Approved Supervisor status. In addition, she conducts therapy in a private practice setting
where she concentrates on couples and trauma therapy.
Prof. Shi’ has conducted workshops, teaching, and clinical training in the US, Norway, Kosovo,
Hong Kong, and mainland China.
