SENIORS CARE - UBC Applied Science Professional Programs

PREPARED TO CARE
Seniors are expected to account for nearly
one-quarter of British Columbia’s population
by 2036, and the proportion of seniors
aged 85 and older is accelerating rapidly.
These demographic trends underscore
increasing demand for health professionals
equipped with sector-relevant, crossdisciplinary technical skills to help create
the future of seniors health care. UBC’s
new Master of Health Leadership and
Policy in Seniors Care program is designed
to develop health care specialists who are
prepared to improve patient outcomes
and foster the well-being of seniors, in both
community and institutional contexts.
“There is such a demand for professionals with this knowledge
and skill set—they will have an opportunity to shape the future
of Seniors Care. I wish such a program was available when
I was working towards taking on a leadership role in this field.”

SENIORS
CARE
The UBC Master of Health Leadership and Policy (MHLP) in Seniors Care is designed
to provide participants with a graduate-level degree that will enable them to lead, design
and deliver comprehensive care and services for seniors in a range of community and
institutional settings. Graduates will gain in-depth knowledge about the unique health
of seniors, seniors care, and business operations in seniors care facilities. The technical
and leadership knowledge and skills that participants acquire can be applied in public
sector, private sector and non-profit facilities.
Offered by the UBC School of Nursing, this unique program will impart in-depth technical
knowledge as well as the practical, hands-on leadership skills required for graduates to
lead and oversee service provision.
ONE YEAR, INTENSIVE STUDY, FACE TO FACE
Core program content is focused on the development of care philosophies and strategies,
understanding and applying principles of environmental gerontology, using conceptual and analytical
tools, conducting relevant quality assurance research, and learning how to manage operations
inside a seniors facility consistent with best practices and aspirational goals.
The UBC Master of Health Leadership and Policy in Seniors Care is offered on a January
through December calendar year. It is designed with a 60% focus on technical specialization
and 40% on a leadership platform designed to enhance the business, communication and
people skills of program participants.
The program maintains a strong focus on organizational models of practice that promote ethical,
equitable and socially sustainable policies and practices in seniors care.
The program is designed for professionals with an undergraduate credential in health care or
a related field (Nursing, Social Work, Occupational or Physical Therapy, Dietetics) and three
years of relevant experience, with at least one year in Seniors Care.
Curriculum follows the Industry Value Chain
Program participants benefit from a variety of content delivery models—including seminars,
conferences and other innovative teaching strategies. Interaction between students and
industry partners is actively encouraged to reinforce real-world learning opportunities.
