“There is nothing more important than exactly what is happening
right here this weekend: educators coming together to share best
practices.” So said Judy Seltz, ASCD Executive Director, as she
greeted Welcome Reception attendees and officially kicked off
the conference on Friday evening.

trucks, fun games, and fantastical representatives from Houston’s thriving art car scene.

classes of Sam and Nancy Jones in 2008 and
maintained by Mark and Sherri Garrett, and

Blair, delighted attendees, who posed for
pictures with the fanciful art pieces.

professional learning using our
digital products. With this model,
ASCD Faculty are able to work
with educators face to face and
provide them with ongoing online
support and resources. In the
end, this approach supports the
development of a job-embedded
community of practice for all.

Yesterday, about 50 students and faculty advisors
from ASCD’s Student Chapter program traveled
to Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School
District (ISD) in Harris County, Tex., for a
unique professional development opportunity.
The ASCD student members visited a new
school, David Anthony Middle School, and
met with teachers and administrators to see
firsthand an innovative school environment and
learn more about educating students in Texas.

It is when I have a chance to be at a conference with all

room together, face to face, leads to great times full of
laughter and learning.
Why are you an ASCD member?
I am an ASCD member to connect to a community
of dedicated professionals, to learn and grow as an
educator and as an education leader, and to be part of a
movement to systematically improve education.

Student Chapter members see how innovative classroom
design promotes transparency in learning.
Later, the students visited the Berry Center, a
central community facility in Cypress-Fairbanks
ISD featuring a theater and a football stadium that
seats 11,000, and got a behind-the-scenes look at
how a large district operates. While at the Berry
Center, the participants heard from Cy-Hope, a
nonprofit community group that helps at-risk
students in the district, about the opportunities
they offer. The meeting gave student members
a new lens on partnerships between community
programs and schools.
“The whole day was very motivating,” said Renee
Morrissette from the Southern New Hampshire
University chapter. “It was great to hear from the
principal at the middle school. She helped me find
what I want to look for in a school when I'm looking for a job.”

Whole Child
Network of
Schools:
Success in School
Improvement
In 2012, ASCD selected 10 schools from a nationwide pool
of 142 applicants to participate in a three-year research
effort to evaluate implementation of the ASCD Whole Child
approach to education. The Whole Child Network (WCN),
as this initiative is known, provides organization and
support for schools dedicated to ensuring that each student
is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged—the
five tenets of the ASCD Whole Child approach.
By the start of the second year of implementation, the WCN school teams,
comprising building leadership and school staff, began to see how this approach
influenced improvement in their schools, districts, and communities. Although
all the schools in the network showed progress from year one to year two, their
overall progress breaks down into two distinct categories. Five of the schools are
poised to achieve overall school improvement sustainability, while the remaining
four schools are poised for sustainability within one or two of the Whole Child
tenets or within one or more of the school improvement components. (Note that
one school elected to leave the program in 2013.)

systems more fully and accurately support our students’ long-term success?

You show up at a session and find it already filled
beyond the room’s capacity. You’re uncomfortable
but willing to stand for an hour to hear this speaker.
A moment later, someone wearing a volunteer badge
asks you to leave the room. What’s up with that, you
wonder. Sound familiar?
What’s up is the regulation in most public venues
that gives the fire marshal the authority to close down
sessions that are filled beyond designated room
capacity. ASCD staff members work to ensure that
sessions are in appropriately sized rooms, but we’re
sometimes taken by surprise. If that happens, please
be kind to the volunteer and understand that safety
must come first. We offer many concurrent sessions,
and none of the sessions are ticketed, so please
choose another. We apologize for the inconvenience.

In the end, Seltz reminded attendees
that whatever challenges they face,
ASCD is here to help. “Whatever
roadblocks may be cluttering your way
forward, we’re here to help you remove
them or negotiate around them. That’s
what this conference is all about:
