Hi Folks
I enjoyed a great pre match lunch in Dolphin RFC with Joe Schmidt entertaining the crowd right up to kick off,
midway through Irelands Six Nations campaign. Old friends from the past included former UCC rugby players
Da e Horgan, De lan O’Lear and the pilot, Dolphin Old Bo s Da e Po ero , Eoin M Carth and Ken O’‘eill
livened things up with an evening darts challenge. Cork Con put two great events on in mid-March, their
annual Cheltenham Da and Stri tl Con Dan ing’ oth e ents pro ed to e assi el popular. As we move
towards Easter, trade should pick up as the weather improves which augurs well for the pub sector.
Best Wishes
John
Johnny Ma ’s Rug y Angle:
Moving towards the end of the season, I must mention Sundays Well under Sixteens who have had three
great wins in the pan knockout competition over Cork Con, Bandon RFC and Kanturk. Stars on this Sundays
Well outh side in lude Luke O’Callaghan in the for ards and Mi hael O’Sulli an at full a k and the team are
managed by Brian Loughrey and coached by Ken Arigho and Ricky Kelly. Dolphin continue to fight for survival
in Division 1A and a recent away victory over Clontarf boosted morale. Concerning Munster victories over
Cardiff and Glasgow make Irish Independent Park a happy hunting ground and victory in the pro 12
competition is still a possibility. Highfield have been crowned champions of Division 2B and their strength in
depth makes promotion next season an achievable target. Sunda s Well Seniors s ored ragging rights’ in
their Derby win over Midleton and promotion may well be decided on April 11th against Highfield.
Finally I must mention Ireland and the fantastic championship victory and hats off to Joe Schmidt.
Cheltenham Trip
I made this trip to Cheltenham on Friday (Gold Cup night) as I was unavailable for the race meeting due to work
commitments (work the curse of the drinking classes). Having backed AP McCoy in a small way my losses were not
significant. Despite this a room in Cheltenham during festival week can go as high as £300 per night. Fortunately there
are cheaper alternatives such as the YMCA (£80) and the Bell Inn (£50). After check in I made my way to the Suffolk
Ar s here a trio pu ped out lassi s su h as Fat Botto ed Girls and A arillo . I o ed onto the E outh Ar s
where the Fields Of Athenr
as eing sung along to a peak apped t eed ro d ho see ed to e part of the
horse set. Finall , T ent is the night lu to get into ith a prin ess, a for er England rug pla er and a fa ous
jockey Ruby all bopping along to the Saw Doctors.

Moniques Recipe – Roast lamb with spring herb crumbs
1. Heat oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 3. For the lamb, scatter the
vegetables, bay leaves and a few rosemary sprigs into a large
roasting tin and drizzle with the olive oil. Use a sharp knife to
make little slits all over the lamb. Poke a slice of garlic and a
small sprig of rosemary into each one. Sit the lamb on top of
the veg in the roasting tin, add a splash of wine, then cook for
2 hrs if you like it pink, or 2 hrs 15 mins for cooked through.
Remove from the oven, transfer to a board and cover with
foil, then rest for 45 mins-1 hr.
2. To make the gravy, pour off most of the fat from the tin but
leave the veg and any meat juices. Place the tin on the heat
to caramelise the veg, then stir in the flour and cook to a
paste. Gradually stir in the wine, cook for a min, then stir in
the stock and simmer until you have a tasty gravy. Push the
gravy through a sieve into a small pan and keep warm.
3. Turn oven up to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. For the crumbs, blitz
everything in a food processor and scatter over a tray. Bake in
the oven for 10-15 mins until crisp, then re-blitz or break up
with your fingers to crumbs again. These can be made in
advance and kept in an airtight container for 2 days. Serve
the lamb carved into slices, sprinkled with crumbs and a jug
of gravy alongside.

Blast From The Past
Billy Cronin was a highly respected number eight for Garryowen and Sundays Well RFC.
Q. What are your memories of your early rugby career?
A. I started playing with Sundays Well aged fifteen, Michael Barry senior collected me in Mallow with six lads
from Christians and six from Pres. Mick Barry recommended to my father that I join Rockwell College for fifth
and sixth year despite my strong Gaelic football background. I subsequently received a ban from the GAA as I
become more prominent in Rugby getting selected for Munster schoolboys. I won the cup in 1970 with
Rockwell but was defeated in the semi-final in my last year.
Q. When did you get your first senior break?
A. I joined UCC and ended up on the senior team partnering Castleisland man Moss Keane in the second row.
Moss dro e e to y first at h i a Fiat 500 ith a y UCC hurlers a d asket allers pa ked i to the
same car. We won the Munster senior league in 1972/73 and I also played championship GAA as the ban was
now lifted.
Q. What were the highlights of your playing career?
A. I got selected for Munster Juniors while in UCC but in a variety of positions, numbers 3,5,8. In 1975, I got
selected for the Senior Munster XV while playing number 8 for Garryowen. We kept it very tight in the 1979
cup final against Young Munster (winning 3-0 . I asked Pat Whela
he ould I lea e the all out of the

Q. Who was your most difficult opponent?
A. Colm Tucker was my most difficult opponent and Christy Cantillionn was difficult to contain when playing with UCC.
In Gaelic Football John Meyler of St. Finbarres was a formidable opponent when we wont the 1985 Final beating St.
Finbarr s (Aravale Rovers).
Q. Have you been involved in the game since you stopped playing?
A. My two sons have emerged as prominent players. Jerry Cronin propped for Ulster in the Heineken Cup
after emerging from the successful Ballinahynch team coached by Brian McLaughlan. My other son Sam
Cro i s ru half for Clo tarf has aptai ed Irish lu s. I o ed Mo a s Sheeha s pu i Mallo a d e
received a phone call from Shannon Airport one day (around 1980) for Sundays Well players to leave urgently
for their tour flight to the USA. The pub was latterly adapted by Garryowen and Young Munster before
Mallow was bypassed.
