Arbutus Arts Festival
WELCOME!
It’s that time of year again, where everyone in our local community, as well as surrounding areas, looks forward to the Arbutus
Arts Festival. This is the 42nd year for this long-standing event which continues to grow each year.
This year, we will be adding a few new things to the festival and hope you enjoy them. We plan to expand our Car Show, which
has become a family day outing wherein the whole family has something to draw their attention. The Children’s Corner will bring
back the popular Electric Train and Ponies but will also add a few new rides. Be sure to check out the Crayon Playland Moon
Bounce, Sports Theme Moon Bounce and the Ultimate Inflatable Obstacle Course! These are all new this year and each one is
geared to a specific age group to have something for all the children.
Major Company will once again be returning to entertain the crowd throughout the day. I’m sure you will find exciting new
crafters as you stroll along. Be sure to check out the new location for the funnel cake stand which will be on the other side of
Stevens Avenue, next to Sorrentos. Grab a bite to eat from the many food vendors and enjoy a beer with your friends and have
some laughs.
I’m happy to say that the Arbutus Arts Festival won an award for Baltimore County Best Community Event in 2014. What an
honor! Our committee and many volunteers should be proud of all the time and effort they put into making an enjoyable day
for everyone. Winning this award was a wonderful surprise and a great way to say “Thank You” to everyone. It’s not only the
Committee and volunteers, but it’s all of you who come back each year to support us. This event wouldn’t be so successful
without everyone coming together.
We look forward to seeing everyone, and we’re hoping for sunshine! Have an enjoyable day!

WELCOME TO ARBUTUS!
Hi,
I’m Joey Ambrose and I’d like to welcome you to the Arbutus Arts Festival. Last year, we received the Best Community Festival Award and we are hoping to continue our success. We are always looking for suggestions to help
us grow and make the Arbutus Arts Festival a positive experience for the entire community.
We hope you enjoy the day with your family and friends and thanks for participating in a wonderful event.
Joey Ambrose
Director, Arbutus Arts Festival 2015
As President of the Arbutus Business and Professional Association,
I would like to say “Welcome to Arbutus!” We are excited to present our 42nd Annual Art’s Festival. You will
find unique handmade items, of all kinds, created by our many wonderful crafters. We invite you to visit our
food stands sponsored by local community groups and organizations. And of course, for the children, we
have an entire section, The Children’s Corner, devoted especially to them. Cruz by the Car Show and check
out the vehicles of yesteryear. Meet and greet the members of the Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department and
check out a Fire Truck. Or, if you just want to relax while others shop, stop by the Beer Garden and enjoy
live music, a cold drink and warm conversation. Our Art’s Festival committee works hard all year to create a
wonderful, fun filled day for our neighbors and visitors.
We are a community of business owners and residents that strive to make Arbutus one of the best towns
around. Our American flag flies every day in the center of town. We have one of the best 4th of July Parades!
We also have an Annual Carnival presented by The Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department in July. Even Santa
comes to Arbutus. Visit our web site for specific dates and times www.arbutus.org
Come back and visit after the festival! You are always welcomed in Arbutus!

Identification Program Provided
on Children and Seniors
Free of Charge by Masons
The Free Mason’s Maryland Safety Education
and Identification Program is a comprehensive
identification and protection program designed
to give families a measure of protection against
the ever increasing problem of missing children.
This program is provided “free of charge” to
every Maryland family who wishes to participate.
MdCHIP is sponsored by the Conference of
Grand Masters of Masons in North America. All
identifying items generated are placed in a pack
and given to the parent or guardian to take home
for safe keeping. If their child becomes missing,
the pack can then be provided to law enforcement
to aid in recovery and identification. The Maryland Free Masons keep nothing but the permission form signed by the parent prior to participation in the event.
What is provided: CD with child’s name, address, height, weight, eye color, hair color, description of distinguishing marks, notes on health
concerns, birth date, parental/guardian contact
information, 3 to 4 photos, a video interview of
the child, digital fingerprints, and DNA sample.
The same information is also available
for seniors.
Please stop by the booth which will be
located in the Children’s Corner.

March of this year, Sorrento of Arbutus celebrated its
50th year in business. The family owned and operated
business was established by Leon Kostinsky in 1965 and
then passed on to his son Michael Kostinsky, and his wife,
Ella, and son, Brandon.
Sorrento’s is a mainstay in this southwestern community
and has many, many regular customers that have
continued to patronize the establishment throughout
several generations. Specializing in eat-in and carryout pizzas (made with fresh dough and a secret cheese
blend) and submarines, Sorrento’s has remained a UMBC
student favorite for decades.
When Sorrento’s opened in 1965, the restaurant was just
on the carry-out side. A laundromat occupied the space
where the existing 100-seat dining room is now located.
Leon Kostinsky bought the laundromat space after they
went out of business to make the expansion.
After 50 years in business, we decided to expand again.
Sorrento of Arbutus opened The Sorrento Café (located
next to the restaurant) in January of this year. The café
serves fresh brewed coffee, lattes, cappuccino’s, fresh
baked goods and build your own smoothie bar.
We look forward to serving the Arbutus community for
many years to come.

Arbutus Arts Festival
Leon Lineburg
Leon was an icon of Arbutus! There probably isn’t anyone who didn’t know and love Leon. Many
local residents were frequently seen enjoying food, beverages or just good, fun conversation at the
Triple L Restaurant each day. Many adults actually worked for Leon when they were young teens
just starting out.
Leon was a man who would do anything for anybody. He enjoyed people and loved Arbutus. He
was involved in many groups throughout the years. He allowed the use of his facility for parties,
meetings and dinners. The Arbutus Arts Festival was a favorite of his, of which he was a part of for
many years. Monthly meetings were always held there and he went out of his way to accommodate everyone. The Arbutus Business and Professional Association is another group who held their
monthly meetings at Leon’s. There are too many groups to even mention but we are sure they all
give thanks for everything Leon did for them.
Ethel “Eck” was Leon’s wife, whom you found at the restaurant day in and day out. Loran their
son grew up and learned the business from his dad and took over towards the end.
Unfortunately, Leon became ill and passed away approximately one year ago. That was a very sad
day for the community of Arbutus as we lost a great man and wonderful friend. About two months
later, his wife of many years also passed away. The business had been up for sale and Loran kept it
going for quite some time.
Leon’s friends, Jim and Sharon Andrews purchased the Restaurant and reopened it as Oak Creek
Café. Leon would be happy to know that friends he cared about may have made changes but are
following in his footsteps with the same location.
We all know Leon will be missed and never forgotten. The day of the festival this year, will feel
quite different to look over and not see his smiling face outside watching the crowds enjoy the day.
Thank you Leon for being a wonderful part of Arbutus!

Animals
Most love them, many have
them as pets. Whether yours is a
frisky feline, or a playful pooch, or
even a slithering snake, most certainly your pet is considered part
of your family. And that is a wonderful thing. However, the Arbutus Arts Festival Committee feels
the need to ask that pets not be
brought to the festival.
Every year signs are posted and people are reminded, however, every year more pets seem to appear. Approximately 60,000 people attend the festival every
year. It only extends along East Drive from Sulphur
Spring Road to the Save-A-Lot parking lot. Anyone who
has attended the festival in previous years knows how
crowded the street can get. It’s difficult enough to
maneuver through all the people, animals only make it harder. Plus, most animals probably don’t like being out in the
sweltering heat, surrounded by so many people, and possibly
trampled on. I have witnessed several fights between animals
as well as many frightened children and adults due to the
presence of some of the animals.
We realize your pets are close to you, but we would like
to ask that you please leave them elsewhere for a few hours
while you attend the festival. It will help to make everyone’s
day a little better.
