The BBC wrote a lengthy piece on the origin of a
popular tradition in Vienna, the New Year’s concert of
the Vienna Philharmonic. This concert is so popular that
it has evolved into three shows to accommodate the
demand for tickets. The most popular and the original
performance, New Year’s Day, prices its tickets at $1,300 a piece although
many obtain their tickets through ticket brokers at a further premium. The
program is always Johann Strauss along with his three sons and their
contemporaries.
The inaugural concert was held in 1939 when the Nazis held control
of the Austrian State. The thinking was that a nationally broadcast concert
would unite the country better, giving the Nazis stronger control over the
populace. Before the Nazis, Strauss and his sons were spoken of with a bit
of a sneer by their descendent Austrian kin but these annual concerts
refurbished their legacies. The annual concert was so popular that the
Nazis began broadcasting in Germany as well.
The Nazis are well and gone. Enduring and expanded, the New Year’s
concert has become an anticipated yearly tradition. The December 30th
concert is filled with military personnel in the balcony who spend their
military service as international peacekeepers across the globe. What was
once a tool to control a population has instead become a symbol of
historical pride of a nation.
Vienna is still not the friendliest place for Jews in Europe but 16,000
Jews live in the city. The Jewish neighborhood is quiet and mostly ignored.
Johann Strauss has Jewish ancestry, which Nazi Propaganda Minister
Joseph Goebbels kept suppressed. Not anymore. More pointedly, the
orchestra has revoked six medals it awarded to Nazi collaborators. The
orchestra has worked hard to reinvent and allowed independent historians
to study its archives of the time period, a recent development. Patterns of
Jew hatred were firmly ensconced during the Hapsburg Empire and
progressive attitudes are slower to develop in Vienna than in other parts of
Europe. Even so, the reclamation of the New Year’s Day concert for the
people from its origins is a welcome marker of progress.

President’s Message
As you read this column, the Journal Gala
committee will be working on the final
preparations for what is sure to be a
fantastic evening. We decided to experiment this year and do things a little differently. We are having the event earlier in the
year so that we do not interfere with other
programs like our second annual Golf and
Tennis Day in early June. That was such a great time last
year for everyone, including those that only joined us for
dinner, that we have decided to run it again. We also
changed the Journal event from a Sunday brunch to a
Saturday evening dance. We hope that it will be another
fun evening for the entire Temple family to relax and have
a good time. As both president and an honoree, I want to
thank Jack Gingold, Bruce Rabinowitz and their entire
committee for all of their hard work and dedication.
The journal celebration has often only honored the
outgoing president but this year we added a second
honoree. In choosing Steve Miller, we picked someone
who has tirelessly worked for what is best about Am
Echad. In championing the Feed the Hungry program,
Steve has attracted a wide array of congregants to participate in serving the larger needs of our community. I am
proud to share this evening with him.
Most of you may not realize this but there is also a
third honoree which is Temple Am Echad itself. By supporting the journal, you are not only recognizing what
Steve and I have done but also all of the wonderful things
about Am Echad. If you have not done so already, please
respond that you will be joining us at the event. If your
schedule does not permit or if the travel is too much for the
snowbirds, please consider other ways that you can support
the event. I hope to see a full ballroom.
There are many other events that will be taking place
in the coming months. Our annual film series, the musical
Shabbats and Second Seder are just a few. These are all
events that are open to the larger community so please
invite family and friends. Of course, our Torah Restoration
project is also continuing in all of its forms. Many of us
have already had the opportunity to learn with our scribe.
There will be additional opportunities to explore the Torah
and its meaning to the Jewish people, Am Echad and to
each of us individually. Look for additional information on
all of these programs.
Finally, let me thank all of you who dedicate time to
participate in meetings, come to events, bring your children to our school or join us for services. It is because of
all of you that Am Echad will continue to grow.
~ Alan J. Paskoff
Cantor’s Corner
So if you were wondering, I managed
to make it through my new grandson
Max’s bris without fainting. All went well
and since his birth on December 2, Max
has gained three pounds and grown from
18½ to 21½ inches!
I wanted to take a few moments to
reflect on an article I recently read from
the Washington Post by Lisa Miller. The
headline read “Young Jews Rebelling Against Paying
Dues.” It focused on the fact that many young people are
unwilling to deal with the dues-paying model of synagogue
membership.
Obviously, this is not a new issue. Numerous articles
have appeared over the last several years in Reform Judaism
Magazine (among many other publications) about dues
alternatives and related matters. I’m not so foolish as to get
stuck in that “quicksand” in this short missive. However, it
might be wise to look at and mull over the last few remarks
in the article as we go forward into a new year.
One Reform synagogue president quoted in the article
says that he divides the synagogue’s budget by the number
of families in the congregation and presents them with a
number. He tells them what it costs to run the institution,
and then says they should give what they can, making sure
to give their time and effort as well. He indicated that the
annual giving is “not worse, slightly better” than before the
change. This synagogue president describes the reactions of
his fellow presidents thus: “Oh boy, I’m glad that works for
you, but I would never try it. Too scary.”
The article’s author, Lisa Miller, then concludes with
the following: “What should be scarier, from the Jewish
establishment’s point of view, is the number of people perfectly content to walk away.” How many people do you
know who are unaffiliated? I’m sure your answer to that
question is the same as mine…many.
We all know that times are tough and money is tight.
We also know that there are many causes, obligations,
interests and problems that compete not only for our dollars
but also for our attention, commitment and devotion. It’s
important for synagogue communities to survive, despite
financial pressures and societal changes. It’s important for
each of us to reach out to those we know who are not synagogue members and tell them all the reasons why it’s great
to be a part of any temple community. Each of us is potentially the best advertisement for this Temple community but
we each have to be proactive! Tell your friends and neighbors all of the wonderful things that happen here. Share the
joy, camaraderie, support, fellowship, and the yiddishkeit
that are temple life. I love being a part of this community, so
let’s all spread the word and spread the wealth. I look forward to singing with you soon. With affection,
~ Cantor Jerry Korobow

Social Action
Am Echad Activists is the new name for the Social
Action Committee. First, let me
thank you for a very successful
“Chanukah Miracles” that took
place in December. To all of you
who joined in, a big thank you.
We were able to distribute presents to 15 people in 5 families. We received feedback from a few of the families that
was very heartwarming. One family said they had
never received such kindness and another thanked us for
the hopes and dreams that our presents represented to the
family for their future.
In January, a new project will be starting to support
families in need with Passover food items. Please look for
our information in the Temple e-blasts each week. Flyers
also will be going home with the children in our schools.
Boxes will be in the lobby at Temple to collect these
Passover items later this winter. Thanks for your continued
support.

Did you know that
• In Israel, Jewish women still do not have equal rights?
• In Israel, there still is no gender equality?
• In Israel, there is still no Religious Equality?
• In Israel, there IS a way we American Jews can help create a pathway to PEACE?
All it takes is for every member of Temple Am Echad
over the age of 18 to VOTE in the upcoming ARZA World
Zionist Congress Elections. Your vote will assure that
ARZA’s delegates to the World Zionist Congress represent
the values of American Reform Judaism.
These elections are the most effective way for US
Reform Jews to promote and encourage the kind of Jewish
state we all know is possible - a Jewish state that holds true
to the ideals of religious pluralism, the growth of Reform
Judaism in Israel, women’s equality in all areas of life,
democracy, and a solution to the ongoing conflict.
We need every one of our congregants over the age
of 18 to VOTE. It’s easy, and it’s fast. Please read the
URJ-provided information below.
From Jan 13, 2015 until April 30, 2015, you have the
opportunity to vote for the ARZA-Representing Reform
Judaism slate, assuring that ARZA’s delegates represent our
progressive values in the United States’ delegation to the
World Zionist Congress. Voting is easy and can be completed online or by paper ballot. All Jews over the age of 18
(as of June 30, 2015) can vote. One need not be a member
of any other organization or Jewish institution in order to
vote.
You can help shape Israel’s future by:
Voting for ARZA-Representing Reform Judaism at
www.reformjews4israel.org now through April
30th. Voting is easy and quick. Because the election itself is self-financing, the cost for voting is
$10 for those over age 30 and $5 for those 30 and
under.
For more information, please contact Andy Trevers at
516-374-1644 or [email protected] or visit the ARZA

Congratulations to Felicia Jordan Guglielmo who is becoming a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, March
14! Her proud parents, Corey & Joseph Guglielmo, and her brother, Chase, are thrilled to share this
special day. Joining in the celebration will be Felicia’s grandparents, Karen & Mickey Rosenblum
and Patti & Mike Guglielmo and her great grandmother, Florence Wasserman.
Felicia is a seventh grader at Lynbrook South Middle School. She is a very well rounded person
whether she is getting great grades in school, excelling on the sports field or hanging with her friends.
She does it all with a smile. Felicia plays soccer, basketball, volleyball and lacrosse. She is continually on the Principal’s Honor Roll at school. Felicia enjoys the summer with all her friends at Camp
Wah-Nee. She is a very special girl.
Finance
These are some very exciting
times for Reform Judaism. Our very own
David Saperstein recently was confirmed
and assumed the position of the U. S.
Ambassador for International Religious
Freedom. In doing so, he left his longtime position as the head of the Religious
Action Center. But not to fear, Rabbi
Jonah Pesner will now be leading the RAC. Rabbi Pesner
was recently named one of America’s most influential
rabbis by Newsweek. He is also a Senior VP at the URJ in
charge of Youth Engagement and a proud NFTY and Camp
Eisner alum! We should all be very proud of the leadership
we have both within and outside of the Reform movement.
Leaders like Rabbi Saperstein and Rabbi Pesner are
not born overnight. They grow and develop in an environment that embraces Jewish values and instills the importance of standing up for yourself and for our people. They
grow up in places like Am Echad. We all have an opportunity and a responsibility to cultivate the future leaders of
the Reform movement and the future leaders of America.
And we can do that right here – by continuing to invest
time and money in our religious school and our youth programming; by having a presence here as parents of those
future leaders; by leading by example and demonstrating
to our children why synagogue life is important. If you
invest in Am Echad, your children will see that and come
to share that value. And don’t get me wrong; I am not just
talking about investing money, although that is important.
I am talking about investing your time – volunteering,
attending services and programs, creating programming
that interests you and your peers. The old adage is true:
children will do as they see you doing.
Future leaders also grow in places like our URJ
camps. Whether your child loves sports, arts, science and
technology or just wants to enjoy a summer of making
friends, swimming and being with other Jewish youth, the
URJ camps have something to offer everyone. And our
child can experience all of it in an environment that, like
our synagogue, embraces Jewish values and instills the
importance of standing up for yourself and our people. We
want to make that easier for you. Last year, Am Echad provided scholarships to 10 youths who attended URJ camps
and a “NFTY in Israel” program, and we will do so again
this year to anyone attending a URJ summer program.
Now is the time to start thinking about sleepaway camp.
We will be having a representative from the URJ camps at
Temple to speak to parents and children in February. Most
of the camps fill up before the end of March. If you are
interested and/or curious, feel free to email me at
[email protected]. And yes, in full disclosure, I am an
Eisner alum and an Eisner parent!
Speaking of leaders, we will be honoring two Am
Echad leaders at our upcoming Journal Dinner Dance on
Saturday night, February 28 at the Lawrence Country
Club. Alan Paskoff, our outgoing president, has been a
leader at Am Echad for much longer than his two-year
presidency. He started many years ago as president of
TELY, the Temple Emanu-El Youth Group. Over the years
he has held numerous leadership roles in Temple life,
including as a teacher in our religious school. Steve Miller
has been, and continues to be, a leader in the fight against
hunger, coordinating the Feed the Hungry program since
its inception at Temple Sinai. Please join us for what will
surely be a fun-filled evening complete with open bar,
cocktail hour, four course dinner, DJ and dancing, and a
Viennese table! Contact the office for ticket and journal ad
information. B’Shalom,
~ Lisa Burch
Membership Minute
After reading about what’s been
going on in the world lately, antiSemitism, killings at satirical newspapers
and murders in kosher grocery stores,
I’ve been thinking about how important
it is to be a member of a synagogue.
There are so many unaffiliated Jews
in the area, all proclaiming they are
proud to be Jewish and I’m sure they are. But in my mind,
an important way to show your Jewish pride and support is
to become a member of a synagogue. It shows community,
that you stand for something with someone. Joining and
retaining membership with a synagogue supports the survival of Jews everywhere. Together there is so much we
can do, from feeding the hungry and helping the homeless
to lobbying in Washington. Even if you don’t actively participate, which we hope you do, your membership shows
the world we are strong, we stand together….Je suis Juif!

Early Childhood Center
In the Early Childhood Center, we make every
effort to incorporate all of the wonderful Jewish holidays, including the stories, traditions, music, craft
projects and, of course, food.
Our classes will have a particularly wonderful
time celebrating Tu B’Shevat, the holiday of trees, in
February. The Jewish Arbor Day marks the “New Year
of Trees.” This is the season in which the earliest
blooming trees in Israel emerge from their winter
sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle. In many of
our classes, the children will create projects of
beautiful flowering trees and speak about the many
things that trees give us. Highlighting the things trees
provide will be informative and fun. The culmination
of the celebrations will be the opportunity to taste
many of the fruits that we get from trees.
February is a short month but a big month for special birthdays in Mrs. Navasaitis/Mrs. Bolnick/Mrs.
Romanelli’s class. They will celebrate birthdays for
President Washington and President Lincoln along
with the birthday of the tree, Tu B’Shevat. After reading the story “Sammy Spider’s First Tu B’Shevat,” the
class will sing an echo song for the holiday, make treeshaped birthday hats and share fruits that grow on
trees for snack at their party for Tu B’Shevat.
In preparation, Mrs. Navasaitis asked the
children to explain what they know about trees. These
are their answers: Harry C. - I shake the leaves off the
tree if they are not falling down; Ben - Trees give me
apples to eat; Hailey - I help water the trees; Shelli - I
go in the tree’s shade; Noah - I pick apples off my tree;
Kristana - In the fall, the leaves fall off; Harry A. - I
feed the trees soil; Jamie - I decorate it and make it a
Christmas tree; Raquelle - In the winter, the tree has
no leaves; Zachary - Squirrels live in trees and save
nuts; Roxy - Trees give me bananas; Brianna - I will
find a snowflake and put it on the tree to make it beautiful; Logan - Trees fall down and get smaller;
Brandon - We make furniture from it; Jake - Apples
grow on trees, my favorite fruit.
After a dreary winter, we will be thrilled to see the
crocuses beginning to sprout, our first sign of spring.
Hopefully, March will fly by. Activities for the children will revolve around the celebration of Dr. Seuss’
birthday, the season of spring and the holiday of
Purim. The children will learn about March coming in
like a lion but going out like a lamb, bears coming out
of hibernation, birds returning north from their warm
6
weather retreats and the anticipation of
beautiful flowers blooming.
Purim will truly be the highlight of the month.
The children will be busy preparing their Shalach
Manot baskets, baking hamentashen and listening to
stories about Queen Esther, Mordecai and Haman.
The three and four-year-olds will perform songs
telling of the Purim story for their families wearing
costumes created out of pillowcases!
By March, the fall and summer registration will
be well underway. Please contact us if you have any
questions regarding registration. Happy Spring to all!

Religious & Hebrew School
In 2015, the months of February and
March bring along two holidays adored by
children. Be sure to join in our Hebrew and
Religious School celebrations for both Tu
B’Shevat and Purim!
As a people, the holiday of Tu B’Shevat
allows for us to reflect on environmental
aspects of living, especially the importance of tree planting
in Israel. Without all of the trees so generously planted by
diaspora Jews over the years, Israel might still be a swampland instead of an environmentally thriving region. This
year, our Hebrew and Religious school students, teachers
and families will be participating in a Tu B’Shevat Seder
and planting event on Sunday morning, February 1.
Teaming up with the Jewish National Fund, we will be
joined by one of JNF’s education leaders to help us gain a
closer look by participating in an environment and Israel
themed workshop! Students will be given Tree Planting
envelopes and are encouraged to participate. Please have
students submit their tree order to the office by March 1.
This is a great way to instill both a love for Israel and the
environment.
On Friday evening, February 6, students in our
Hebrew and Religious school will be participating in a
special Shabbat service both featuring and honoring our
students. Students and madrichim will be honored and
called to the bimah for their role in hunger awareness,
donating food, tzedahkah and sorting thousands of pounds
of food donations for pick up to help those in need in our
area. Be sure to be in attendance as these children and
teens are recognized!
March brings us to the holiday of Purim. Children
wait all year to dress up as their favorite character! In addition to dressing in costume for our Purim Carnival, all
students should dress in costume for our Friday, March 6
Shabbat Service featuring our Hebrew and Religious
School students. Parents are also encouraged to come in
costume! On a serious note, the holiday Purim focuses on
the heroism of an unlikely parentless girl named Esther (or
Hadassah). Figures like Esther and Mordechai truly represent the characteristics of good role models. It is important
for children to recognize the bravery of Esther and
Mordechai, and to apply the message of being true to one’s
identity. Esther’s actions not only saved herself and her
brother, but spared all Jews deemed to be destroyed by the
three-cornered hat wearing Haman.
I look forward to celebrating with you on Tu
B’Shevat, Purim and Shabbat!
~ Melanie Schoenberger
The Youth Corner
As a teacher, I’ve quickly learned that
there is no such thing as downtime in
education. It has taken me some looking
back to when I was once a member of
the youth group to realize that I was in
the same situation - there is always
something going on.
January started back after vacation and already
we had four members, Alexis Jackson, Matt Panzer,
Evan Panzer, and CJ Pritzker, who represented
ONESY at the Winter Kallah - a great experience for
students to meet other Jewish teens in the New York
area and participate in programs for a weekend.
Our teens recently created some new drawings on
the wall of the youth lounge to give it a new look,
utilizing our new “blackboard wall” that was installed
during the renovation of the lounge. Students are
beginning to prepare for our Purim event (mark your
calendars - March 1) and gearing up for the NFTY
national convention a few weeks away.
Unlike most year-round organizations, ONESY is
open to new members and event participants any time
of the year. Continue to watch eblasts for more info,
email us at [email protected], or
follow us on Twitter @ONESY_LI. We are open to
anyone in grades 8-12.

of bigotry and hatred. This film was adapted from the book with the same title by Laura Z.
Hobson, and Moss Hart wrote the screenplay. (1 hour 58 minutes)
“THE JEWISH CARDINAL” ~ April 26 at 1 PM

Gala Journal Dinner Dance
Saturday, February 28
honoring Alan Paskoff & Stephen Miller
Please join us at our Gala Journal Dinner Dance on Saturday, February 28, 2015, at the beautiful
Lawrence Yacht and Country Club to honor Alan Paskoff, our outging president and Stephen Miller, our
Coordinator of the Am Echad Feed The Hungry Program, for their years of service, and to support our major
fundraising event of the year. The evening will include a cocktail hour with live music, pass-around hors d’oeuvres, and food stations; premium open bar; 4-course dinner; Viennese dessert table; DJ and dancing.
The Temple needs your participation. Dues alone do not cover the Temple’s operating expenses. If for some
reason you cannot attend the dinner dance, at least help the Temple by returning the bottom portion of this page
with a generous ad for this year’s Souvenir Journal. Your ad will go towards continuing the innovative, stimulating programs that we continue to offer year after year.
Below you will find information about the ad sizes and prices. A 40% credit can be earned for all ads sold outside of the Temple. Ads of $375 entitle the solicitor to one no-cost dinner dance ticket; $750 entitles you to two
no-cost dinner dance tickets. Credits are non-transferable but you may use the ticket(s) you receive at your discretion. There are ad solicitation form letters for merchants and friends available in the Temple Office. Any
questions, please contact our Executive Director, Irene Drantch at the office.
We look forward to celebrating with you.

Tu B’Shevat and Purim
Long before Earth Day and the movement to protect the environment, Judaism showed its concern for nature
by establishing a New Year’s Day for trees. Trees, just like human beings, are also judged by God. On the fifteenth day of Shevat, Jews observe this Day of Judgment by planting trees.
Purim, the holiday named after a lottery, commemorates the victory of the righteous over the
wicked. It teaches Jews that miracles can happen. Yet the Megillah, which tells the whole story, is different
from any other book in the Bible because God’s name doesn’t appear in it even once. The story shows that
even when God isn’t visible, He “pulls the strings” behind the scenes to make coincidences bring about His
will. Throughout history there have been many Purims celebrated by people who had their own special stories of “behind-the-scenes miracles.”

WRJ/Sisterhood
As I write this bulletin article, I
realize that this is perhaps one of the
last I will submit as President of the
Sisterhood of Temple Am Echad! That
is a sobering thought. At the time I
began, it seemed like I had a long time
to serve but, looking back, I am astonished at how the time has flown.
When we view simchas and changes for our members
in their lives, I am reminded that life is so precious to us
and we MUST remember to take the time to reflect, rest
and regroup so that we are giving the best we can while
enjoying what we are doing for ourselves and others.
The months ahead are filled with many varied and
divergent activities and opportunities to get involved. You
do not have to sit on the Sisterhood Board to help, suggest
and contribute to the programs we have planned and we are
consistently looking for “ new” involvement to revitalize
our programs.
February brings a Board meeting on the 2nd and then
Trash to Treasures on the 8th and 9th. This is one of the
opportunities I’ve discussed. Together we can help Sandy
Marinbach and her committee if we come early that morning and help set up the sale. Then more help is needed to
keep the merchandise looking “saleable” during the afternoon and assisting where necessary. Trash to Treasures is
always an eagerly anticipated event in the Lynbrook community, distributing some much-needed objects to our
community. On February 23, we will have a fun “dessert
and program” evening planned by our Program VicePresident Susan Stein and chaired by Susan Hoffman.
These evenings are always ones that help us stay connected to one another and I urge you to put this date on your
calendar. More details will follow in the weekly e-blasts.
March is equally as busy for Sisterhood. We are planning a book review for March 16; see the ad on page 4 with
the details so you have ample time to read the book. Our
March Board meeting is the 23rd followed closely by a
wonderful and fun Game Night that is being planned by
Carole Schrager and Marilyn Morganlander. Look for the
information about it soon. Then we end March with a special event. We will be hosting a Shabbaton on the weekend
of March 27-28. We are very excited because the immediate past president of the WRJ Northeast District, Robin
Sobel, will be our guest and will facilitate a spiritual,
enlightening and educational series of workshops, all culminating on Saturday evening with a Havdalah service and
dinner. It is an honor for us to host such an important event
and I know it will be well attended and enjoyed.
So does this look like we are busy? You know we are!
In addition, we will be selling Passover candy, selling our
gift cards and planning, planning, planning so that we
remain the place to come to learn, grow, share and just
enjoy the women of Temple Am-Echad.
