cca senoir awards night
On Wednesday, May 13th, at 6:30 p.m. Clear
Creek Amana High School will host its annual
Senior Awards Assembly in the Performing Arts
Center. At this ceremony graduating seniors will
be recognized by presentation of awards and
scholarships they have received. This is a wonderful occasion and we invite parents, family and
friends of the Class of 2015 to attend.

HERITAGE SOCIETY KUCHEN UP
TREATS AT MAIFEST
The Amana Heritage Society will once again
offer Obst Kuchen, the traditional Amana fruit
custard pie, at the Festhalle Barn in Maifest Saturday, May 2. This year however it will be part of
a new Maifest event, Art in the Barn. We’ll be offering Kuchen, potato pancakes, curry wurst and
bratwurst in our food tent right outside the Festhalle entrance (right inside if the weather is bad).
We need your help with the Kuchen again. if
you can provide one or two for our booth please
just drop them off that morning, We’ll be there
by 9:00 A.M. If you are new to Kuchen baking

Maifest
Maifest will kick off on Saturday, May 2nd at
10:00AM, with the parade through town, followed
by a new event, Art in the Barn, showcasing local
artists’ work for viewing and purchase.
The Kinderplatz will be open 11AM-3PM on
Saturday at the Market Barn location, and will
have free activities, games, and crafts for children to participate in, including horse rides, face
painting, and fun kid food for purchase! Sunday
brings the Wine/Beer/Food walk, 11AM-4PM.
Must be 21+ to drink. $1.00 fee to participate.

HOMESTEAD DINNER
Join the Amana Heritage Society on a progressive dinner journey through the village of Homestead on Saturday April 25 at 6:00 P.M. The event
begins at the Homestead Blacksmith Shop (next
to Henry’s Market) for appetizers and a blacksmithing demonstration by local artisan Gerald
Rieskamp. We’ll move to the Homestead Church
for the main course of traditional Amana favorites,
and learn a little about the church building and its
architecture. Then it’s on the Zuber’s Homestead
Hotel for dessert and a short presentation on the
history of the village and the hotel.

Amana Arts Guild Dinner Spring Success
For the first time ever, the Amana Arts Guild
communal supper was held in April – last Saturday evening to be exact. And what a wonderful
event it proved to be.
Eighty-one lucky diners enjoyed this delicious
menu as follows: “Karbonade” pork loin, friend
potatoes, creamed asparagus, celery salad, red
cabbage, pickled beets and our beloved bunny
cookies, in honor of Easter with a special and
very entertaining spring themed presentation by
Peter Hoehnle.
As AAG director Deb Hawkes said, “This
wouldn’t have been possible without the help
and hard work of our cooks, Gloria Alexander,
Betty Martens, Carol Hopp, Rozella Vogt and
Lisa Kokesh, and our servers, Marsha Reihman,
Hannah Sandersfeld, Amanda and Carter Fox,
Michelle Schanz, Marci Schwartz, Heather Hess,
Berend Sandersfeld and Julia Bolte.” And thanks
to to Bryce Kokesh, Julana Dicket and Margo
Jorosz who provided behind the scenes support.
Maifest is Just Days Away
There’s a lot going on during our Maifest 2015
and now is the hour to invite friends and family to
join in the celebration. Here are just some of the
many things we’re looking forward to at Maifest:
• The communal meal is Friday, May 1 at the
Ox Yoke and it starts at 6 p.m. Make your reservation by contacting the Ox Yoke today. This
is a dining experience with communal era foods
served and a presentation by a local historian on
Amana’s communal way of life.
• Art in the Barn 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Join local and
regional artists in the Festhalle for a spring art
show and sale. Food and beverages on site.

• A Barber Shop Quartet followed by our own
Barefoot Becky and Ivanhoe Dutchmen will perform on the lawn (or inside should it rain) at the

move to Main Street. Come see these neat antique, classic and modified cars and motorcycles.
Demonstrations and mini-workshops by auto and
cycle pros will round out the day. Noon – 3 p
.m. Lower loop village of Amana. There is plenty
of time to enter your car or cycle. Contact Millstream Brewing Co. to find out entry details.
• Those pretty ponies will be going round from
11 a.m. – 4 p.m at the Market barn in Amana.
Also at the Market barn – fun stuff for kids to do.
• 10 a.m. it time to parade and this year the
theme is “Celebrate the ARTS!” Remember
220th Trail will be closed during the parade.
• White Cross Cellars is hosting a wine pairing

Dear Amana Society Shareholders:
It has been a privilege to represent you on the
Amana Society Board. As a director, I have appreciated the opportunity to work on our unique corporation’s challenges and to collaboratively work
toward solutions with other board members and
ASI management.
During my tenure on the ASI Board, the company
has moved forward in challenging times. We have
both reduced debt, as well as invested in strategic
initiatives. I have supported sound strategic planning, follow-through on projects, the mitigation
of risks, and the measurement of our businesses
with benchmark business metrics. My focus has
been to maximize our resources, support our
retail businesses as they grow online sales under our Amana brand, and ensure the continued
progress of the Amana Farms and Amana Service

obituary
Georgia K. Geiger, age 73 of West Amana,
died Friday, April 17, 2015 at her home, following a sudden illness. Per her wishes, her body
was donated to medical research. Memorial Service: 7 P.M. Friday, April 24, 2015, Seventh Day
Adventist Church, 1007 Rider Street, Iowa City,
with Pastor Dale Morrison officiating. Inurnment
will be at a later date. Kloster Funeral Home,
Marengo is assisting with arrangements.
Georgia is survived by a son Kurt S. Geiger of
the Philippines; a daughter Liese Vanderbroek of
Ames; and a half-sister, Dolores LaGrange (Robert) of Amana. She was preceded in death by her
parents, and her husband Charles in 2013.
Georgia Karen Schoenfelder was born September 8, 1941 in Amana, Iowa, the daughter of
George and Elizabeth Ertzinger Schoenfelder.
She graduated from Amana High School, and
married Charles J. Geiger on November 30,
1964 in Omaha, Nebraska. The couple resided in
West Amana, and were active in the Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and Muscatine 7th Day Adventist
Churches. Charles passed away in 2013.

Eggs and Poultry Safe to Eat,
ISU Food Safety Specialist Stresses
Avian influenza does not impact the foods that
consumers eat, says an Iowa State University food
safety expert.
“Consumers should feel safe to eat properly
cooked and prepared meat and eggs from poultry,”
said Angela Shaw, assistant professor in food science and human nutrition and extension specialist
in food safety.
Last week avian influenza was reported for the
first time in Iowa at a turkey barn in Buena Vista
County. This week, the disease was discovered a
commercial chicken flock in Osceola County.
“Avian influenza is not a foodborne pathogen,” said
Shaw. “It cannot be contracted from eating properly
cooked poultry meat and eggs.”
The disease is caused by an influenza virus that
can infect poultry, such as chickens, turkeys, domestic ducks and geese, and is carried by migratory birds such as ducks, geese and shorebirds. Humans can be infected with the virus, but most cases
involve very close direct contact with sick birds.
Shaw said the Food and Drug Administration
maintains that properly cooked poultry and eggs
pose no threat. She advised that consumers always
should follow the FDA’s procedures for safe handling and cooking of poultry products:
•Wash hands with warm water and soap for at
least 20 seconds before and after handling raw
poultry and eggs.
•Clean cutting boards and other utensils with

•Cutting boards may be sanitized by using a solution of 1 tablespoon chlorine bleach and 1 gallon of
water.
•Cook poultry to an internal temperature of at
least 170°F. Consumers can cook poultry to a higher temperature for personal preference.
•Cook eggs until the yolks and whites are firm.
Casseroles and other dishes containing eggs
should be cooked to 170°F.
•Use pasteurized eggs or egg products for recipes that are served using raw or undercooked eggs.
Some examples of these kinds of dishes are Caesar salad dressing and homemade ice cream. Commercial mayonnaise, dressing and sauces contain
pasteurized eggs that are safe to eat. Pasteurized
eggs and egg products are available from a growing
number of retailers and are clearly labeled.
