The Shag Rag The Official Fish Wrapper of The Beach Shaggers of Birmingham Spring 2006 The Prez Says Let me begin by saying what an honor it is to hold this position in your Shag Club. We belong to a wonderful organization...wonderful in so many ways. Genuinely nice people (well – except for a few old grouches), a great dance in which one can spend the rest of their lives learning and perfecting, absolutely "to die for" music served up by some of the best DJ's in the land, and great parties, where all of these ingredients come together to produce what is commonly called, "a rip-roarin' good time". Such a deal" But alas, good times very seldom just spring forth. There is no magic genie or spontaneous combustion at work here. Effort is the word that comes to mind. To paraphrase Webster's, effort is to make an earnest attempt at something. Now-where were you last Tuesday night ?? Hmnim...was it too cold? Was it too wet? Was...it...too...DARK!? Or was the latest episode of 'American Idol' so spellbinding you just couldn't force yourself to break away from the television? Now I fully understand that the "business of life' can sometimes get in the way of perfectly good intentions. Birthday parties for the grandchildren care for friends and family, commitments to other functions and organizations are all a part of that "life". But I would take this opportunity to urge you to make that "earnest attempt" on Tuesday nights to attend our weekly "get together", If something gets in the way this week, make it a point to attend the next week. It's important. It's important because a club's viability starts with participation. Without that, our club's attractiveness diminishes not only to potential new members and nightclubs like Spud's that continue to host us, but perhaps most importantly, to our own club members. Who wants to make the "effort" (there's that word again) to attend our Tuesday night dance only to find a "crowd" of 1012 fellow dancers? We need you to be there to fully enjoy and appreciate this great club, Enough sermonizing! Speaking of parties (isn't that what we do best?), the benefit party that was recently held for Glenn Walls was a rousing success in every way. Our members (as well as members from the Magic City Boppers) were very generous, as they always are at these affairs. Glenn says that the Dr.'s tell him he's cancer free and he is now in the process of building his strength and slowly easing into his work routine. We couldn't be happier for both Glenn and Fran. What - more parties??!! You betcha. Our traditional IRS Party will be held, appropriately enough, on April 15* this year, which is on a Saturday. So... all of you golfers need to schedule early tee times on that day, all of you gardeners need to have those petunias and impatiens in the ground and growing by 12:00 noon, and all of you sleepy heads who like to snooze late on Saturdays need to...get up! We're not asking for much, just your presence. The fan starts at 2:00 and lasts 'till 6:00. While I'm on the subject, I am compelled to mention that the annual SOS Spring Party in North Myrtle Beach begins on April 21 and ends on April 30. For those of you who have never attended, this is one of those "must see to believe" events. Everything you've ever heard about this party is true. The crowds, the music, the heat, the crowds, the good times, the great dancers, and...did I mention the crowds? Lotsa people. You'll get used to it. Go. But before you do, be sure to purchase an SOS card, which are being sold at our Tuesday night parties. On a final note, let me reiterate that this is your club, which is to say that we (Board Members) want to hear what your thoughts are about club activities as well as ideas you might have as to how to make it better. Till next time - Great Shaggin'! HANGIN’ OUT The Official Newsletter of Shag-A-Rama 2006 No. 1 THE Adult Party in the Deep South and Gulf Coast Johnny Shagginbop, Editor _________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________ Shag-A-Rama 2006 Plans Near Completion Plans for the biggest and best Shag-A-Rama ever are nearing completion. You will not want to miss it! Returning this year for more fabulous, free workshops are Annette Johnson and Dwight Langley from the Raleigh, N.C. area. They cultivated the best response to our workshops we have ever had last year. The attendance, not to mention the fun everyone had, was unbelievable. Dwight and Annette, National Living Legends of Dance, are enormously popular instructors at the Hilton Head and Florence S.C. parties, as well as others. More important than all that, they are down home friendly and they can out-party anyone. The case of beer offered last October to anyone who partied harder went unclaimed. Returning to the guest deejay booth again will be Billy Waldrep of Roebuck, S.C. Billy is the “Beer for My Horses” guy. He is a Hall of Fame Shagger. Billy has a huge following all across the Southeast. Joining Billy this year will be Ted Whitlock of Concord, N.C. Ted played at Shag-A-Rama 2004. He also played at the Beach Shaggers of Birmingham New Year’s Eve party this past December and blew our weejuns off. Our club is honored and thrilled to have both of these spin-masters back. Add to them the best club deejays found anywhere and you have a recipe for four days of some might fine dancing. How You Can Help This year let us resolve to have 100 percent attendance by our club membership. So plan ahead ask for vacation time now and start "saving those pennies". If you travel to another club party, take some party flyers with you to hand out. Volunteer to help at the party -- it's fun!!. To do so just call or email John Harper. [email protected] or 879-1531. Keeping in Touch This year we are making a strong effort to keep in touch with prior attendees through "Hangin' Out", our internet newsletter. We will be sending it to the attendees by email. What you are reading now is a variation of what was already sent last month. "Thank you!" Vicki Fallon for your work in creating a database and group address and sending the first addition to our former guests. As a result we already have a number of reservations, which we had never had before at this early date. We Like your Input Our club is always looking for ways to improve the party. Your suggestions are most welcome. Email any suggestions you may have to John Harper, Vice-Chairman of the party, at [email protected] or call him at 879-1531. This year we are considering some Wednesday afternoon activities for the very early arrivers. So if that interests you and if you have suggestions for what the activity might be, just “holler”. A beach party in the suds and sand has been suggested. Hotel News Hotel rates for 2006 will be the same as last year. For 2007 and 2008, they will likely be higher as the hotel is planning major renovations in keeping with the other upscale developments going on around the Boardwalk. A limited number of condos will again be available this year. Miss Newby’s Through our intense negotiations with Miss Newby’s “Hunch Punch” Liquor Store, they have agreed to allow certain SAR attendees back on the premises, following last year’s “performance,” shall we say. We could only obtain this agreement by promising that these persons would give Victoria S., the bar maid, reasonable tips. In line with what the more dignified patrons tipped last year, $15 per drink would not be considered unreasonable. BEACHSHAGGERS OF BIRMINGHAM’S ANNUAL THROWDOWN JUNE 24, 2006 1:00 P.M. - 6:00 P.M. When unfamiliar faces appear on Tuesday nights be sure to greet them with a smile and a word of welcome. It is also a “good thing” to speak to the regular members too. Guys - there are a lot of single women that would like to dance (but are not like me) and sit waiting for one of the male dancers to ask her to dance, so please put forth some effort to ensure that all the ladies get to dance and keep coming.
