N E WS AND NOT E S
Rain Didn’t Dampen the Weekend
Though the annual Memorial Day recognition
services at some cemeteries were cancelled due
to rain on Monday morning, folks were able to get
out and visit graves by 11 a.m. on Monday. Quite
a number of people were noted visiting the seven
Amana cemeteries all weekend long, but especially
on Monday.
The Amana Church would like to remind everyone that all grave decorations should be removed
to allow for those who mow to do their work.
Please, if you can, take jars and vases, wreaths,
plastic flowers and so forth home so as not to overfill the waste barrels provided. Volunteers from the
Amana Church placed the flags and crosses on 202
graves in the cemeteries last week and removed
same on Tuesday evening.

Support the Fireworks
We have greatly appreciated the financial support
of our local community for the Fourth of July fireworks in the past. This year we are once again asking for individual contributions to the fireworks fund.
All funds raised will be used for the purchase of the
fireworks alone as a part of this event as we build
community relationships and family values throughout the Amana Colonies by celebrating a meaningful, patriotic, family oriented Independence Day.
Please consider a contribution to the fireworks.
Contribution can be sent to: Amana Community

South Slope to Upgrade Amana
with Fiber Optic Technology
South Slope is preparing to install fiber optics
in homes and businesses in the Amana Colonies
(East Amana already has fiber). Fiber optic technology is the most advanced available and will replace
copper telephone wire at no cost to homeowners
or businesses. With fiber optics, South Slope customers can look forward to a secure and reliable
internet connection, increased bandwidth for faster
internet speeds, and extraordinarily clear television
and telephone service.
In June, South Slope contractors will began construction and in August crews will arrive to splice
the fiber optics. At that time, homeowners and businesses will begin receiving postcards inviting them
to make an appointment to convert to fiber optics.
In addition, South Slope will send crews back out to
make sure all yard cleanup is satisfactory.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss the fiber conversion process further, please
call South Slope at 319-626-2211 and ask for Mark
Ditch. Learn more about the benefits of fiber optics

feathers in the wind
I keep finding pictures that people have dug up
from their files of their days in high school. It will be
my class’ 50th anniversary this year so we are planning a get together.
Thank goodness that the main organizer, Gloria
Alexander, is in charge otherwise we would probably
have to wait another fifty years for a class reunion.
She has the “nerve” to post pictures of us on ”Face
book.” I have tried to figure out ways of removing pictures of myself, but she has some sort of “hex” put on
the website that does not allow me to remove anything. I believe she even has a secret code that only
allows certain people to view the pictures.
I especially “love” the picture of us in our Campfire
outfits. Talk about uniforms that make one look like a
total geek. We even wore beanies!
Later on, in Campfire Girls, we had these vests
upon which we sewed beads that clattered around
like voodoo charms.
Thank goodness the one picture she will not find is
of the high school girls during GYM CLASS.
In our freshman year we had a teacher by the name
of, Mr. Englund. He was also our algebra teacher
making us even more fearful of him.
We had gym class the first thing Monday morning.
I am sure that we used A LOT of deodorant, powder
and perfume after the torture he put us through.
Heaven forbid that we would shower and ruin our
hair before going to school. This was the time before
curling irons so we used lots and lots of hair spray,
which would cause the ozone layer to have a hole
in it.
We were in the school gym lined in military precision. (He had been in the army and even got the
Purple Heart, for what I have no idea.)
I was no fool so I made sure I was always in the
back row wearing my blue shorts, white shirt and
sneakers hoping that he would never single me out.
No one has ever thought of me as being athletic.
We began with jumping jack. I know it was at least
40 of them at a time so you can imagine we just wanted to BREATHE afterwards. He allowed us just a
few seconds or “rest” then on to toe touches, lunges,
and other painful exercises making me want to expire
then and there.
I wonder if he was trying to wear us down from
puberty. (He did not succeed!)
I would sometimes look over at Pat Zuber and wonder why she had not even broke a sweat and then
figure she was just showing off because her mother
was a nurse and therefore she was demonstrating to
the rest of us what a fine physical specimen she was.
Bah! Humbug!
For reasons known only to the Mayor of East she
was always toward the front. I am not sure why, but I
do know that when it came to gym class, she did not
exactly become a Phi Beta Kappa. She and a few
others were often called in front to show how to they
could improve themselves with the exercises.
We could have cared less EXCEPT that it gave us
a moment to catch our breaths again.
I think the shorter people were in the front that
might explain things. Why we would be grouped that
way is anyone’s guess since, in the army, the larger

people are usually in the front of the formation…I
suppose they make better targets.
By the time we were done with these:”exercises”
we got on the bus back to the “old” high school and
classes.
The next day all of us were so sore (especially our
legs) that just getting unto the first step of the bus
was torture. It took about a week until we felt better,
but then the second session of gym class would begin again sort of ruining out weekend.
I often wonder whatever became of Mr. Englund.
I still remember that the very first algebra test he
gave I FLUNKED. I was so heartbroken.
I spoke to the Mayor who told me that when she
reported her grade to her parents she said, “Yes, I
flunked, but at least I was the highest on the list.”
(Isn’t it amazing that that she and I are still friends?)
Do you remember those special moments in your
growing up years? I am sure that Gloria Alexander
would love to hear about them so she can record
them in this book she is composing. I have a feeling
she is going to use it to blackmail us.
