MINUTES 5A CONFERENCE COMMITTEE MEETING April 7, 2015 Members Attendance: Dan Nero, Chair Steve McDowell, Fiesta Steve Hogen, East Valley Mike Sivertson, Desert West Jim Braden, Northwest Zach Munoz, Metro Derek Bosch, Gila Valley Corey Newland, Desert Valley Dr. Anna Battle, 5A Executive Board Rep Marcus Williams, Central AIA Staff Present: Harold Slemmer, AIA Executive Director Ron Halbach, Tournament Coordinator Dean Visser, Tournament Coordinator Michele Staples, AIA Liaison Guests: Dave Shapiro APPROVAL OF MINUTES Steve Hogen motioned to approve the February 12, 2015 minutes. o Jim Braden 2nd All in favor o 5A Conference Committee Meeting Minutes – February 12, 2015 AIA REPORT (Dr. Anna Battle) Nothing to report at this time. The April meeting will include the board reviewing applications for new board members in the 1A and 3A Conference as well as the ASA position. Cory Newland stated that the Football Sports Advisory Committee was discussing the option of having Freshman Football games on another day besides Wednesday to give them more practice time. o Dr. Slemmer explained the reason that the freshman games are played on Wednesday is due to the scheduling of officials. Marcus Williams asked about USA Football/Heads Up Football and if there will be other options available. o Dr. Battle explained that the board has not focused on a single option. o Dr. Slemmer also stated that the AIA does endorse Heads Up Football. AIAAA REPORT (Marcus Williams) The conference is scheduled for September 12-15, 2015 in Prescott. The sessions are still being finalized and should be posted after the next AIAAA meeting on April 23 at the AIA Office. 5A Conference Committee Minutes April 7, 2015 EXTRA FEES/GAME CHANGES (Corey Newland) Core Newland shared a spreadsheet that his secretary compiled regarding fees and game changes which seemed extremely high. Steve Hogen stated that his fees and game changes weren’t extreme at all. Dr. Slemmer asked Corey to take the document in to Denise Doser and Jeanie Kosower to go over it and make sure there’s not a charge that shouldn’t have been added. 2015-2016 SCHEDULES (Marcus Williams) Marcus Williams wanted clarification on teams that can’t complete a schedule. He contacted Brian Bolitho who answered the questions that it is opened up in order to complete the schedule. Steve Hogen asked about Freedom game schedules and the process for individual sports. o Dr. Slemmer explained that the Sports Advisory Committee’s will be meeting to decide the schedules for the individual sports after the appeal hearings this week. o Dr. Battle suggested that the Conference region chairs attend the SAC scheduling meetings to give input on the scheduling process. The committee discussed scheduling of team sports and decided to continue with the system that is currently in place but look at it in the future. Dr. Battle asked the region charis to reach out to Swim Sports Advisory Committee members to request a scheduling meeting for each one. o Steve Hogen will reach out to the East Valley administrators, Corey Newland and Mike Sivertson will reach out to the Northwest Valley administrators and Derek Bosch will reach out to the Yum and Tucson administrators. o The goal is to let the SAC members know that they can assist with the schedules but the region chairs will do the scheduling. Cross Country, Wrestling and Track scheduling will be completed in the same demographics as Swim. Ron Halbach shared with the committee that the Swim SAC has already set a meeting for this Friday to set the schedules per an email received by David Smithers, Swim SAC Chair. o Ron asked for some direction from the committee as the Swim SAC is coming from all areas of the state. o Dr. Battle asked the schedule be labeled as a “Draft” for further review. o Ron stated that the schedule is a draft until it is reviewed and approved by the Executive Board on April 20th. o Ron handed out a copy of the email from David Smithers that was sent uot to all coaches and ADs that have a swim program. o Dr. Battle shared concern that the information was not sent out to the District ADs as well. o Ron stated that in the previous 4A and 5A Conference meetings, the Conference Committees wanted the Sports Advisory Committees to do the scheduling. Dean Visser and Dave Shapiro came in to explain the process for the scheduling of Cross Country along with Wrestling. o Track appeals were heard on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 and the scheduling meeting will be scheduled soon. -1- 5A Conference Committee Minutes April 7, 2015 Due to the information that was shared by Ron Halbach, Dean Visser and Dave Shapiro the 5A Conference decided that they will review a draft schedule for the said sports at their May meeting. REGION CHAIR REPORTS Central: N/R Desert Valley: N/R Desert West: N/R East Valley: Steve Hogen said that he wanted to discuss bylaw changes and other items that have been discussed before but not during this meeting. Mesa USD is holding a meeting at 8:00 am on Wednesday, April 8 regarding online eligibility process. Fiesta: N/R Gila Valley: Derek Bosch asked about Spring Football season and where it can be found. He asked about football schedules because he was only scheduled for three games instead of eight games. Dr. Battle suggested for Derek to contact Brian Bolitho about this issue. Metro: Scheduling a Holiday Classic again this year in December. Northwest: Jim Braden asked about turnovers for ADs. Dan Nero shared statistics of an average of 30% turnover rate of ADs.
