On-line at : amanacoloniestoday.com No. 07 A M A N A N E WS AND NOT E S Palof Runs Go St. Louis Marathon Nancy Palof, had never run a marathon before, so when she stood at the starting line of the Go St. Louis Marathon on April 12, she was a little nervous. Having started training in November for the 26.2 mile event, Palof felt prepared, but still, this was uncharted territory. At mile 20 she wondered if she would finish, but she kept on running and hoped for the best. Four hours and 19 minutes later, when Palof crossed the finish line she couldn’t help but grin. “I was floored . . .I couldn’t believe it!” Just to put this into perspective, the national average finishing time for women running marathons is 4.52, according to marathon.guide.com. First time marathoners usually don’t finish with a time anywhere near that and most hope simply to finish the race. A time of 4.19 is awesome. Palof, who grew up in Amana and now lives in Cedar Rapids, began running as a hobby in 2010 when a friend at Iowa State University, Lia Bahls, urged her to take it up. “I saw Lia running laps around the track and when I started, I could barely run a lap, but she encouraged me to keep going.” Determination and practice made the difference, and in time, Palof increased her workouts, running 10 or more miles a week. Palof is a behavioral analyst working with children who have autism, so patience is something she knows and practices. “You just have to keep at it and not give up!” Last year she and Lia ran a half-marathon and did well, “Coming off of that high, Lia said, ‘Hey let’s do the St. Louis marathon and I said, ‘Ok!’” Does she plan to continue running marathons? “This was on my bucket list so I’m happy I did it, but I think I’ll stick to half-marathons!” Palof told us. OCTC Studio Season Opener a Must See The Old Creamery Theatre Co. goes to war with a series of award winning, highly acclaimed plays not to be missed on its Studio Stage this season, just as the world acknowledges the 100th anniversary of World War I. You would have to travel to Chicago or Minneapolis to see this level of play writing, acting and production. Take advantage of the opportunity and do not miss these shows at the Old Creamery. The Studio Stage is located alongside the Amana Library at the school in Middle Amana. It’s comfortable, easy to get to and tickets are affordable. Amana resident Ric Gerard was in the audience to see last weekend’s opening performance of “Billy Bishop Goes to War” written by John Gray and Eric Peterson. “Billy Bishop Goes to War” combines excellent musical numbers, comedy and vibrant story telling in a gripping, emotion-filled, show, Gerard tells us. Directed by Sean McCall, this is a thought provoking, dramatic and very entertaining play that makes history come alive, and leads us to reconsider past and present. The show stars Santa Fe native Vaughn Irving whose credits include performances in over 40 productions in 7 states. Plus he is the creator of two original, award winning musicals featured at News & Notes continues on page 2 Electronic version readers of the Bulletin may connect to websites or e-mails by moving your curser over most of those items and clicking. Irving is joined onstage by Andrew Crowe, who has done national tours of “Cabaret,” “Sweeney Todd” and “Stand by Your Man” and has performed in the New York City’s Shakespeare in the Park “Twelfth Night.” Gerard writes in his review of the show, “The title role is performed by Vaughn Irving and he absolutely nails the role. He takes Billy from an irresponsible youth to a genuine war hero in an outstanding job of developing the character. He makes you laugh and then makes you want to cry. Irving has to portray a group of varied individuals as he relates his story and his subtle voice changes and accents are spot on. He is joined on stage by Andrew Crowe whose musical talents on the piano, harmonica and violin contribute so much to the feel of this show. Both men have very good vocal abilities, as well as their acting talents, which make this show work.” “A talented cast, the costuming by Marquetta Senters is up to her usual high standards and …. a good set make for a terrific night at the theatre.” “In my lifetime, on too many occasions, I have seen young soldiers head to war as if it were a great adventure only to return home vastly changed men. They have discovered war is not a lark but a very difficult and disturbing part of their lives that leaves them changed forever. This play captures those feelings. Page Four April 16, 2015 AMANA SOCIETY BULLETIN Obituary George P. Mittelbach, age 93 of Amana, died Saturday, April 11, 2015 at Colonial Manor of Amana. Funeral Serviceswere hels Tuesday, April 14, 2015, Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana, with Elder Elly Hoehnle officiating. Burial was in the Amana Cemetery with military honors. Memorials may be contributed to the Amana Church Society or Essence of Life Hospice. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is assisting the family with arrangements. George Philipp Mittelbach was born July 14, 1921 in West Amana, Iowa, son of Philipp and Clara (Leichsenring) Mittelbach. He received his education in the West Amana grade school and graduated from Marengo High School in 1939. He attended the University of Iowa from 1940-1942, before enlisting in the Navy as an aviation cadet. He attended Navy preflight school in Iowa City and graduated as a commissioned officer from the Naval Air Navigation School at Oklahoma in 1945. He served as an aviation navigation instructor until 1946, receiving an honorable discharge. While on leave from the Navy, he married Dorothy Marie Leichsenring on December 14, 1944 at the home of her parents, John and Magdalena Leichsenring in Amana. After military service, George worked at Amana Refrigeration for several years before becoming a tool designer at Allis-Chalmers in Cedar Rapids, where he was employed for 10 years. In 1959, he went to work for P&H Harnischfeger Corporation in Cedar Rapids and retired as a manager of manufacturing in 1982 after 24 years with the company. George served on the board of directors of the Amana Society and was a life-long member of the Amana Church, teaching Sunday school for many years. He was also a member of the Amana Heritage Society and served as a mu- seum guide after his retirement. George enjoyed playing golf with his friends at the Marengo golf club, hunting with his son and two grandsons, and he especially enjoyed his early morning walks around Amana. He was an accomplished artist and produced many oil paintings of Amana scenes. Above all, he was devoted to his family and cherished the times he spent with them. George is survived by his son, Gary Mittelbach and wife Katherine Gross of Richland, MI; grandsons John Mittelbach of Venice, CA, and Mark Mittelbach of Kalamazoo, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dorothy (Leichsenring) Mittelbach, and a sister Lucille Langlas. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the nurses and staff of Colonial Manor of Amana and Essence of Life Hospice, for their kind and compassionate care. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.klosterfuneralhome.com. No Charge For Travel, Deodorizing, Or Disinfecting Feathers in the wind This “woman” from Middle reminded the Mayor and me that 2015 would mark the 50th Anniversary of our graduating from Amana High School. I do not understand how she got that idea since I KNOW that I am not even 40, but you just don’t know what kind of people made our class…obviously some with failing memories. Gloria, the Mayor, and I have gotten together some pictures. Naturally Gloria has more pictures. That makes me wonder what she was doing all those years she was in school? I am beginning to wonder if she was lurking behind doors taking pictures at unsuspecting victims. She has even gotten in contact with most of our classmates and collected yet more picture. She and the Mayor have not only to identified people, but also had some good laughs as to when or how the pictures were taken. Some of the clothes and hairstyles defy description not to mention some of the poses. In order to “get even” I want to tell you all about a Y-Teen Slumber Party we had in the gym. The first “brilliant” thing we did was going around the place and unplug the air mattresses. That got boring after about five minutes so some of the girls tried new hairstyles. This was the time when one “teased” one’s hair making it first look like you had stuck some fingers into a light socket. You would then proceed to comb the hair into place using so much hair spray that the ozone layer was compromised. A few girls thought they would never breathe again! Of course there was this one girl who had rather thick eyebrows (a uni-brow) that required two girls to work on her eyelashes while she sat on the sink shrieking from pain. I am not mentioning any names, just yet, and I will accept “gifts” in exchange for a temporary lapse of memory. Naturally there were the girls who decided to “read” romance novels where the older man was always at least 35. Good grief, how dumb could we be? Well the party is planned for the Fourth of July. We plan on getting together the night before and then wandering down to the ballpark in Middle on the Fourth and renewing old friendships. Naturally everyone will be surprised that this is our 50th Reunion since we are all so well put together, have accomplished many things, and are rich beyond our wildest dreams. (I am trying to find someone will give me the winning lottery ticket and help me take a lot of weight off.) B.S.H.
