Lifelong Learning for Adults 55+
Minnesota’s state motto, “L’Etoile du Nord,”
reminds us that from the French explorers and fur
traders of the 18th century and the influx of FrenchCanadian farmers in the 19th century to a continuing
stream of French speaking immigrants, the French
have left an indelible mark on Minnesota society and
culture. This program, developed by members of
the French-American Heritage Foundation, focuses

Adventures in Learning
Native Bees
If you are over 55 and like to sing, you are
invited to join this chorus. Their repertoire
includes music from the ’30s and ’40s,
patriotic music, show tunes, spirituals,
dance numbers and vaudeville-style skits.
New members are always welcome. This
activity is made possible, in part, by the
Minnesota Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund.

Poetry: Classics in English
This session, with English Professor Lawrence Moe,
is devoted to famous verse in English, the “greatest
hits” including masterworks by Shakespeare, Blake,
Keats, Dickinson and others. Attention is given to
what makes a poem a classic, but the emphasis is
on joyful appreciation.

Culture, Music & Cuisine
A former Spanish colony, our neighbor south of the
border is an ancient civilization with unique pyramids
and beautiful sculptures, fabulous cathedrals, strong
Roman Catholic traditions, beautiful beaches and
rich natural resources. Much land was lost to the U.S.
in the 19th century. Irene Khin Khin Jensen, Professor
Emerita of Asian Studies, visited Mexico to meet with
educators, church leaders, teachers, and others. She
will share with you what they shared with her.

St. Anthony Falls, the
Birthplace of Minneapolis
Did you know that the birthplace of Minneapolis
was not Minneapolis? The point of origin was across
the river from downtown, in the older city called St.
Anthony. In this illustrated presentation about the
town of St. Anthony and St. Anthony Falls, presenter
Kristin Anderson will consider the history of the
waterfall and its importance as the economic driver
of the communities that became Minneapolis.

The Ebony Fashion Fair:
Inspiring Beauty & Fashion
The Ebony Fashion Fair, a world-renowned traveling
fashion show with works from fashion icons, became
a vehicle for African American empowerment, pride,
and achievement. Exhibit developer, Joy Bivins, will
share her expertise about the history and legacy
of Eunice Johnson and the Fashion Fair. Bivens will
be joined by Robyn Robinson, who will share her
personal experiences of attending the Fashion Fair
as a young woman in Chicago and discuss how the
shows influenced her and her friends.

Travelogue: Ottawa & Quebec
In her recent travels from Minneapolis to Maine,
Ruth Aaskov took the northern route via Sault
Ste. Marie, winding along the shores of Lake Huron to the Thousand Islands through Ontario and
Quebec. She missed the arrival of Queen Elizabeth
at the Parliament in Ottawa, but saw the preparations for her visit. Her journey continued for a 2-day
stay in French Quebec City before returning to the
U.S. via the Maine border. Register online or by

Travelogue: Red Rocks of Sedona
Come travel with us to Sedona, Arizona and more
specifically to the Red Rocks. The formations

by taking this class. After the initial 8-hour course,

Chore Services for Senior Adults
Minneapolis has nonprofit chore service programs
that serve adults, ages 60+. Their goal is to help you
remain in your own home by providing services such
as snow removal, lawn mowing, raking and other
yard work, simple minor repairs and house cleaning. They recruit both volunteers and paid workers
to provide services and clients pay an hourly rate
that is affordable to you. Contact the program that
serves your neighborhood for more information and

Are you looking for a comfortable, friendly place
to socialize, participate in enrichment classes and

Meals on Wheels Program Needs You
Community Emergency Service provides meals to
people who are unable to shop and prepare adequate
meals for themselves on a regular basis. If you or
someone you know would like to help and can volunteer to drive one day a month, please contact Melanie
LaPointe at 612.870.1125, ext. 128. Meal delivery takes
about an hour and the show of appreciation by clients
is priceless.

Active older adults will learn strengthening, cardiovascular, balance and flexibility components
to create a safe, effective workout to keep their
bodies and minds agile and strong throughout the
years. Exercises can be done sitting or standing. All

Vision loss can be one of the most traumatic experiences a person can face, yet, some simple strategies
and a few tools can make a big difference. State
Services for the Blind offers tools, technology and
training to help people live well with vision loss, all
at no cost to you. Outreach Coordinator Lisa Larges
will discuss causes of vision loss, strategies for doing
things non-visually, and she will demonstrate some
of the many products and devices now available. If
you have macular degeneration, glaucoma, or any
other vision issues, plan to attend this session. New
technologies have opened up a world of possibilities
for people who are blind, and we’ll take a look at
some of these as well.

The Telephone Equipment Distribution Program provides adaptive telephone equipment
to individuals who have a hearing loss, physical
or speech disability and have difficulty using a
standard telephone. With the equipment, you
can use your phone more easily. The program
provides a variety of telephone equipment
such as amplified phones, loud ringers, light
flashing signalers, caption telephones and
special need devices. It is provided on a longterm basis at no cost to qualified Minnesota
residents and is funded by a surcharge on all
telephone lines. It is administered through the
Department of Commerce.

Mill City Museum Visit & Lunch
Built into the ruins of what was once the world’s
largest flour mill, the Mill City Museum is located on
the historic Mississippi riverfront. Learn about the
intertwined histories of the flour industry, the river,
and the city of Minneapolis. Begin with an orientation to the museum, experience the Flour Tower,
a 30 seat multi-media elevator ride that travels
between eight floors, see Minneapolis in 19 Minutes
Flat, a film by Kevin Kling and enjoy rooftop views of
the Mississippi River, St. Anthony Falls and the Stone
Arch Bridge. A delicious boxed lunch, from D’Amico
Catering, includes your choice of turkey or Genoa
