Industry Interview
Prosenjit Ganguly
Animation Designer
Industry Interview
What inspired you to get into animation
field?
First of all I didn’t get in to animation at first place,
what I was gone in was a design school. Once I got into
a design school I realized that communication design
offered animation as a specialization. I went on doing
things that gave me immense amount of joy. I wanted to
do things which loved doing, I realized if I will did this
I could do all things that make me feel happy. That was
the only thing I guess and I just followed my heart. There
are times when you want to express yourself in a certain
way and you become a misfit and career had nothing to
do with this. I studied science and I studied literature
and I the midway of studying English literature I joined
NID then I got into animation.
What was the obstacles and problem you
faced in your initially day of career?
There were 2 sets of problem or situation you can
say. One set of situation which I really faced very difficult
when I was beginning to learn that is my ignorance. I
didn’t knew anything we grew up in an atmosphere of
other fellow students who were extremely well read,
they had very deep knowledge, they had read books
which I never heard of, they have seen films, read about
film makers which I had no clue of. That was a difficult
scenario where I was nowhere in terms of qualifications
anywhere close to all these guys in my batch it was
difficult to cop up with, but I took it as a challenge. The
other difficult situation was been in a multidisciplinary
design school, where you have product design, textile
design, lots of designing happening with animation
graphics and video. I didn’t know what to go for because
I loved to designing products in my own way. Same time I
wanted to tell stories, draw and see things happening in
a weird way and tell animated stories.
4
This was another challenge for me to take a call on
that I have to go for this particular thing that was the big
challenge in fact for a year and half. Then like every other
good school gives you a challenge and that challenge is
a very happy challenge to be in. It is difficult to get in
but it is much more difficult to get out, to complete your
course. They will not let you go until and unless you are
completely qualified to be called designer otherwise
there is no other way to get out from that place. So that
was amazing, that was great challenge to encounter.
Professionally I have not been happy when I look back at
my initial professional years, I don’t think I have been
good and I don’t think I have utilized my time the way I
should have. I had lovely opportunities in which I should
have worked much harder or probably I should have had
my focus and attention in a slightly different way then
what I had. That was my initial days of my career but
thankfully over a time I kept on learning that learning
could be in different situations. Over a period of time it
helped me to understand the basic of how to approach
my work. Now I am very happy that way but I know at
least the way I should be looking at life and looking at
how to approach work.
When you take up a project what is your frame
of mind when you are working as a project
coordinator and when you are working as an
artist? How can you manage when you are
working as both as a coordinator as well as
artist?
One most important thing is that lots of students
come out and when I interact with them and I ask them
what do you want to be and the answer is I want to be
a director, they start with this. The best guys in the
world business of animation, the best directors are all
animators. The reason this works because you know
what you want before you demand out of an artist. The
director will tell you directions but if you have never
done it before how will you direct somebody. If your
artist had tried it but they could not get the results and
they ask you to help them and you don’t know how to
do it what will you do. So the best think you can do as
a student is from day 1 onwards try to make those small
little films right from your idea to the execution make
that film by yourself.
Create the idea, write it down, make a small little
thumbnails set of storyboard, design a character, and
animate them. Do the music, compose the music by
yourself, ask your friends to bring spoons, cups and pots
and compose it by yourself. Stay away from using those
digital things as a resource, don’t use reference tracks
you have. I would never love to do that, I always enjoy
creating things that I would love to do myself. So the
only advice I can give to students is from day one think
of making complete product, right from beginning till the
A passionate animation designer
end and that is eventually what you will be doing. At
every step when you are learning learn it in a way so that
at any step if you want to implement it there should not
be a point of doubt. There you will be able to follow it
in smooth in your execution just equip yourself in such a
way. Set you self in a very high standards from day one
and then guide yourself in that direction that’s the best
way to do.
22 years in this industry being an animator,
designer so you have seen many good and
bad days, so what is your message to your
students according to your experience
compiling all the knowledge you have how
do you create a spark in them?
Industry Interview
The best motivation to keep yourself going is I
am the light many people aren’t. When you wake up in
morning and you realize it is another day which means
there should no other excuse I should come in your way
to say that I am not in mood to do this because of any
sort of reason. You have to equip yourself mentally, you
have to be very much firmed yourself, very disciplined
yourself and focus single minded that I have to do that’s
it. There is something you are set on to do and you have
to do it, not anybody gets a chance to animate a story
so if I have got a chance to animate a story. Today I got
a chance to talk to you guys about a film I loved to do
and what else I need to motivate you, nothing else
is required. I am doing the best thing I loved to do
and I will keep doing that for rest of my life.

It has been 20 years since Ishwari and Ajay

As the game progresses the energy of golden

states two choices for Ajay either to kill him and become
the king of Kyrat or dine with him so he fulfill his mother
wish to scatter ashes at Lakshmana.
Shangri La:
Shangri La is a mystical land in the game and is
considered to be a place where goddess Kyra attained
Nirvana. Shangri La is marvelous; Ubisoft perfectly
creates a land of god which is now captured by Demons
and watched by Rakshasas (Monster). Shangri La features
four missions in which we play as The Great Kalinag
(Kyrati Warrior); accompanied by the ferocious Sky
Tiger. The best part of the Shangri La missions is the
language spoken by Kalinag which is Hindi; the
game successfully captures
the fundamental nature
of Indian language
and
players
The game is greatly entertaining; everything
about the game is brilliant the story line, the
visuals, the action and the total madness of the
despotic king of Kyrat Pagan Min. The game does
lack the madness and insanity as compared to Far
Cry 3, but it completes the lack in the various
aspect of the game. The game has its
own lows and highs, representing the best
the repulsive and the bad all at once of
this game. The game has ticks on what
matters the most and leaves us with loads
of terrific, beautiful and thrilling moment
to cherish for.
game review
The game play of Far Cry 4 is interactive;
it enables the player to freely roam the vicious
Kyrat. The game is primarily based on choices
which decide the future of Kyrat and Golden path.
The game features players to hunt animals and
craft their load out which helps in winning battles
against dangerous Pagans army and the players can
perform side activities which will be ultimately
awarded with either money or karma levels. The
has improved combat systems compared to previous
titles, the game features skill point system which
upgrades players fighting and resistance abilities.
The game let you craft you truly unique and mean
arsenal of weapons that will make your way out.
When your weapons leaves you cliffhanging,
animals can be one your biggest ally and greatest
danger. This introduces the brand new bait system;
where the player’s throws animal skinned flesh and
cause chaos among the enemies which uniquely
works for player’s advantage.
Built from the renowned developer
of its award-winning ancestor, Far Cry
4 brings us the most extroverted and
immersive Far Cry experience ever in an
entirely new and massive open world with
a new weapons, vehicles, wildlife and
more.

Life caught in a battle
T
his is a Japanese animated drama film, written
and directed by Isao Takahata and animated by
Studio Ghibli. The film is based ¬on a semi –
autobiographical novel Grave of The Firefiles
by Akiyuki Nosaka. The film tells a story of two
siblings, Seita and Setsuko and their desperate struggle
to survive during the final months of the Second World
War.
movie appreciation
The Story:
12
The film being with a death at the Sannomiya
Station on 21st September, 1945, after the end of World
War II. A boy, Seita, is shown dying of starvation, later
that night, having removed Seita’s body, a janitor digs
through his possessions and finds a candy tin which he
throws away into a nearby filed. The spirit of Seita’s
younger sister, Setsuko springs from the tin and is joined
by Seita’s spirit as well as a cloud of fireflies. Seita’s
spirit then begins to narrate their story accompanied by
an extended flashback of the war.
The flashback begins with a bombing raid on Kobe.
Setsuko and Seita are left to secure the house and their
belongings, allowing their mother, who suffers from a
heart condition, to reach a bomb shelter. The children
are caught off-guard as the incendiary bombs start huge
fires that quickly destroy their neighbourhood and most
of the city. Although they survive unscathed, the fires
destroy the shelter and their mother is burned and dies
soon after. Having nowhere else to go, Setsuko and
Seista move in with a distant aunty, who allows them to
stay but convinces Seita to sell his mother’s kimonos for
rice. While living with their relatives, Seita goes out to
retrieve supplies he had buried before the bombing. He
gives them all to his aunty, but hides a small tin of Sakuma
fruit drops, which becomes a recurrent icon throughout
the film. Their aunt continues to shelter them, but as
food rations continue to shrink, she becomes increasingly
resentful and openly remarks on how they do nothing to
earn the food she cook.
Seita and Setsuko finally decide to leave and move
into an abandoned bomb shelter, where they release
fireflies into the shelter for light at the night. The next
day, Setsuko is horrified to find that the insects have all
died. She buries them all in a grave, asking why they
had to die, and why her mother had to die. What began
as a new lease on life grows grim as they run out of
rice, forcing Seita to steal from local farmers and loot
homes during air raids. When he is caught, he realizes
his desperation and takes an increasingly-ill Setsuko
to a doctor, who informs him that Setsuko is suffering
from malnutrition but offers no help. In a panic, Seita
withdraws all the money remaining in their mother’s
bank account, but as he leaves the bank, he becomes
distraught when he learns from a nearby crowd that
Japan has surrendered unconditionally to the Allied
Powers. He also learns that his father, a captain in the
Imperial Japanese Navy, is probably dead, since nearly
all of Japan’s navy is now at the bottom of the ocean.
He returns to the shelter with a large quantity of food,
only to find a dying Setsuko hallucinating. Seita hurries to

cook, but she dies soon after. Seita cremates Setsuko,
and puts her ashes in the fruit tin, which he carries
along with his father’s photograph, until his own
death from malnutrition in Sannomiya Station a
few weeks later.

movie appreciation
The film was one the most talked
movie of that era and it was an antiwar movie, which actually showed the
devastation of not only city but livestock
and the lives caught in the act of the war
as well. The film not even for one frame
made us realise that this is an animated
film. The emotion and message conveyed
by the characters was very beautifully
portrayed. The film although is very sad but
it does has small ups and downs similarly what
real life would go through during that situation.
Isao Takahata Sir has amazingly directed each
and every shot of the movie. It is a visual treat
to watch such an amazing movie. The movie does
not promote avoiding wars or stopping war but it
documents life during war. The entire beauty of this
movies lies within the characters and the real life like
feel to them.

for the
betterment of students keeps workshop and
master classes by industry professionals so
that students can grow creatively and know
what’s happening in industry .But like from
years keeping workshop and master classes arena andheri
from this year have started a boot camp series for like
minded students. Boot camp series is a series where only
those individuals or students can take part in workshop
those are needed or those who want to come and attend
workshop on there own will.
The living animation workshop was the second
workshop which was conducted under boot camp series which
was taken by prosenjit Ganguly Sir(Animation designer), a
wholly passionate man. The workshop was conducted on 14
and 15 January,2015,but the students were trained from last 4
weeks for workshop by faculty team. students were give a lot
of assignment before the workshop so that they could be well
experienced and well knowledged and be ready for workshop.
The two day workshop digged deep in creative foundation
and students were able to compose there own story and made
it to come alive. Students were packed with knowledge after
knowledge. Having 20 years in industry experience he had
immense knowledge to share with fellow student. Being an
professional he told the students that never stop learning, we
can learn at any stage of life. He thought students that we all
are story, and everyone can create a great story of there own,
we just have look deep inside us.
Among many things that he had to share one thing that
he told student in workshop was that whatever work you do it
whole-heartily and with great passion, put your whole heart
into it. He gave students some task to do during workshop, while
giving task he told students that don’t think one way only, open
your mind and think what different, what fresh ,what original
idea can come in your mind. He was more focused to be deeply
in one thing whatever task you are doing.
His style of presenting the thoughts to students was
all a different way. He sat with students and elucidate all the
quires of students. Students didn’t get bored though workshop
was for whole days ,in fact at end they wanted to continue the
workshop for more few days.
Lastly, all learnt a lot from by prosenjit Ganguly sir and
did something new, unique, creative at end of session.

Know your faculty
This section tells you each and every possible thing you want to know
about our loved faculty Rishikesh Gaikwad
How you started your journey in this field?
I was always curious about it from childhood. Like
every other child I was always a cartoon lover, I was more
interested in cartoon than my studies. I was a commerce
student as I said I was always interested in doing some
artistic things but due to several reasons I was not able to
do those things at that time. I didn’t know what actually
animation and graphics is so I have to research about it
a lot. I have done lot of RND about it and then I finally
came to this field, we can say it was a turning point of
my life which turning me from commerce to animation.
How was your journey up till now?
I was average in my studies but I was always good in
sports, drawing and crafts etc. many people encouraged
me to choose this field. As I was already having such sort
of interest that I have to get in to this career, so I got
into it.
Any suggestions that you would like to give
to our students and what do you expect
form students?
I will suggest them to be focused and be
18
determined with your work. Passion towards your work
is the most important thing one should always go with,
do whatever you are passionate with. Keep researching
new things which are in market. Do not copy the work
but learn something from those works. It is fun loving
field and this is the only field which gives you so much
freedom. You should watch movies, artworks, animation,
advertisement, listen music or learn things from nature.
On other fields of doctors, engineers or any other field
will give chance to explore in this manner. What you
have to do is just follow it. Don’t be over confident, it
can take you down. Be humble and honest with peoples
because that makes your work reflect. Most of the time
you spend your time with your colleagues and fallow
students rather than your family so that is the time learn
things from them and teach them what you know. Share
your knowledge with them and explore what is happening
in the outer world not only in your field but also in other
field if you keep knowledge about everything it will be
more advantageous. Keep on researching about new
things, keep on reading books. I want my students to
work at their best when they do some good work I might
give them a treat. I always want them to go one step
ahead everytime.

The two trailers which are out have created loads

definite selling point for Avengers 2 it is none other than
Hulk going up against Iron Man. Everything on the film, be
it the promotional images or the trailers, has showcased
Iron Man fighting Hulk in his massive Hulk buster armour.
The quick shots of the scene is enough to get any fan
excited, and depending how the scene would be ; this
sequence could be one of the best superhero fights to
grace the silver screen.
