Competition Rules

All Structures must have a Design/Construction Theme
Competition schedule
7:30 AM – 8:00 AM Beach front opens for delivery of equipment & supplies to SandStruction sites.
No vehicles permitted on the beach before 7:30 AM or after 8:30 AM.
8:00 AM Clear the beach of all vehicles unloading equipment and supplies.
9:00 AM – 2:00 PM SandStruction competition build.
2:00 PM – 2:30PM SandStruction Judging.
2:30 PM Announcement of Winning Teams and Photographs of all Sand Structures.
3:00 PM End of Event.
(PLEASE DO NOT DESTROY YOUR SANDCASTLE OR SIGNAGE)

Site
1. Each team is provided a Site 16’ wide x 28’ deep.
2. Teams may not combine sites.
3. If they wish, teams made install a canopy or umbrella. Teams are responsible for obtaining and
installing any portable canopy or umbrella, no larger than 10’x 15’, at their site.
4. Teams may bring coolers with food and non-alcoholic beverages. Cooking of food and serving of
alcoholic beverages are not permitted.
5. Each team shall recycle plastic, aluminum, and cardboard within their own canopy and is responsible
for proper removal of all trash, equipment, formwork, etc. from the beach at the end of the event.

IV.
SandStruction Building Materials
1. Sculptures must be made of sand, water and shells and seaweed only. No other materials or additives
are allowed in the sculpture.
2. Teams may gather extra sand from the beach at the official start time.
3. Each Team is permitted to use formwork for building their sand sculptures provided they utilize sound
judgment and do not endanger participants or spectators.
a. Formwork can be placed within the plot before the start of the competition provided that NO
sand is moved within the plot for its setup.
b. Formwork, rebar, etc. may not be incorporated into the sand sculpture.
V.
SandCastle Building Equipment
1. Generators are not permitted.
2. Each team must provide its own water carrying tools, large plastic trash cans, buckets are suggested.
Wind, solar, tide, or human power is encouraged.
3. Water must be moved by human power.
4. Heavy earth moving equipment is not permitted on the beach for any use.
VI.
Team Identification Signage
1. Each team must provide one Team Identification Sign of 24”x36” with easel or equal.
a. You may attach decorative supports or additional “flair” to your sign.
b. No additional signage is permitted.
2. Signage must list the Team name or the name of the Primary Firm entering the competition.
3. Company names, flags are permitted as long as they do not intrude on one’s neighboring site.

4. DO NOT DESTROY YOUR STRUCTURE OR SIGNAGE AFTER THE EVENT. Official photos of all entries will
be taken after the event for PR purposes.
VII.
Team Members and Team Composition
AIA Connecticut Member Firms.
Design and/or Construction Industry Members
Individual Members may form teams.
Each team may invite a friends, family, sponsors and contractors to participate on their
team for the competition.
2. Inappropriate behavior will result in team disqualification and/or removal from the beach.
3. Alcoholic Beverages are not permitted on West Haven Beaches.
4. Each team must respect the space of the sites around them. A team that damages a competitor’s site
will be required to assist in repairing the damage.
5. No professional sand sculptors will be allowed to participate on the day of the event.
VIII.
Judging
8. Awards will be presented for Best Structure and People’s Choice
a. Gold Bucket (1st Place) – Best Structure
b. Silver Shovel – People’s Choice
