AIAA-SD Newsletter May 2015 THE SAN DIEGO FLYER Message from the AIAA-SD Chair The San Diego Section has wrapped up the 2014/2015 calendar of events. Since September, we’ve brought you a series of events and networking activities! We still have one more event planned this summer. AIAA San Diego will have a booth at the 2016 AirShow San Diego. This event is held once a year, and it is a fabulous opportunity to see aircraft performers and static ground displays. This year the air show will commemorate the 70th Anniversary of America’s Triumph in WWII. If you are interested in helping AIAA San Diego during this event, please email us at [email protected]. You can also visit http://ag1caf.org for more event info. Fleet Scholarships to deserving students studying aerospace or aeronautical engineering. Since 1983, 176 students have received the scholarship. The Reuben H. Fleet Foundation at The San Diego Foundation makes the scholarship possible. The SDSU DBF team also presented the San Diego DBF trophy to the UCSD team, as UCSD placed higher in this year's Design Build Fly (DBF) competition. Design Build Fly (DBF) is an annual competition in which teams from universities around the world design and build remotely piloted aircraft. The teams come together each year to compete at the national DBF fly-off. Want to know more about AIAA-SD? PLEASE VISIT OUR WEBSITE OR FACEBOOK, OR CONTACT US AT: MAIL: P.O. AIAA-SD was honored to have Col. (RET) Richard Graham speak on his experience as an SR-71 pilot. Col. Graham gave an insightful and thoughtprovoking look at the SR-71 program, from the early development of the A-12 to the operational successes during the height of the Cold War. AIAA-SD would like to thank Col. Graham and all of our attendees for making this such a highly attended event! AIAA-SD recognized six AIAA members for their Long-Term Membership anniversaries. Each of the recognized members then all participated in a discussion panel. Image: Col. Richard Graham (USAF-Ret) Presents SR-71 Lecture, [Image Source: AIAA-SD] The following members were recognized: Dr. Alojzy A . Mikolajczak, Robert J . Buehler, Dr. Nagy S. Nosseir (San Diego State University Department of Aerospace Engineering), Dr. Rodney E. Stubbs (Lockheed Martin Corporation), Mr. Geoffrey S. Butler (General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc.), and Dr. Joe Bassi. The panel treated the audience to a taste of the experience and wisdom of AIAA members who have spent decades with the aerospace industry. They covered topics which are important today, while also sharing their own lessons from the past. Since there was a large number of students and young professionals in the audience, there was a strong focus on career paths, advancement, and staying current with new developments in the industry. Several AIAA-SD Council members helped to make this event possible. San Diego Section Chair, Cesar Martin, was moderator and AIAA National Conference Coordinator. Kevin Burns, produced the slideshow and arranged for the hosting venue. Program Arrangements Chair, Marcia Crawford, coordinated the food served at the event, which was prepared by Lolita’s Taco Shop in Kearny Mesa. The event was a great success, and we hope you can join us next year for the 2016 Aerospace Heritage Night!
