Based on earth elements, Fossil & Form features the jewelry of Edward Lawrence, designed from rare artifacts with interesting fabrications. These unique compositions inspire conversation. This work couples beautifully with the functional ceramic sculpture of local artisan
Mary Anderson, whose artistic hands work the potter’s wheel and beyond, to shape clay into fine art.
EDWARD LAWRENCE transforms Fossil Walrus Ivory from St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, Mammoth Ivory from the Yukon Territory, and other artifacts into something “one can relate to and wear….becoming a part of one’s life”. Edward has been a
craftsman all his life. He started as a custom shoe maker in 1971 and his work included leather accessories and beadwork. In
fact, many Sierra Foothill residents may still own a pair of Edward’s, gorgeous and comfortable moccasins or sandals. Joining
Edward in his endeavors is his wife, Diana who contributes jewelry designs and fabrications.
MARY ANDERSON sees her ceramic work as a meditation on the forms of nature. Her fascination is with the vessel, which
besides being useful and functional, is a platform for sculptural elements. Plant forms, the geometry and rhythm of leaves or
seeds are interpreted as vases, pouring vessels and bowls. Leaping fish, the fluid body of an octopus, and twisting lizards
transform the pot becoming its shaped neck, reaching handles.

IN APRIL, ARTIST, CYNTHIA DUNN-SELPH,
WILL BE DEMONSTRATING ENCAUSTIC TECHNIQUES AT THE ACAA MEETING.
Cynthia is a life-long artist who recently moved to Pine Grove from the Phoenix, AZ
area, where was an active member of the fine arts community. Raised in an artistic
family, (her father was a graphic designer, her mother a woodworker) Cynthia’s
childhood dream of “being an artist” has flourished throughout her life. Always fascinated by being able to use “little bits of everything”, she found her passion in
mixed media, and also in photography. Her encaustic explorations began about 2
years ago, when she discovered that combining encaustic with photography allowed her to create something totally unique. “There is nothing like encaustic,” she
says. “I love it. It is a very versatile medium, and creates unique art. Nothing else
looks like encaustic. “
Encaustic art useseeswax mixed with damar resin and pigment, and this
mixture is applied to a surface. Cynthia will be demonstrating the hot wax
technique, heating the wax, and painting it on a surface. When applied in
layers, the finished work shows a wonderful depth of color, and Cynthia
says, “everyone I know wants to touch it”. Because the wax immediately
melts into the surface, encaustic is also a wonderful media
for mixed media art works, and
Cynthia will show how to combine it with photographs and 3
dimensional items for unique
effects. The demonstration will
show how to use hot wax, but encaustic also includes a cold wax
technique, and samples of both hot and cold applications will be
shared at the demo.
GALLERY 10 FEATURES JULIE TRAIL -- Rocks, Rills, and Wooded Hills
Gallery 10 celebrates new paintings by Sutter Creek artist, Julie Trail, in
April. Julie has been working on larger format watercolors for her April
show, “Rocks, Rills, and Wooded Hills.” She has also been experimenting with textural techniques in watercolor to enhance the richness of her
landscapes. Always drawn to the beauty of the foothills and mountains,
Julie strives to capture that moment when a ray of sunshine peeks into a
hidden glade, mountains of granite bake white under a bright blue sky,
or a giant juniper bends its boughs
in a Sierra breeze. Be sure to stop
by Gallery 10 in Sutter Creek
where Julie’s paintings will hang
from April 1-30. A reception will be held at the gallery on April 4, 25 P.M., as part of the Amador Art Trek. All are welcome!

OPEN STUDIO TOUR REPORT
Plans are underway for the Amador Artist’s Open Studio Tour, and 2015 promises to be even better than last year. The date
for the Tour is Sept 19-20, and the deadline for committing to be in the Tour is June 1. Information about artist participation,
as well as the new Call For Artists brochure, will be available at the April meeting. This is a fun opportunity for all Amador
County artists to show and sell their work, and to support this fundraiser for the Student Art Show and the Student Scholarship.
Still on the TO-DO list is:

Think about where you might want to show. We have discovered that groupings of artists draw a lot of people, and group
locations are organizing now. Contact Karen if you want more info or suggestions. If you have your own studio, all the
better.

Start preparing a list of your special customers to invite. Personal invitations to people who already know your work tend
to bring them to the show, and collecting email addresses, snail mail addresses now will ensure that your list is larger,
and that no gets left out.

Help us choose publicity materials and make plans at the Studio Tour Brainstorm at 6:15 at the Senior Center on April 8,
just before the next ACAA meeting. Please call Karen Crane, this year’s chairperson, at 223-1720 or
[email protected] for more information.

Consider helping with Publicity, we still need a committee chair. New members Colleen Williams (Fundraising) and Cynthia Dunn-Selph (Artist Contact) have volunteered their expertise to help with this event, and there are various jobs still
available that need what you are good at!
For more information, please contact Studio Tour Chair Karen Crane at 223-1720 or at [email protected]
April 23 Arts Networking Event will be a
Student Arts Showcase
Mark your calendar for Thursday, April 23 for the time to view a
wildly creative cross-section of art created by local students during
the April Arts Networking Mixer from 6 to 8 pm. Transformed into
an art gallery will be Thomi’s Banquet Room in the Amador Plaza
in south Jackson. Student music will be featured too. Complimentary appetizers and tasty waters will be served, and wine by the
glass will be available. The event is free to AmadorArts members
and student artists; $5 for everyone else. This is usually one of the
most well-attended mixers. Be amazed by our youth’s creativity!
You may ask, why is art important? One answer is that kids feel a
sense of emotional satisfaction when they are involved in making
art. They have control over the materials they use, making decisions about form, color, etc. Building self-esteem is another result,
because students are given opportunities to express what they are
thinking and feeling. One of the primary goals of AmadorArts is to
provide some type of Arts Education to every elementary school
classroom. A comprehensive program has been developed by
Sue Lagomarsino, Chair of Arts Education, that that includes a
variety of short workshops given by professional artists, as well
as longer residencies by trained art and poetry teachers. Performances by the acclaimed B Street Theatre to all schools is another component looked forward to every year by both students and
teachers.

Call To Artists
Phantom Gallery is now being formed under the umbrella of Sutter Creek Gallery in Sutter Creek.
Our first show will be held in May at a yet to be decided upon location in Amador County and will be a garden or florist or another similar
privately owned business related to gardening or flowers. The theme, of course, will be gardening or floral.
We are anxious to build a team of artists that would be interested in showing their work at various business locations and would be willing
to do themed work according to the type of business that wants to participate.
We would gather together to show on a quarterly basis. Not every artist would be expected to show at every exhibit, rather, select the
themes they are inspired to do.
We are hoping for a large, diverse group.
Artists may belong to any gallery or art organization they wish, and participate as often as they wish.
Artists would split any expenses, and would be entitled to 100% of sales of their artwork.
Artists would provide cards with titles, prices and Where To See More Of This Artist's Work.
We feel this will bring more people to view art at businesses as well as galleries. This was a result of the over 300 attendees at the Hotel
Sutter for the River Reflections Traveling Exhibit.
If you are interested, please reply ASAP so we can get moving on the May show.

SUTTER CREEK GALLERY
“April Showers Bring May Flowers,” that is the theme at Sutter Creek Gallery for
the month of April. Rather than featuring a single artist, all of the cooperative members have been challenged to create a piece of art related to this theme. Group exhibitions will alternate with shows highlighting individual artists.
Gallery members create paintings in all media, produce photographs of wild and domestic animals as well as local scenes, fabricate jewelry from handmade beads and
natural materials, turn gourds into works of art, and so much more. Come see the
unique pieces created by these talented artists.
The gallery will hold a reception to celebrate the theme on Saturday, April 4,
from 4 to 7 p.m., in conjunction with the region’s First Saturday Art Trek. Floral
arrangements will be on display and for sale at this time. Created by local florists
and gallery artists, the arrangements will interpret various artworks on exhibit.
This cooperative of local artists is located in the heart of Sutter Creek at 35 Main Street. Besides original paintings and photographs, Sutter Creek Gallery offers many affordable items including prints, cards, jewelry, gourds
and fiber arts. The gallery is open Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday
and Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For additional information, call 209-267-0228, email [email protected],
