The school empowers students to develop skills and character as they explore their talents and interests in order to become informed citizens and leaders in the global community. 2012-2013 Faculty Accomplishments Swim Team donated $1,425 to the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America from their swim-a-thon. AP Achievement District Honor Roll Courtney Rohrig participated in Adopt-a-Survivor Program. Courtney met several times with a Holocaust survivor, recorded the story, and promises to pass his/her story onto future generations Our district was selected to be a part of the 3rd Annual Advanced Placement Program’s AP Achievement District Honor Roll for Significant Gains in Advanced Placement Access and Student Performance. Marc Babich One of his Holocaust and Genocide students participated in the Adopt-aSurvivor Program. The student met several times with a Holocaust survivor, recorded the story, and promises to pass his/her story on to future generations. Marisol Ciccone Magic 98.3 Radio Station “Teacher Who Makes Magic” inside her classroom winner. Marisol was nominated by two of her students and the principal. Julianne Erdi, Aubrey Thomas, and Catherine Gottfried and Felica Zikria came in 2nd place in Six Flags Great Adventure’s Marketing Challenge. The students placed 2nd out of over 50 entries. Marissa Modi volunteered at the South Brunswick Food Pantry for over a year , having organized several food drives. Simone Klein was selected to serve as one of the two student delegates from New Jersey at the 51st Annual United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP). Mark Kraft Band Director at SBHS for thirty-three years is a quarter-finalist in the GRAM MY Music Educator category. This represents the top 217 candidates from a field of over 30,000. We are awaiting word of his continuing progress with this award. Catherine LaMoreaux Contributed to the Senior Center’s National Award for the program Living Legacies. What parents and alumni said about our faculty members… “This teacher has worked tirelessly to make sure that her students know how to write, how to back up an argument with facts, and how to analyze text. I’ve seen my child’s writing grow this year tremendously and I’m not at all concerned about her ability to do well in sophomore year, thanks to this teacher.” Donna Sichta and John Marron Co-chaired the South Brunswick Diabetes Parent Support Group that met monthly throughout the school year. All parents of school-aged children with Type I Diabetes are welcome to join the group and share experiences as parents of children with diabetes. Guest Speakers for the group have come from the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and St. Peter’s University Hospital. Diabetes dog Lucky made a special appearance to the group for its final family group meeting! “This teacher seems to teach in such a way that it makes it easier for students to learn. I don’t know what she does, but her methods of teaching work even on the toughest kids.” Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts Staff members volunteered to assist with Hurricane Sandy Relief efforts at the Jersey Shore including Union Beach and the Highlands. “Now more than ever, we are grateful to the educators and staff who inspire and nurture our kids to become their best in life. You are truly the heroes, on the front line, protecting them and guiding them in an ever –changing society. “There is no surprise why my daughter loves being in your class! Thank you for being a true testimony to the positive impact educators can have on students if they choose to...thank you for choosing to do so!” Individual Student Recognition Academic Achievement Marketing students Julianne Erdi, Aubrey Thomas and Catherine Gottfried from Christina Santowasso’s Marketing class and Felica Zikria from Peri Sokol’s Fashion Marketing class came in second place in the Six Flags Great Adventure Marketing Challenge. AP Exams 88% of Advanced Placement students earned scores of three or higher on Advanced Placement tests in 2012. 1,258 exams were administered this May to 593 students. 19 art students were selected to show in the Rush Holt Congressional Art Show. David Landy won outstanding soloist at the Gala Concert at Rutgers University. We placed 1st and 2nd in Drawing, (Jody Friedman and Katie Ronquillo), 3rd in Painting (Rosie Waniak), 1st in Collage (Rachel Galang), and 1st in Computer Art (Emily Charniga). South Brunswick took 1st Overall (Jody Friedman), and her work will hang for a year in the US Capital building. We also took 2nd and 3rd Overall, Rachel Galang and Katie Ronquillo, whose work will hang in his Congressional offices. Rush Holt made a personal visit to SBHS to congratulate us! Governor’s School Three students were selected to attend his/her school of interest. 24 “Pathways to Business” students earned certification through passing the A*S*K Institute Fundamental Business Concepts exam. Our passing rate improved to 88.9%. Between the two years of offering this certification assessment, we've had 41 students take the test, and 32 earn certification (78% passing rate). Two of the students (Senior George Janovsky and Junior Preema Patel) were recognized with Exemplary Achievement, having received scores of 90% or higher on the certification exam. Nine (9) students participated in testing using the NOCTI Accounting - Basic assessment. This assessment, offered for the first time here at SBHS, includes a 3-hour written test and a 3-hour performance test. Of the nine participants, one student achieved a passing score on the written portion and two students earned passing scores on the performance test. Sophomore Evan Wu qualified for the USA Junior Math Olympiad examination (that lasted over 9 hours over 2 days). His score on the exam ranks him among the top 80 contestants in the U.S. Senior Davis Liu and junior Manvith Narahari were named U.S. Physics semi-finalists, two of about 400 students in the country. Manvith was a bronze medalist, placing him in the top half of the semi-finalists. We also hosted a forum on the local response to Superstorm Sandy and to terrorism. Volleyball Danielle Padovano Community Service All Red Division, GMC Champion, 3rd Singles GMC Tournament Finalists 1st Doubles/ All Area Home News Packages for the Troops Ms. Sanyigo’s Vietnam Era classes collected personal care items for the troops in November. The classes packed about 150 shoeboxes that were sent to SBHS graduate Zach Melchisky who is currently serving in Afghanistan. The Military History classes also helped in collecting items. Various English and Social Studies classes wrote letters to the troops. The Kids, Kids, Kids program provided arts and crafts for the goodie bags sent in each box. G.I. Go Jeans for Troops Day The staff wore jeans to support Jeans for Troops Day and collected $115. Chris Molnar Fundraiser Staff and students raised over $2,000 to help with the medical bills of alumni Chris Molnar. She’s the First Student volunteers raised $2,000 through bake sales to support the education of three high school girls in Guatemala for an entire year. Dr. Kathleen Murphy organized this event. Stop &Shop A+ School Rewards Program $575.42 was given to the school from Stop & Shop’s A+ Rewards Program. Over 200 students and 30 staff members participated in this annual event. The Junior Class proved to be victorious as they defeated the Senior Class in many, many overtimes. All proceeds were donated to: ◊ Women Aware ◊ Wounded Warrior Project ◊ NJASC State Charity: Hugs-For-Brady Leadership Association was an organization started to bring together leaders from several branches of the school (Class Presidents, Drum Majors, Club Presidents and Team Captains). This group met once a month to discuss school wide issues and promote each others events. Members of the Student Council attended 2 NJASC Statewide Leadership Conferences where officers networked with students from around the state to discuss leadership programs and school spirit. SBHS Student Council Officers hosted 4 workshops at the NJASC Winter Conference South Brunswick Student Council was recognized as an Honor School for the ninth year in a row by NJASC. This year’s Student Council decided to start a new tradition with a Dance-AThon sponsoring our NJASC charity Hugs-For-Brady. This brand new event earned a $1000 donation to the cause and all participants had a great time. The annual Mr. SBHS pageant was hosted on April 19th 2013. The highly anticipated event generated a large crowd which made the event a success. Students, staff and parents alike came to support this event, and the contestants put on an amazing show. David Landy stole the hearts of the crowd, and ended up winning the title. Staff and students dressed up for Black and Gold Days, Class Color Days, College Day, Mismatch Day, Lazy Day and many more. School spirit was showcased throughout these weeks with participants being recognized and awarded the Spirit Cup. A bonfire was also scheduled to occur on October 11th 2012. Student Council coordinated with Activities Director, Class Officers and Athletics. This year had an even better attendance than last year, and included a DJ and various snacks for sale. Homecoming Float Parade on October 12th: Our theme was “SBHS Travels the World” and that is exactly what we did. All 4 Classes, Student Council and the Dead Presidents Society showcased floats to represent different countries. 14 seniors were members of the court, with Jimmy Quilter being crowned King and Patricia Walsh being crowned Queen. Yearbook Club Advisor - Anna Lehre • The 2013 Yearbook was once again selected by Balfour Publishing to use as an over-run yearbook which will be used as a model book by sales representatives at prospective schools. • 2012 Yearbook Awards: ◊ National Scholastic Press Association – First Class Rating (second highest award available) with two marks of distinction for Concepts/ Essentials and Design ◊ Garden State Scholastic Press Association – All New Jersey Platinum Award (second highest award available) All Conference Boys’ Volleyball Brandon Mariano Viking Closet (continued) beauty services. • Awarded the Education Foundation Grant: $1,000.00 in 2013 • Donated 15 bags of clothing to Carteret High School • Donated approximately 300 Prom dresses to New Brunswick High School. 2nd Place GMC Championships W.I.S.H. – Working in Senior Housing Advisors – Meryl Orlando and Ann Jahr • Club created in response to students’ requests following a character initiative last year • 19 club members participated • 50 visits to four different assisted living and skilled nursing facilities (Franklin Care in Franklin Park, Genesis Park Place in Monmouth Junction, Acorn Glen in Princeton and Stonebridge at Montgomery in Skillman) made by club members on weekends and after school. • Student members planned activities to engage the residents including Scrabble using student-made Scrabble boards and guessing games like Pictionary, What’s My line, and Password and socialized with the residents in these facilities. • Two guest speakers invited to educate club members at club meetings about their careers and working with the aged: LeAndra Smith, recreation director of Stonebridge at Montgomery and Roberta Scharff, Director of the Rehabilitation Center. Science League Advisor - Jane Rothfuss • 52 students currently enrolled in Science Department classes participated in Science League tests in 2013. As of May 5, 2013, the final scores and place ment of teams and individuals has not yet been released by the New Jersey Science League organization. Sketch-Up Club Advisors - Catherine LaMoreaux and Marc Lifland • Performed at “Skwish” three times this year along with the WISH club. This event is an improv performance at Genesis Park Place, a local nursing home. • Held Annual Wing-It Event and raised $300 for Broadway Cares Equity Fights AIDS. The winner of this event was invited to perform with a professional improvisational troupe. • Participated in improvisational games with a Harry Potter theme with the Dumbledore Army club. Special Olympics Advisor - Kathleen Kirby • Family BBQ - Coaches, athletes, volunteers, and their families gathered for a BBQ to mark the end of track practice. Awards and t-shirts were given out to athletes and volunteers. • Area 5 Track Meet - Athletes each competed in three track and field events. • Summer Game - Six athletes will spend the weekend at TCNJ competing in the Track and Field portion of the Special Olympics Summer Games. Technology Student Association (TSA) Advisors - Lisa Sokol and Peri Sokol • Attended the TSA State Competition at TCNJ and came home with the following: ◊ Fashion Design - 3rd place ◊ Architecture - 1st place in the state Viking Closet Advisors - Jennifer Webb and Mary Francis Ryan-Howley, Brianna Logan and Karen Lopez • Back to School Event - 8/23/12 - 70 attendees - 40 students and some people from the community received back to school supplies, clothing, and accessories. More than 30 volunteers helped out with this event. • Free Raffle - 12/6/12 - 400 volunteers and participants. 16 prizes were raffled off. Anyone could enter the raffle for free. Items raffled included Coach bags, Vera Bradley bags, Tiffany jewelry, Viking Wear and much more. Prom Dress Drive - 4/4/13 - 75 volunteers, 87 recipients of dresses - Prom Dress drive began in January and continued through until March 22nd. Red Cross Club Advisor - Holly Studzinski • Hosted a Blood Drive on May 21st and May 22nd and collected a total of 133 pints of blood product! Together, our SBHS community saved 399 lives!! • We would like to recognize Nikhil Gandhi and Kedar Venkataramani (Class of 2013) Badminton Club presidents, as well as the entire Badminton Club for hosting a successful Badminton Tournament in November to raise funds for the American Red Cross Hurricane Sandy Relief. A total of $387.20 was raised and contributed to the American Red Cross. Renaissance Advisor - Dr. Roberto DeBari • Held annual Quidditch Night with 250 in attendance. Event raised $1,000 for the Annual Paraprofessional/Custodial Luncheon which was held on May 23rd. Robotics Team Advisors - T.J. Fawcett and Michael Snook • Won an Excellence Award at the State level competition and qualified for the World Championship in Anaheim, California. A total of 16 students and two advisors competed against 420 teams from across the world and reached the semi-finals. This was an excellent showing for a rookie team. sbEarth - Environmental Club Advisor - Jane Rothfuss • Recycled 100 lbs of plastic caps through a program sponsored by Aveeda • Held a bake sale and contributed $250 to International Fund for Animal Welfare, in support of its elephant conservation education program • Made recycled paper to better understand the recycling process • Special Meeting -- Mrs. Nancy Paquette, South Brunswick Recycling Coordinator and another representative from South Brunswick township Public Works came to discuss the township's single-stream recycling program • Special Event - sbEarth Coffee House to benefit Chimp Haven on April 26, 2013. Over 135 people attended and the event raised $500 for Chimp Haven. Newspaper Viking Vibe (continued) • We have deployed the android version but we were set back by technology issues. The apple version is complete but needs additional fine-tuning which we plan to complete next year. • We are exploring cost-effective ways to bring at least a limited print version back next year through a partnership with the South Brunswick Post. • We assumed Vibe Culture as a part of our normal operations. • We founded an online literary magazine called Vibe Expressions as part of the newspaper. • We partnered with She’s the First to bring an official chapter here to SBHS. • We also ran our third Ultimate Frisbee tourney in conjunction with the Ultimate Frisbee Club. • Our students won several awards from the GSSPA scholastic press conference in October. Accompanied by the New England Symphonic Ensemble they performed the Mozart “Requiem” and received a standing ovation. • The choir also served the community at numerous events throughout the year. The South Brunswick Wind Ensemble • Received a GOLD Rating at the New Jersey State Concert Band Festival and an invitation to the NJ State Gala Concert. • Symphonic Band and both Concert Bands received Silver ratings. • South Brunswick Wind Ensemble is one of six high school ensembles invited to perform at Rutgers University. The group was selected from over 200 applicants. The South Brunswick High School Orchestra • Played in concert with The College of New Jersey Orchestra performing “William Tell Overture.” • The Chamber Orchestra also travelled and performed in Baltimore, Maryland and Washington, DC. The South Brunswick Viking Marching Band • Performed their 2013 show “Velocity” winning several local contests including the Mayor’s Trophies for Best Overall Band at the Monroe High School Competition and the East Brunswick Competition. • They placed 2nd in the New Jersey State Championships and 2nd in the US Bands National Championships held at MetLife Stadium. The South Brunswick Visual Ensemble • SB Visual Ensemble completed an undefeated local season and won the Gold Medal in Scholastic Open Division of the Mid-Atlantic Indoor Network Championships. • The Performance Company won Gold in Scholastic Novice. • The Visual Ensemble’s 2013 production entitled “Fragile” is set to “How Fragile We Are”, as sung by Sting, earned 8th Place at the International Championships. The show taught strength in a world where life is fragile. The South Brunswick Indoor Percussion Ensemble • Completed their first year in competition. • The ensemble participated in 5 competitions throughout the winter receiving a promotion from Marching Percussion A to Marching Percussion AA on their first competition at Pequannock High School. Thanks to the excellence of the Science Department and the hard work of the students, the teams won trophies by placing 2nd and 3rd out of the 20 that competed in the high school division. They also won 38 medals in total. Students on the teams were recommended for inclusion in the teams by many of you. • Participated in the State Tournament which was held on March 12 where participation is limited to one team of 22 students that competed in 24 events. Students intensified their efforts to do well. The Pirandello Players • Presented the Pat Cook comedy “Quirk of Fate” in January with rave reviews. • In February, the children’s musical “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown” was presented by the Musical Theatre Class to over 1500 South Brunswick Elementary students! • In May audiences were wowed by a tremendous production of the Cole Porter Musical “Anything Goes!” The SBHS Small Ensembles (including the Men’s Vocal Ensemble, Women’s Vocal Ensemble, Clarinet Choir, Flute Choir, Brass Ensemble, Woodwind Quintets, Sax Ensemble, String Quartets, and Percussion Ensemble) • The Small Ensembles have performed for the school community and the general community in a Small Ensembles Concert that was held on March 21, 2013, as well as providing music events throughout the year. Some were also featured in the spring concerts and were scheduled to perform for both Crossroads Middle Schools. The Music Department • The Music Department presented six outstanding concerts at the High School, six full length concerts outside the building and performed for over 40 school and community events. • Forty students were inducted into the Tri-M National Music Honor Society. • The Music Department opened the school year at Convocation and closed the school year at graduation. • Congratulations to one and all! This year they were proud to have put on a very successful variety show highlighting the many talents of the members. The $6,000 raised was donated to The HELP Foundation, through which the club is sponsoring a child’s education in India all the way through college and The Alzheimer’s Foundation. • The club also sponsored a Movie Night raising an additional $200.
