Kobudo Camp 2015
Kobudo Camp is right around the corner—are your weapons out and dusted off? (Why were they
dusty…?) Maybe you just ordered your first weapons? Plan on attending our reviews and groups for
teaching new techniques. Plan on being here on Thursday, July 16 and Friday, July 17 to spend some
quality time with Dr. Moss, Mr. Harmaning, Mr. Bailey and enjoy learning fluency with Okinawan
kobudo weapons. Plan on having a good time and then finishing it off with a fun family picnic on
Saturday, July 18, beginning at noon.
The picnic will be at Game Farm Wilderness Park. We will provide hotdogs and service items.
Please bring a side dish to share and your own beverages.
Cost for the camp is only $50 per person. Please sign up with Mrs. Barnette and if you have any
questions, ask your instructor!
All camp attendees are also invited to begin their Saturday with Dr. Moss at the school for two
hours (9:00-11:00 a.m.) to see a demonstration and learn about the open hand applications of the
AKKW (American Kenpo Karate and Weapons) and how they compare and contrast to the AKEA.
to Our Newest Shodans!
Mr. Aaron Gonzales and Mr. Willie Jensen have both
completed their assessments for the rank of Shodan and
passed! Both Mr. Jensen and Mr. Gonzales have been
training for about five-and-a-half years. The fact that
they were able to reach this rank in that time speaks to
their commitment and dedication to the work and time
such a rank requires. Shodan is a rank that can only be
achieved if a student truly wants it—and both of these
gentlemen demonstrated throughout their training and
tests that they made martial arts a priority in their lives
and put 110% effort into their learning. Congratulations,
gentlemen; we are all proud of what you accomplished!
We are inviting all students to participate in the Auburn Health Fair on August 22 at
11:00. We will be on stage for 45 minutes, demonstrating 15 minute “mini-groups.” Mr.
Moore will lead escrima. Mr. Harmaning will lead kids. Mr. Tork will lead fighting
skills. While we will not be doing a scripted demo like we have in the past, we will still be
going over the drills in groups prior to the Fair.
Group Changes Beginning in August
New Monday Evening Group Begins in September
Mr. Bailey will be starting a group from 6:30-7:30 on Mondays that is focused on increasing students’
spontaneous self-defense skills. This group will be open to adult (16+) students of any belt level. If you
want to test your ability to respond during stressful situations, this is the group for you! As you put your
fall schedule together, remember to include this group; attending groups is critical for your continued improvement and your ability to apply your martial arts knowledge for self-defense.
Wednesday Escrima Group starts in August
Starting in August the AKEA will be offering an Escrima class every Wednesday, 6:00-7:00. This class
is specifically designed to increase your proficiency and knowledge of Escrima.
Mr. Moore began training in Escrima in June 1994 and will bring his passion for the Fillipino martial
arts to this class. Remember that this is the American Karate-ESCRIMA Association. Your Escrima training should be treated with equal importance as your karate. It effects not only how we approach our weapons training but in how we do our empty hand self-defense. We will cover:
 Mastery of the Five Strikes and Parries at full power and speed
 Using your footwork to enhance your self-defense and control range
 Two man drills and their self-defense applications
 Empty Hand Escrima applications
 Introduction to Knife fighting and defenses against an attacker armed with a knife
 Enhanced Live Hand Skills
 Two Stick Fighting
 Understanding of the Escrima concepts and how to apply them to other areas of self-defense such as
you techniques and forms
 Escrima terminology and history
 Defanging the serpent concepts for self-defense
 Spontaneous Self Defense with both the stick and Empty Hands
Wednesday Night Group Combines Skills Practice and Fighting
Beginning in August, Wednesday nights 7:00-8:00 will be a group for adults that will combine
sequential foundational techniques and application of fighting concepts. The drills and exercises in
this group will challenge you to improve, no matter what rank you hold, and students of all skill levels
will learn something every week that will enhance your knowledge of martial arts.
The only true way to achieve mastery of skills in the martial arts is to practice techniques on a variety of opponents—not just one instructor. This group will provide you with the opportunity to work
with other students and learn through repetition and experience.
Be sure to mark your calendars for Wednesday night groups—start with escrima and end with
skills and fighting!
