EXTREME STEAM HEADING TO NORTH AUGUSTA MIDDLE
NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. – North Augusta Middle School will host Extreme STEAM Day on
Thursday, May 28 from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. With more than 20 presentations by
CSRA private and public industry, students from sixth through eighth grades will
experience real-world hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math
(STEAM) in mini-classes showcasing everyday applications in a variety of fields.
STEAM is a national initiative in education driven by the business and industry
community. Extreme STEAM will feature Ft. Gordon’s Cyber Command’s satellite
communications overview as well as The Greenwood Genetic Center’s Gene Machine
Mobile Science Laboratory, a 41-foot custom coach outfitted as a mobile science
laboratory providing opportunities for students to learn about genetic traits and
disorders and experience first-hand genetic lab modules. STEAM Partner Augusta Tech
will showcase Golf Course Management and the science of successful putting. The
National Wild Turkey Federation will examine the geometry of archery, and
Communigraphics will demonstrate the technical design of screen printing. Artist Eddie
Walker will sculpt ice and Smallcakes will teach cake decorating arts. Other
presentations include Audiology, CPR, Lapdogs pet grooming van, the North Augusta
High School Championship Robotics Team, and more.
Each grade will be divided into small groups to rotate through the various presentations.
Students will be given graphic organizers to make notes and observations during the
activities and presentations. The day will conclude with debriefing sessions where
students will discuss their findings and write about their experiences.
“We wanted every student to be able to attend this event, so we decided to hold this
during school hours,” noted Principal Phyllis Gamble. “NAMS Extreme STEAM event is the
kick-off to our STEAM initiative and our goal to become a nationally-recognized STEAM
school.”
