The students learn all the essential steps of mask making from original idea to final product. 3 Credits The Summer Arts Program at the Accademia dell´Arte gives students a unique opportunity to live and study in an artistic community in the heart of Tuscany. While choosing two classes (6 hours credit) among various creative disciplines, students and faculty will participate in a weekly seminar to explore how an engagement with place influences perspective, as well as how perspective is revealed through different forms of expression. The natural beauty of Tuscany and the surrounding presence of the historic environment is a perfect setting to stimulate creative expression. We invite students to join our vibrant community for an unforgettable summer experience. Documentary Film: Theory and Production Recognizing the reciprocity of theory and practice, this course combines study of existing canonical documentary films with the creative exercise of students´ own film production. Through the study of film history from mid-century French cinéma vérité and American direct cinema to the interactive and essayistic modes of self-reflexive documentaries, the course will sensitize students to stylistic choice in the production of their own short films. The course culminates in a film screening of final projects for the broader ADA audience. 3 Credits Commedia dell'Arte This acting class will develop the practical use of the masks of the stock characters of the commedia dell'arte. Through work on improvisation, gesture, voice and movement within a specific socio/historical context, students will explore the characteristics of Arlecchino, Zanni, Brighella, Pantalone, Colombina and others, with the intention of developing the student's own personal version of the character. 3 Credits Painting in Arezzo For centuries, artists have made the pilgrimage to Italy to study the great visual art of the Italian masters, to paint the stunning beauty of the varied Italian landscapes, and to sample the food, wine, and lifestyle of the Italian people. In this course, students will paint from their perception in the town of Arezzo - both inside its Duomo, and directly in front of some of Italy's renowned masterpieces. Students will imbibe the atmosphere that has produced some of the world's greatest Art while exploring the aesthetic sensibility of Tuscan life. 3 Credits Creative Writing: Writing Place This is an introductory course in the writing of brief prose with a focus on place-based writing and travel writing. Writers will study the aesthetics of flash fiction, micro-essays, and prose poems, in an attempt to understand and utilize cross-pollination between genres. We will explore basic craft issues (e.g., plot, character, language, setting, point of view, dialogue, voice), and we will write from our Italian experiences and travels. In addition, we will explore storyboarding and scriptwriting to create short films that reflect upon our learning experiences at the Accademia dell'Arte. 3 Credits Seminar: Place and Perspective The Seminar will thematically link the questions of Place and Perspective to each area of study as well as to the overall experience while in Arezzo. All faculty will be involved in the seminar and will offer their unique disciplinary "takes" on the importance of place and perspective in forming a sense of being. All students will participate in the weekly seminar meetings.
