Immigration Law and Policy Since 1990
Why Studying a Foreign Language Will Make You a
Wealthier Person
This talk reviews American immigration law since 1990, as well as the migration
trends that have been shaped by these policies. We will examine the politics of
immigration reform, some of its unintended consequences and then explore the
underlying reasons for why these rules remain so vexing and contentious.
Dr. John Park, Chair and Professor, Asian American Studies
G Theater and Dance 1701 (map E-2): 12 noon
This talk focuses on ways in which learning a foreign language—especially
as part of a major—will make students “wealthier” people. The functional
knowledge of a foreign language can increase graduates’ income and give
them access to more jobs, but the in-depth study of a foreign language provides
access to cognitive, cultural, emotional and social resources, which are equally
important aspects of “wealth.” Dr. Viola Miglio, Assistant Professor, Spanish &
Portuguese

Conspiracy Theories
Conspiracy theories and conspiratorial thinking are woefully common. But what
causes false conspiracies to form, spread and lodge themselves in the public
consciousness? In this lecture Dr. Reid considers precipitating social conditions,
individual and group differences in subscription to conspiracies and the
psychological mechanisms that underpin their appeal. Dr. Scott Reid, Associate
Professor, Communication

Fruit Fly Hairs and Bacterial Death Spikes:
An Adventure in Interdisciplinary Research
Academic freedom and interdisciplinary research are key components in

the causative agents of plague, melioidosis and food poisoning. Dr. Stephen

Oh My God! Why California Teenagers Are the Future of
English (and Why That’s Like Totally Hella Awesome)
Young people, and especially young people from California, have often been
accused of “inarticulateness,” “sloppy speech,” even “destroying the English
language.” This interactive presentation will challenge these myths and explore
the realities of California teenagers’ linguistic innovations, from “dude” to uptalk.
We’ll also examine the impact of these developments on English across the nation
and around the world. Dr. Mary Bucholtz, Professor, Linguistics
G Life Sciences Bldg. (LSB) 1001 (map E-5): 1 p.m.
Two-Faced Impressions: Woodcuts and Ballads from the
Renaissance to Today
Early woodblocks, often featuring stock figures, were altered, copied and reused
in England for hundreds of years. Few early blocks have survived to tell us their
story of use and reuse. But the few survivals, and the many extant broadside
ballads on which they were printed, suggest multi-faceted meanings behind
the lasting popularity of cheap print from the Renaissance to today. Dr. Patricia
Fumerton, Professor, English

Arts Leadership and Community Development in Isla Vista
This talk will discuss ways to improve the stability of today’s financial market and
explain how Brownian motion and other mathematical tools are used in today’s
financial systems. Dr. Jean-Pierre Fouque, Professor, Statistics & Applied Probability
and Director, Center for Research in Financial Mathematics and Statistics
G Life Sciences Bldg. (LSB) 1001 (map E-5): 11 a.m.
The unincorporated town of Isla Vista, like many college communities across
the U.S., struggles for a meaningful presence as neighbor to one of the largest
public universities in California. After half a century of growth and unregulated
development, the case-study of Isla Vista presents a unique and challenging set of
conditions. In the aftermath of tragedy, UCSB Art Department faculty and students
from the “IV OpenLab” demonstrate their creative leadership in shaping a positive
vision for the future of Isla Vista. Kim Yasuda, M.F.A., Professor, Art Studio

Darkening Mirrors: Representation and the Imagination
of Power
Business & Entrepreneurial Education at UCSB: Enhancing
Career Opportunities for All Majors
Imperial representations are images through which national power has been
imagined and extended in the west. Familiar imperial representations include
expansion and frontierism, but there are others. Theater and film from the
Depression era indicate the ways African American cultural producers engaged
representations that most often denigrated and excluded them as a means
to express inclusion, criticism and extension of national identity and national
power. Dr. Stephanie Batiste, Associate Professor, Black Studies & English
G Theater and Dance 1701 (map E-2): 11 a.m.
The Technology Management Program at UCSB is a unique education program
open to all majors, providing coursework and co-curricular activities in business,
entrepreneurship and professional development. TMP’s mission is to add value
to all our campus degree objectives, opening doors and helping students succeed
in non-academic careers following graduation. Dr. York will discuss the program
and the important role of higher education in training the next generation of
business leaders and fostering new innovations that benefit society, drawing on
examples and experiences at UC Santa Barbara. Dr. Bob York, Professor, Electrical &
Computer Engineering (ECE) and Chair, Technology Management Program (TMP)
