Praise be to God. *THE GOSPEL LESSON John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15 (NT Pg. 104) ‘When the Advocate* comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning. But I have said these things to you so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you about them. ‘I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, “Where are you going?” But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate* will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about* sin and righteousness and judgement: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgement, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. ‘I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. This is the Word of the Lord. Praise be to God. THE SERMON When Our Hearts Are Strangely Warmed PASTORAL PRAYER *HYMN UMH No. 393 Rev. Lynn McCracken Spirit of the Living God The Sacrament of Holy Communion1 The Invitation This is the table not of the Church, but of our God. It is to be made ready for those who love God and who want to love God more. So come: You who have much faith and you who have little, you who have been here often and you who rarely attend; you who have tried to follow and you who have failed. Come not because I invite you: but because God does. It is God’s will that those who want to should meet God here. 1 Communion liturgy from Iona Community in Scotland The Story On the night in which Jesus gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” When the supper was over, Jesus took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to the disciples and said, “Drink from this, all of you, this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” Prayer of Consecration: (unison) Lord Jesus Christ, present with us now, as we do in this place what you did in an upstairs room, send down your Holy Spirit on us and on these gifts of bread and wine that they may become for us your body, healing, forgiving, and making us whole; and that we may become, for you, your body, loving and caring in the world. LORD’S PRAYER (Unison) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, forever. Amen OFFERING AND GIVING THE BREAD AND CUP At this early service, offerings can be made as you go to communion, with the offering plate in the first row pew of the church. *HYMN TFWS No. 2117 Spirit of God *CHORAL BENEDICTION by Frank J. Please introduce yourself to the ushers as a visitor and sign the guest book at the bottom of the stairs. We hope worship will be meaningful to you, and you will worship with us again. Hearing aids are available, please speak to the ushers if this would be a help to you. Those with small children may like to know that we have a nursery/toddler room downstairs as well as rocking chairs, crayons and coloring books in the rear of the sanctuary. You are welcome to walk around in the rear of the sanctuary if that is calming to your child. Today we celebrate Pentecost — when the Holy Spirit blew and blazed, spoke in many languages and created the church. Welcome — not to church but as the church! We welcome as guest organist this morning Bill Smith. Pastor Lynn and Cindy Mauch have registered for the Mosquito Stomp, June 18, during Annual Conference in Manchester, NH! The challenge to save 10,000 or more lives continues and reported gifts to this challenge already exceed $17,000! Please help us match the United Methodist Foundation of New England's challenge to match up to $50,000 for Imagine No Malaria this spring to benefit New England UMC’s Imagine No Malaria campaign. To sponsor them, there is a sign-up sheet on Pastor Lynn’s office door. Checks should be made out to “Miles for Mission/Asbury Church.” All proceeds go directly to support this campaign. Thank you! JULY 4th is another one of our church’s major fund raisers. We are without a chairperson for this event and we need your help for it to happen. Please prayerfully consider being the organizer. This is a fun and short term commitment, and you won’t be alone. We are looking for one overall organizer, plus additional people to help. We need donations of name brand soda and bottled water, cookies and other baked goods. Set-up begins at 7:30am; clean-up at 2:30pm. Please speak to a member of our lay leadership committee if you would like more information or would like to volunteer: Pastor Lynn, Joyce Fox, Sally Terry, Holly May, Craig and Tami Noke. Summer Worship Schedule - From June 28 to September 6 we will have one worship service at 9:30 a.m. each Sunday. On warm mornings we'll gather in Cargill Hall. Summer Church Office Hours - From June 28 through August, the church office will be closed Mondays and Fridays and open 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. Next Sunday is Peace with Justice Sunday – One of six United Methodist Church special Sundays. Printed envelopes will be in each bulletin giving more information on this giving opportunity. Your offering aids disciples, young and old, who are indeed changing lives and changing the world, inspired by Christ’s gospel of love and liberation. More information is included with each special envelope. Responding to the crisis in Nepal: Through May donations to UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) are being collected by the church. All monies collected go to the disaster response. If you would like to help, please make checks out to AMUMC with the notation UMCOR Advance #982450. Lord hear our prayers: A safe summer to those who have left for their summer homes; Pam Thurlow (broken wrist); Bruce Shaw; Teresa Cargill; Sandy Angell; JoAnne Jones; Dexter Street, Bill Street (uncle and cousin of Sandi Ferretti); Sally Brager; Richard Morin; Stacy Johnson’s mom; Gary Mazzie, Arthur Belisle. Those with dementia and Alzheimer’s, their caregivers and loved ones; for families dealing with divorce; children waiting to be adopted and those trying to adopt; all nursing home residents and caregivers including Don & Joyce Burrell, Dawn Cavallaro, Margaret Kelly, Doris Palmer, Flora Stanley, Virginia Ziegler. Non-perishable Food Items - Please help fill the basket by the display case! What to donate? Cans of tuna, chicken, beans, jarred peanut and almond butter are great sources of protein. There are children living in the shelters and families need baby food, packages of baby cereal and cookies, and canisters of formula. Also, diapers, snacks for kids like granola bars, packs of yogurt, milk boxes, juice boxes, and other items that your child would like to find in his or her lunchbox (that's not straight junk food); mustard, mayonnaise, ketchup, salt, pepper and other common spices. Even when people qualify for food stamps, they don't normally cover necessities like toilet paper, toothpaste and soap. Please think of the Shelter and food pantries when cleaning out your kitchen cabinet of unwanted dishes, pots and pans, glasses, etc. Children’s, teen and adult seasonal clothing and gently used bedding items are needed. See a great sale? Why not purchase one or two items for our donation basket? These collections are on-going. Please see the list of items continually needed by the shelter posted by the display case downstairs. We also have many who volunteer at Franklin Farm, Habitat for Humanity, and more. Interested? Contact Chip Thurlow, [email protected], 401-333-1235. Franklin Farm on Abbott Run Valley Road is the largest “all volunteer” garden in all of Rhode Island that grows and donates fresh vegetables to people in need! The organizing staff is already at work planning for the upcoming season. For example, the plastic "bedder" layer and irrigation hoses are already installed! Local school groups will be planting the seeds and seedlings. On Monday June 8th we will begin our Monday and Thursday tending nights from 5:30 PM to dusk. There are many tasks, some relaxing and some require more energy. You can choose how you want to be involved. Are you are interested? Please contact Chip Thurlow for more information. Wednesday Evening Bible Study - Rebekah Puleo is hosting a study of Marcus Borg’s book The God We Never Knew at 6:30PM in her home. All are welcome! Speak with her this morning or you may contact her at [email protected] Graduates – We’d like to celebrate with you! Please give us names of any AMUMC friends and members graduating high school or college, the school they will be attending in the fall or the degree receiving to the church office. Names will be published in the June Newsletter. Thank you! Elevator - Having our sanctuary on the second floor is our challenge. If you find the stairs too difficult to manage, please use our elevator. If you need help there is a call button, and we will make sure someone is there to assist you. Summer Camp - fun for Kids! Brochures are in the coatroom. Office Closed. The office will be closed Monday, May 25 in observance of Memorial Day. THE WORK OF THE CHURCH The Office Manager will be on vacation through May 20th.
