DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR
POSITION
Reporting to and working in close collaboration with the Executive Director, the
Director of Development will design and execute a comprehensive development
strategy for American Bach Soloists located in San Francisco. The Development
Director will oversee and execute ongoing fundraising efforts, and recommend new
opportunities to management. S/he will manage a volunteer development team
including the Development Committee.
ORGANIZATION
Founded in 1989, American Bach Soloists mission is to engage and inspire audiences
through historically informed performances, recordings, and educational programs
that emphasize the music of the Baroque, Classical, and Early Romantic eras.
We do this by presenting an annual Subscription Series with performances in
Belvedere, Berkeley, Davis, and San Francisco. Our annual holiday performances of
Handel’s Messiah—presented each December before capacity audiences since 1992—
have become a Bay Area tradition. Each season culminates with the American Bach
Soloists Festival & Academy, held every summer in the spectacular facilities of the San
Francisco Conservatory of Music. Components of the Summer Bach Festival include
performances of major works, opera, and oratorio from the Baroque; concerts by an
annual Distinguished Artist; the Academy-in-Action Series, free Lectures and Master
Classes, and public Colloquia on a variety of topics. In addition to our regular
subscription season, the American Bach Soloists have been presented at some of the
world’s leading early music and chamber music festivals, and have appeared across
the continent, in Europe, and in Asia.
The American Bach Soloists have been recipients of major grants from Grants for the
Arts/San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund, The Clarence E. Heller Charitable Foundation, The
Charles Hosmer Morse Foundation, E. Nakamichi Foundation, The National
Endowment for the Arts, The Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation, The Bernard Osher
Foundation, The Wallis Foundation, The AT&T Foundation Matching Gifts Program,
The AXA Foundation Matching Gifts Program, Clorox Foundation, County of Marin,
and The San Francisco Foundation. An administrative staff and Board of Directors
support ABS’s activities as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization.
DESCRIPTION
Advocating for Support
• Spearheads fundraising efforts to support American Bach Soloists programs.
• Oversees annual solicitation campaigns, fundraising events, and donor
appreciation activities.
• Manages public relations efforts and opportunities to promote the
organization’s programs.
Meeting Our Budget
• Develops, implements, and monitors progress toward short- and long-term
fundraising strategy and goals.
• Cultivates relationships with current and prospective funders and supporters,
especially individual donors.
• With the Executive Director, oversees all fundraising activities including major
giving.
• Maintains oversight of grants, special events, direct mail appeals, and corporate
partnership initiatives.
• Works with the Board of Directors, including the Board Development and Gala
committees.
Maintaining Our Budget
• Participates in the planning, writing, and the reviewing of grants budgets.
• Manages expense budgets for all fundraising, public relations, and
communications efforts.
Preserving the Institution
• Serves as a public representative of the organization, including cultivating
relationships with community members and supporters in order to build
awareness of and commitment to American Bach Soloists’ work.
• Coordinates public relations outreach and opportunities
• Oversees the maintenance and expansion of the organization’s database of
supporters.
• Prepares monthly, quarterly, and annual reports as requested by the Executive
Director and Board.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Development/Fundraising: Proven success in development for a nonprofit.
Experience running campaigns and success in fundraising from multiple donor
channels.
• Project Leadership: Experience in planning, leading, and managing
development projects, including coordinating with peers to achieve desired
outcomes, and tracking and reporting on progress to managers/board of
directors.
• Entrepreneurial Spirit: Takes initiative and actively seeks to deepen current
donor relationships and to forge new ones.

Communications: Skilled in creating powerful, compelling written and oral
communications for fundraising. Ability to convey complex ideas through brief,
simple materials. Experience and credibility when presenting materials to
external audiences.
Influencing: Gets others to accept ideas by using convincing arguments,
creates a win-win situation and responds appropriately to key stakeholders.
Collaboration: Effective at working with others to reach common goals and
objectives.
Relationship Building: Skilled at establishing and cultivating strong
relationships with peers, across different levels of the organization and
externally.
Other: Bachelors degree required; masters degree preferred.
The Development Director is a full-time, exempt position. Salary is commensurate with
experience; a generous benefits package is available.
