INTRODUCTION
We are delighted to present Great Southern Grammar’s fourth annual Literature
Festival for children, Southern Sea of Words.
Over the years the festival, open to all schoolchildren of the Great Southern
region, has grown considerably and is now established as Southern Sea of Words.
We greatly appreciated the support of the City of Albany and the Great
Southern Grammar Parents’ and Friends’ Association in bringing the festival to
you. We are indebted to the authors who inspire the students of the schools
that visit the festival.
I extend a sincere thank you to Mrs Karen Bradbury and the Library team at GSG
which has worked with great purpose to develop a truly outstanding festival for
the children and the community.

WELCOME
Great Southern Grammar Library staff are thrilled to present the annual
Children’s Literature Festival, Southern Sea of Words. This is the fourth year that
the festival has run in this format, with schools within the Great Southern region
invited to participate.
There are many highlights of the festival this year, but one that we are particularly
excited about is the boat cruise to Breaksea Island with local author of The
Lighthouse Girl, Dianne Wolfer. We have seven authors attending, both western
and eastern states-based, who will share with us their love of children’s literature,
their passion for illustrating and their skills of writing, over the two day festival.
We hope you enjoy the programme of sessions we have developed this year and
look forward to you helping us to celebrate a shared loved of children’s literature.

AUTHOR & ILLUSTRATOR
PROFILES
James Foley is a children’s author and illustrator. He is an
ambassador for Books In Homes and Room To Read Australia, and
is the current Illustrator/Coordinator for SCBWI Australia West.
Gabriel Evans has illustrated over 15 books including Annie’s
Snails (Walker Books, 2014) and Roses are Blue (Walker Books,
2014). He has written and illustrated a new series, Woodland
Whiskers, through Five Mile Press that was released in July 2014.
He runs art and illustration workshops through schools, libraries
and events.
Deb Fitzpatrick lives and works in Fremantle, WA. She has
a Master of Arts (Creative Writing degree) from UWA and
occasionally teaches creative writing and editing at Curtin
University. Deb is the author of four novels and is publishing
another this year.

Jon Doust is local identity known for his interesting beanies and
socks, ability to ride a scooter and, of course, his ability to write and
entertain people. He has written a number of books for adults and
has co-authored many for children. He is currently working on a new
book which he will share during Southern Sea of Words.
Jacqueline Harvey is the author of the bestselling Alice-Miranda
and Clementine Rose series. She was a teacher for many years
at girls’ boarding schools and is now a full-time writer living in
Sydney. She will join us for a Skype session on Thursday.
Paul Stafford is the author of 14 books for YA readers. His
first series of short stories (eight books) were published under
the Pants on Fire imprint aimed specifically at reluctant boys.
Paul’s writing workshops in NSW high schools target Year Seven
and Eight disengaged boys, and he delivers video conference
programmes from the Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum.
Dianne Wolfer
Dianne is a well known Albany-based author of 15 books for
teenagers and young readers. Her acclaimed novel Lighthouse
Girl has become well known for its connection to Albany and the
departure of ships to WWI. Her well known book, Granny Grommet
and Me, is inspired by surfing grandmas at Middleton Beach.
