“Evidence Based, Best in Class”

FACT SHEET
“Evidence Based, Best in Class”
The POWERWAND® is an all-in-one safety introducer delivering a 3.1” or 3.9” power-injectable, extended-dwell catheter (up to 29
days) inserted by means of the Accelerated Seldinger Technique (AST). The POWERWAND is the first and only peripheral
midline IV capable of reliably delivering continuous IV therapy for the entire length of stay. And the POWERWAND offers patients
the potential of a ONE STICK hospitalization: labs are drawn, medications administered – ALL through the POWERWAND.
FEATURES
BENEFITS
• Needle: MicroAccess 21 gauge, echogenic needle for the 5Fr
POWERWAND, NanoPunctureTM 22 gauge, echogenic needle for
the 4Fr POWERWAND.
• Dilator: Nylon, Zero-Edge™ transition, protects against catheter shearing.
• Guidewire: Full length-of-catheter Nitinol, soft tip guidewire for atraumatic insertion.
• Securement: Mechanical IV Stabilization Device (included).
• Catheter: ChronoFlex® C, radiopaque, 4Fr and 5Fr extended-dwell (3.1 inch/8.0cm and 3.9 inch/10.0cm).
• Infection Control: The POWERWAND has the lowest published BSI rate of all in-patient VADs.1
• Insertion Method: Ultrasound guided or direct visualization, AST is safer, simpler and faster.
• Power-Injectable: 300 psi/5cc per second.
• Extended Dwell: Technically a ‘midline,’ The POWERWAND may be left in for up to 29 days longer according to CDC guidelines.
• Large bore: The 5Fr POWERWAND catheter is capable of delivering large volumes rapidly. (160ml/min - gravity). The 4Fr
POWERWAND is capable of delivering (130ml/min - gravity).
• AST: As one nurse put it: “The Accelerated Seldinger Technique turns hard sticks into easy sticks.”
INTENDED USE
The POWERWAND extended dwell catheter is intended for
intravenous placement in the upper arm, preferably a mid-biceps
insertion site, and tip location distal to the axillary vein. If used in
other locations, clinicians are advised to consult the INS Standards for
site selection.
ADVANTAGES OVER PERIPHERAL IVs
PIVs cannot reliably deliver continuous IV therapy for the full length of
stay, or offer the possibility of a ONE STICK hospitalization. The average PIV dwell time is 44 hours, with only a 47% completion of therapy
and a 58% patient dissatisfaction rate.
POWERWAND REIMBURSEMENT
When placed using ultrasound and placed in the upper arm, The
POWERWAND is billable under the same codes currently used for
PICC placement and dynamic ultrasound.
ADVANTAGES OVER PICCS
The POWERWAND is not a central line and, therefore, poses no
CLABSI risk; further it does not require radiographic (or other
methods of) tip location. Since The POWERWAND tip is NOT IN
THE SVC, the danger of SVC Syndrome is mitigated. Inadvertent
placement of PICCs into the heart or neck veins is also obviated
with The POWERWAND. PICCs have an important place (see INS
Standards); they also have real risks. The POWERWAND offers
clinicians a new First Option for IV Therapy.
POTENTIAL POWERWAND PATIENTS
• All “hard sticks” patients.
• Any patient requiring >44 hours of continual IV therapy.
• All patients with CVCs – Doctors remove CVCs sooner with a POWERWAND in place.
• Most surgical patients.
• All ED admits and ICU patients.
