Write for ASCD
“There is nothing more important than exactly what is happening
right here this weekend: educators coming together to share best
practices.” So said Judy Seltz, ASCD Executive Director, as she
greeted Welcome Reception attendees and officially kicked off
the conference on Friday evening.
Sponsored by Discovery Education, the
festivities featured fare from local food
trucks, fun games, and fantastical representatives from Houston’s thriving art car scene.
Percy Peacock, originally created by the art
classes of Sam and Nancy Jones in 2008 and
maintained by Mark and Sherri Garrett, and
A Little Bit of Nonsense, designed by Randy
Blair, delighted attendees, who posed for
pictures with the fanciful art pieces.

“The ASCD Annual Conference and Exhibit
Show is one of education’s most valuable
professional development events,” said Carol
Wetzel, senior director, Discovery Education.
“Discovery Education is pleased to return
for the second year in a row as a lead sponsor of this incredible gathering of educators
dedicated to supporting the success of each
learner. We look forward to the next three
days of professional development here in
Houston, and invite conference participants
to join us in our Model Classroom, located
in Level 3, Room 360BE, to see the future of
education.”
The event gave those gathered a chance to
mingle and unwind before the busy weekend of learning to come. Seltz challenged
attendees to connect with one another,
share stories, and find ways to reinvent and
reinvigorate their practice. “You have more
than 300 concurrent sessions and three
general sessions to attend in the next few
days. I encourage you to savor every minute
of them. I believe that taking the time to hear

Making a
Difference
with ASCD’s Professional Learning Services
ASCD recognizes that enhancing classroom and
school practices so that there is growth in student
learning is the responsibility of every educator.
We also understand that this is an immense and
sometimes challenging responsibility to carry out.
That’s why ASCD’s Professional Learning Services
offer a range of customizable professional development options to build teacher capacity and,
ultimately, enhance student learning.
Based on a teacher leader model,
our services are designed to help
teacher leaders
• Equip other teachers with the
knowledge and tools they need to
enhance student achievement.
lum, assessment, and instructional
practices identified as most needed
by districts and school leaders.
These services expand the role of
school leadership by helping teacher
leaders and teachers partner with
district and school administrators to
serve as change agents and visionaries who can influence the ongoing
professional learning and effectiveness of their colleagues.
ASCD’s Professional Learning Services support the standards, curricu-

school administrators, teacherleader teams, and teachers can
develop expertise in instructional
practices using a variety of
methods, including workshops
led by ASCD Faculty members,
standards-alignment services,
and capacity-building coaching.
“The hallmark of their work lies
in the customized training, ongoing support, follow up, and follow
through that is their standard,”
according to Glenda Horner,
director of staff development for
Cypress-Fairbanks Independent
School District in Houston. “The
ASCD faculty members working
with our district have acted as
a bridge between learning and
application, lessening the gap
between the two and facilitating
implementation.”
ASCD’s approach uses a blended
professional learning model that
integrates both virtual and on-site
professional learning using our
digital products. With this model,
ASCD Faculty are able to work
with educators face to face and
provide them with ongoing online
support and resources. In the
end, this approach supports the
development of a job-embedded
community of practice for all.

Student Chapter
Members
Get Schooled
Yesterday, about 50 students and faculty advisors
from ASCD’s Student Chapter program traveled
to Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School
District (ISD) in Harris County, Tex., for a
unique professional development opportunity.
The ASCD student members visited a new
school, David Anthony Middle School, and
met with teachers and administrators to see
firsthand an innovative school environment and
learn more about educating students in Texas.
*ASCD In-Dues Professional Liability Insurance Plan for Premium members is not provided for retired members. All insurance is for U.S. residents only.
Because of ASCD...
We’re always looking for new ways to insert ASCD voices
into our conversations. With this in mind, we’ve asked a
set of questions to ASCD members, who come from all
walks of life and are happy to share their stories.
What are your favorite ASCD resources,
publications, solutions, or events, and why?
Some of my favorite ASCD resources are
• .Teaching with Poverty in Mind by Eric Jensen.
Meet Krista Rundell, ASCD Member and
Emerging Leader
• Closing the Achievement Gap: A Vision for
Changing Beliefs and Practices, 2nd edition by
Belinda Williams.
Complete this sentence: “Because of
ASCD...”
• Inservice blog posts written by fellow emerging
leaders.
I have been connected to amazing friends who are
as passionate as I am about teaching, learning, and
affecting positive change in our educational system to
best benefit students.
• T he L2L Conference each summer and the Annual
Conference in the spring.
What is your favorite ASCD moment?
My favorite ASCD moment is more than a moment.
It is when I have a chance to be at a conference with all
my emerging leader friends. Since we live around the
world, we usually communicate via Twitter. To be in a
room together, face to face, leads to great times full of
laughter and learning.
Why are you an ASCD member?
I am an ASCD member to connect to a community
of dedicated professionals, to learn and grow as an
educator and as an education leader, and to be part of a
movement to systematically improve education.
Read more stories on Inservice at
http://inservice.ascd.org. Explore ASCD
membership at www.ascd.org/learnmore.
Student Chapter members see how innovative classroom
design promotes transparency in learning.
Later, the students visited the Berry Center, a
central community facility in Cypress-Fairbanks
ISD featuring a theater and a football stadium that
seats 11,000, and got a behind-the-scenes look at
how a large district operates. While at the Berry
Center, the participants heard from Cy-Hope, a
nonprofit community group that helps at-risk
students in the district, about the opportunities
they offer. The meeting gave student members
a new lens on partnerships between community
programs and schools.
“The whole day was very motivating,” said Renee
Morrissette from the Southern New Hampshire
University chapter. “It was great to hear from the
principal at the middle school. She helped me find
what I want to look for in a school when I'm looking for a job.”

50 university programs for preservice teachers
and masters candidates. Learn more, including

Whole Child
Network of
Schools:
Success in School
Improvement
In 2012, ASCD selected 10 schools from a nationwide pool
of 142 applicants to participate in a three-year research
effort to evaluate implementation of the ASCD Whole Child
approach to education. The Whole Child Network (WCN),
as this initiative is known, provides organization and
support for schools dedicated to ensuring that each student
is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged—the
five tenets of the ASCD Whole Child approach.
By the start of the second year of implementation, the WCN school teams,
comprising building leadership and school staff, began to see how this approach
influenced improvement in their schools, districts, and communities. Although
all the schools in the network showed progress from year one to year two, their
overall progress breaks down into two distinct categories. Five of the schools are
poised to achieve overall school improvement sustainability, while the remaining
four schools are poised for sustainability within one or two of the Whole Child
tenets or within one or more of the school improvement components. (Note that
one school elected to leave the program in 2013.)

ASCD Forum on
Accountability Gives
Voice to
Educators
Across the globe, educators are facing a complex issue: How can accountability
systems more fully and accurately support our students’ long-term success?
It is time for a new generation of accountability that fully reflects a more
comprehensive definition of student success, accurately measures student
learning, and more systematically tracks educators’ efforts to engage and
support learners.
The ASCD Forum was developed as an avenue to engage educators in
conversations on topics of significance to the organization and education as
a whole and as a means to discuss just what is essential to the way educators
learn, teach, and lead. The ASCD Forum on next-generation accountability
systems, which began February 2 on ASCD EDge® and will last through April
15, is soliciting educator perspectives on this important topic.
Join us Sunday morning for a face-to-face session of the ASCD Forum that
will use both live and virtual participation from the audience to continue the
conversation about next-generation accountability.

FIT Teaching™: An Introduction to
the Framework for Intentional and
Targeted Teaching
How can educators blend purposeful
learning, gradual release of responsibility, and formative assessment into
a system that provides high-quality
instruction in every classroom?
The FIT Teaching (Framework for Intentional and Targeted Teaching™) tool kit is
based on the work of Douglas Fisher and
Nancy Frey. The four essential elements
of the FIT Teaching strategy provide
teachers with the tools and skills they
need to ensure high-quality teaching and
learning in every classroom. Learn how
the four components of the tool kit—culture of achievement, purposeful learning,
gradual release of responsibility, and formative assessment—are connected and
provide a framework to enhance teacher
effectiveness and student achievement.
Disrupting Poverty: Turning HighPoverty Schools into High-Performing
Schools
What does it take to disrupt poverty’s
adverse influence on student learning?
This institute, based on the best-selling
ASCD book Turning High-Poverty
Schools into High-Performing Schools
by William Parrett and Kathleen Budge,
will provide participants with a framework for collaborative action. Parrett
and Budge will share the lessons they've
learned from their nearly three decades
of working with high-poverty, highperforming schools. Learn how teachers,
principals, central office personnel, and
others can work from various vantage
points to create cultures of high expectations and support for all learners—
students and adults alike.
Differentiated Instruction and the
New Standards: Helping All Learners
Succeed with Challenging Content
How can educators help ensure that all
children, regardless of their abilities,
can engage with rigorous content found
in the new standards?
Whether your district has adopted
the Common Core State Standards or
another set of new standards, the chal-
lenge for teachers is how to help their
students, who are certainly not standardized, succeed. This institute will
present the key principles and practices
of curriculum design and differentiation
that educators at every level can learn
to support maximum student growth
for a broad range of learners. Explore
the concept of “teaching up” to develop
learning targets; design lessons that
challenge and support every learner;
and leverage formative assessment data
to help plan, guide, scaffold, and extend
the instruction of rigorous content.
Building Teachers’ Capacity for
Success: A Collaborative Approach
for Coaches and School Leaders
How can principals, teacher leaders,
and coaches work together to ensure
that all teachers are continually
improving their effectiveness?
In this institute, district and
site-based administrators and
instructional coaches will learn the
model of strengths-based school
improvement to build the capacity
of teachers and teacher leaders,
increase every teacher’s effectiveness
in the classroom, and deepen each
teacher’s self-reflection skills. Based
on the ASCD book Building Teachers’
Capacity for Success by Pete Hall and
Alisa Simeral, this institute will provide
participants with a differentiated

beyond the room’s capacity. You’re uncomfortable
but willing to stand for an hour to hear this speaker.
A moment later, someone wearing a volunteer badge
asks you to leave the room. What’s up with that, you
wonder. Sound familiar?
What’s up is the regulation in most public venues
that gives the fire marshal the authority to close down
sessions that are filled beyond designated room
capacity. ASCD staff members work to ensure that
sessions are in appropriately sized rooms, but we’re
sometimes taken by surprise. If that happens, please
be kind to the volunteer and understand that safety
must come first. We offer many concurrent sessions,
and none of the sessions are ticketed, so please
choose another. We apologize for the inconvenience.
ASCD Wants
Your Feedback
We want to hear from you! What are your challenges?
What resources do you need to do your job? ASCD
wants to help you to solve problems; so, tell us what
you need. Come to the ASCD Research Row, located
in the ASCD Center, to take an interactive survey and
receive a special gift.
Conference Evaluations
Session participants can evaluate each session’s
presenters and materials directly via the Annual
Conference App (available at www.ascd.org/acapp)
or online at www.ascd.org/evaluations. You will
also receive an e-mail reminder at the end of each
day regarding the evaluations. We greatly appreciate
your feedback.
