4.) Geometric Constructions in the Common Core Curriculum Standards – Grades 9-11
Date: Tuesday - July 7, 2015 at Parsippany High School, Room 301
Presenter: Megan Langan
Teaching geometric constructions has always been a challenge. The rules are easy enough - compass, straightedge,
no measuring, but for the logistics can be a problem. With the new emphasis on geometric constructions and
problem solving skills in the CCCS, it is important that constructions are introduced in the math curriculum as a
1 problem solving technique. This workshop is designed to offer hands on instruction on the steps to teach basic
constructions in a meaningful way. Ideas will be shared on how to use constructions to introduce students to basic
reasoning and proof problems.
5.) Visualizing Problem Solving in Grades 3-5 & The Common Core
Date: Tuesday - July 7, 2015 at Clifton Public Schools
Presenter: Angelo DeMattia
Too few students are able to retain their knowledge or transfer their learning to new situations. That is why
educators lament their forgetfulness from June to September, from Friday to Monday, from 9 AM to 10 AM, etc.
This workshop will help teachers understand this difficulty and develop a more visually based lesson format. This
will help students, including SE & ELL – make an effective transition from the concrete/visual to the abstract. The
emphasis will be on applying the PAW process, a problem solving strategy: P is for Pictures, A is for Abstract, and
W is for words. Ample hands-on lessons will highlight the process that helps students attain a higher level of
achievement on the new PARCC assessments and helps teachers experience a new connection to the Common
Core Standards. Bring your laptop.
6.) Creating Fiscally Responsible Individuals through Financial Literacy – Grades 9-12
Date: Wednesday - July 8, 2015 at Clifton Public Schools
Presenter: Kathleen Harrington
Financial Literacy is the new hot topic in education. There are many resources, mostly free, that can help you plan
lessons that are relevant to your student’s lives. In this workshop you will receive a comprehensive summary of what
resources are available for grades 9-12; hands-on lessons; and ideas for how to use technology to enhance your
practice.
7.) Major Themes of Statistics in the CCSS – Grades 9-12
Date: Tuesday - August 4, 2015 at Parsippany High School, Room 301
Presenter: Angelo DeMattia
Mathematics is about ideas and not just juggling numbers and letters. Statistics (Data Analysis) should pursue that
same intent. This workshop will allow teachers and students to shift the typical emphasis from following number
recipes to a focus on statistical concepts. The bridge to those concepts will use real data, experiments, and
simulations. The embedded ideas will be explained – with pictures and words. Ample hands-on lessons and
activities will highlight the process that helps students attain a higher level of achievement on the new PARCC and
other related assessments and helps teachers experience a new connection to the Common Core Standards.
Appropriate technology and software also will be used. Please bring your laptop and graphing calculator!
8.) A Visual Approach to Algebra & the Common Core - Grades 7-9
Date: Tuesday - August 11, 2015 at Winslow Township School District
Presenter: Angelo DeMattia
Too few students can demonstrate a deep conceptual understanding of algebraic relationships. This workshop will
assist teachers in developing a more visually based lesson format. More visually based lessons create opportunities for
students – including SE & ELL – to effectively make transitions from concrete ideas/visual to abstract concepts.
The emphasis will be on applying the PAW process: P is for Pictures, A is for Algebra, and W is for words. Ample
hands-on lessons will highlight the process that helps students attain a higher level of achievement on the new
2 PARCC assessments and helps teachers experience a new connection to the Common Core Standards. Bring your
laptop and graphing calculator.
9.) Exploring Geometry Concepts using Hands-On Learning and Technology – Grades 6-10
Date: Tuesday - August 11, 2015 at Parsippany High School, Room 301
Presenter: Lisa Barragato
Are you tired of teaching your students but then they don’t remember it in a few weeks or months? Students retain
information better and understand concepts more in depth if they are allowed to develop the concepts on their own.
In this workshop teachers will learn how to use patty paper, protractors, compasses, and rulers for students to
explore triangles, parallel lines, and so much more. We will also use Internet applications, such as GeoGebra, to
explore transformations, quadrilaterals, and more. In addition we will look at some PARCC type questions that are
aligned to these topics. Please bring a laptop if possible.
10.) Visualizing Problem Solving in Grades K-2 & the Common Core
Date: Tuesday - August 11, 2015 at Berlin Borough School District
Presenter: Deborah DeMattia
Help students remember their Math concepts well beyond their elementary school years. This workshop will help
teachers to develop a more visually based lesson format that will help students, including SE & ELL – make an
effective transition from the concrete/visual to the abstract. The emphasis will be on applying the PAW process, a
problem solving strategy: P is for Pictures, A is for Abstract, and W is for Words. Ample hands-on lessons will
