A perfect venue for School Trips, Overseas groups, Families, Special Events and Specialist Programmes.
East Dene
is a truly inspirational venue with the Mansion and the Coach House set in beautiful grounds
and woodland, both overlooking the sea. Each building has a different character; the Mansion was the
home of two important Victorian families and the Coach House was built to provide for their horses and
carriages. Both have been converted with the needs of children in mind whilst retaining the heritage of
such grand buildings.
The majority of our bedrooms are bunk bedded with single and twin bedded rooms nearby. The Mansion
can accommodate up to 100 children or can be sub divided for smaller class size groups. The Coach
House can accommodate up to 80 children and can also be subdivided to provide exclusive bedrooms
for class sizes. There are showers and toilets on every floor.
In each building there is a lounge with unlimited tea and coffee for adults and a fridge to chill your wine,
a meeting room and WiFi. In the Coach House there are two rooms which specialise in information on the
seashore, coast and local Bonchurch History. The Mansion Rooms are stunning with magnificent ceilings
and oak panels which give a great sense of Victorian grandeur and yet are comfortable and relaxing. The
Coach House Hall has recently been re-roofed and has a lovely light meeting room and indoor space. It
is often used for concerts and exhibitions.
Mealtimes are a very important part of the East Dene experience. Children from both buildings are
served in the Mansion where there are three traditional dining rooms. The menus have been developed
to provide for the hungriest and fussiest of eaters! There is a choice at each meal for adults, children and
vegetarians. Special diets are no problem.
Each group is provided with a sports box for use during downtime but we especially encourage children
to explore and play out in the woods knowing that they are in a safe environment outdoors without traffic
or strangers. The heated outdoor pool is also very popular.
East Dene also has direct access to the Old Church of St Boniface, one of the smallest and oldest
churches on the Island and down to Monks Bay for rock pooling and beach study and games.
Everybody says that East Dene is very special!
- FIELD STUDIEs DEPARTMENT The Allnatt Field Studies Department is well established with long term partner schools.

Our schools return regularly because they recognise the importance of “seeing things for real” in
enabling their students’ academic success. With an unbeatable location it is focussed on the Chatsworth
Centre in Swanage on the Dorset Jurassic Coast for its textbook case studies. We also run quality
programmes around the most popular coastal and tourism modules at East Dene on the Isle of Wight.
Experiencing the natural environment first hand and people’s use of it brings classroom subjects alive to
students. It provides a sense of realism, excitement and an experience that cannot be generated by
textbooks alone. Our method of teaching encourages students to think for themselves and provides
opportunities to practice fieldwork and data collection techniques.
Our programmes give relevance to classroom topics as they are concerned with real people in real
situations and deal with real issues. They enable students to observe, record, analyse, present and
interpret their own investigations. They provide students with the opportunity to talk about their own
work, listen to others, share their knowledge and work cooperatively using academic, practical and social
skills.
OUR PROGRAMMES
We provide a range of programmes aimed at different Year Groups and different levels of academic
ability. Programmes are generally for a week (Monday to Friday) or a short week (Monday to Wednesday
or Wednesday to Friday) or a weekend (Friday to Sunday).
OUR FIELD STUDY TUTORS
Our highly regarded tutors have a sound knowledge of the sites we work in and any potential hazards of
those sites. This is recorded and available to you as Risk Assessments for your peace of mind and
records. We are all graduates with a strong commitment to working in the outdoors. We are part of the
local community at each Centre and have local contacts to contribute specialist knowledge if needed.
We also have a regard for the conservation of the sites we use. Above all, we teach well, and we develop
open and respectful relationships with the students bringing out the best in them.
WORKBOOKS
Included in each programme is a comprehensive workbook to include all the data collection and extra
information needed through the course. However, the greatest inspiration comes from our tutors who are
so passionate about the classic field study sites they feel privileged to work in, and they thoroughly enjoy
sharing their enthusiasm with all the students they teach.
FIELDWORK FOCUS
This is aimed at students in Years 7-9 and is their first Field Studies experience. This is often cross
curricular combining geography, biology and history. Fieldwork techniques are blended with outdoor
activities which engage the students’ attention and promote the subject.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Experience of a number of Fieldwork techniques
2. Understanding the links between different subjects such as geography, biology, history, leisure
and tourism, PHSE and Art and Design
3. Encouragement of lifelong learning by learning syllabus topics away from school
4. A positive attitude to the outdoors
5. Personal responsibility for safety, possessions and each other’s welfare

GEOGRAPHY IN ACTION
This innovative programme has brought the subject alive to those who prefer to be active rather than sit
in the classroom. Experiencing the features of the coastline through rock climbing and kayaking gives a
totally different emphasis for the need to understand the properties of different rock types and coastal
processes as well as the impact of tourism. The programme is suitable for Year 7 upwards and many of
our partner schools report that this results in a higher uptake of Geography as a GCSE subject.
Learning Outcomes:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Understanding and interpreting local features
Understanding local development issues
Practice of fieldwork techniques and data collection
A demonstration of increased personal confidence and teamwork through outdoor adventurous
activities
5. Putting theories into practice whilst enjoying the outdoors

GCSE & CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT
“Our local knowledge and expertise makes the Chatsworth’s Field
Studies Centre ideal to bring your GCSE group!”
Our 2 or 4 night residential gives you the time you need for us to cover your controlled assessment,
collect data, or prepare for an exam. Our programmes are tailored to your specifications. Each group will
have a dedicated coordinator for pre- and post-visit information.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Assistance with your chosen controlled assessment
task question.
2. Allowing time if desired for writing up and date
presentation.
3. Giving the students a wide range of knowledge to
assist with their studies.
4. Allowing the opportunity for students to see
geographical features first hand.
5. Increased comprehension of physical processes by
witnessing the results.
6. Access to the teaching team for follow up questioning.
POPULAR STUDY MODULES AT THIS LEVEL INCLUDE:
Coastal Formations
Coastal formations are studied as part of a coastal walk. Groups will look at
the formations of bays and headlands from above and see how a discordant
coastline can be shaped by erosion. They will walk to the end of the headland
and observe the famous stack formations at Old Harry’s Rocks. Different types
of erosion will be discussed and groups will be encouraged to draw and
annotate a field sketch to show the processes and features.
Coastal
Geomorphology &
Tourism
Investigation
Starting at the arch formation Durdle Door, groups will look at how coves are
formed along a concordant coastline. Through a coastal walk, they will trace
the cove formation looking at different stages in the formation, finishing at an
Embryo Cove. Students will look at how tourism is managed around Lulworth
Cove and the impacts tourists have on the area.
Coastal Processes
and Management
On an ever-changing coastline, groups will study the beach’s defences that
are in place and how effective they are. They will observe the effects of
slumping in the area and how the land use around the beach can be affected.
Data will be collected to show the coastal processes that are occurring,
focusing on Long Shore Drift in the area. There is the opportunity to visit a
managed and unmanaged area for a comparison.
Fragile Ecosystems
Heathland habitats are one of the most fragile ecosystems in Britain. Studying
the sand dune ecosystem, groups will compare a typical profile to what they
are measuring. They will look at the topography of the dunes and how the
vegetation changes as you move away from the sea. Groups will look at the
impacts humans are having on this environment.

GEOGRAPHY DATA COLLECTION
TECHNIQUES
“Our specialised tutors all have a relevant degree and experience in
the area to ensure your syllabus needs are met.”
Whether you are studying the current syllabus or the reformed syllabus for 2016, we can design a
programme to suit you.
Learning outcomes:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Understand the theory behind data collection methods
Experience a variety of sampling techniques
To analyse the data collected and show the results
To introduce a variety of statistical analysis and complete a statistical test
To be enthused in aspects of fieldwork
POPULAR STUDY MODULES AT THIS LEVEL INCLUDE:
Urban and Rural
Rebranding
Investigating both a Rural and Urban case study, students will look at the
history of the areas and why they needed to rebrand. They will investigate
the success of the rebranding using photographic evidence, questionnaires
and environmental surveys. The rural rebranding will look at a local farm that
has become an adventure park. This will include an insightful talk from the
owner and a trip around the farm.
River Systems and
Flooding
A River Study from the source of the river to the mouth, students will look at
how the system is affected by flooding and compare the river to Bradshaw’s
Model. At between 6 and 10 locations, they will look at the river’s depth,
width, wetted perimeter, bedload, velocity, gradient and how the area is
managed in terms of flooding. Back at the field Studies Centre, groups can
produce cross-sections of the river with the help of our tutors and calculate
the hydraulic radius.
Coastal Management
On an ever-changing coastline, groups will study the beach’s defences that
are in place and how effective they are. They will observe the effects of
slumping in the area and how the land use around the beach can be
affected. Data will be collected to show the coastal processes that are
occurring, focussing on Long Shore Drift in the area. There is the opportunity
to visit a managed and unmanaged area for a comparison.
Crowded Coasts
Students will look at the diversity of our coastline and study the
concentration of the population in coastal areas. They will look at the
economic and environmental benefits and costs that relate to these
crowded areas. They can look at how the areas are at risk from coastal
processes and how this is being managed. Back at the Field Studies Centre
groups can look on Google Earth and the areas have changed over time.
BIOLOGY DATA COLLECTION
TECHNIQUES
AS /A2

Our specialised tutors all have a relevant degree and experience in the area to ensure your syllabus
needs are met and your students are supported in their investigations.
Whether you are planning to do your quantitative and qualitative assessments whilst with us, or here for
background knowledge, we can tailor your programme to ensure all the aspects you need are covered.
Learning outcomes:
6. Understand the theory behind data collection methods
7. Experience a variety of sampling techniques
8. To analyse the data collected and show the results
9. To introduce a variety of statistical analysis and complete a statistical test
10. To be enthused in aspects of fieldwork
POPULAR STUDY MODULES AT THIS LEVEL INCLUDE:
Calcareous
Grasslands
Comparing a trampled and un-trampled section of calcareous grasslands,
students will identify key plant species in the different areas. They will look
at how trampling can impact on the grasslands and how humans have
influenced the area. They will study the vegetation within a quadrat and
discuss different sampling techniques that can be used.
Freshwater Ecology
and river pollution
Focusing on Biotic and Abiotic factors, students will investigate different
sites along a river. They will be looking at the invertebrates that live there
and the water quality. They will compare Trent’s Biotic Index to the chemical
tests and see if there is a correlation. They will use kick sampling and
identification keys.
Psammosere
Succession
Heathland habitats are one of the most fragile ecosystems in Britain.
Studying the Psammosere, groups will compare a typical profile to what
they are measuring. They will look at the topography of the dunes, how
vegetation alters and abiotic factors that affect it. Groups will look at the
impacts humans are having on this environment. There is the opportunity to
compare 2 transects with different levels of trampling.
Rocky Shore
Zonation
Students will explore the marine life across the shore. Starting in the splash
zone, students will look at the marine organisms that live here. They will
study the adaptations they have to survive and the stress factors that
influence them. They will follow a transect through the intertidal zone to the
upper shore recording the different organisms found.

Supporting your Parents’ Talk
Involving parents is key and before the first visit of a new group we are happy to come along to give an
illustrated talk and to answer any questions. Alternatively we have a PowerPoint Presentation for you to
use yourselves. We are extremely conscious of the responsibility you hold as a group leader and the
lack of time in your busy schedules so this is our way of giving you all the information and support you
need especially to keep Parents informed and confident in your choice of venue.
“Our aim is to develop a long term Partnership with all our
Schools, supporting your approach, by providing holistic education
for each individual, with our own specific and stimulating
contribution.”
Transport
We are happy to help with organising the most reliable and cost effective transport to either of our
Centres. Getting to the Isle of Wight is simple to arrange and the journey across the sea makes an
exciting beginning to all visits to the Island. There are several routes to choose from. Coaches can pick
up your group and bring you to our door. Alternately you may arrange for your own coach to drop you at
the Mainland port and our local coach service pick you up from the island port and bring you to our door.
Foot passengers can come by Hovertravel (provided they can carry their own cases!) Be sure to book
online to attract the best discounts
“At school we endeavour to create opportunities for cooperation,
team building and thinking outside the box, however time and
facilities can limit this. The activities and environment at your
centres promote all the qualities that we feel are important for
our children to become independent learners”
