Kite Festival gets back to basics

When you head out to a
kite festival, you expect
those flying creations to be
the focus. And along those
lines, your mind may drift
back into simpler times,
when you could simply
enjoy the day and your
family.
That was part of the
founding of the Kite Festival in Lyon Township seven years ago. As the festival grew, more and more
families were enjoying the
fun. Last year, the Kite
Festival was combined
with a carnival and transformed into a four-day
event. But the focus on
kites was lost in the hubbub of everything else
taking place.
So Lyon Events Organization, the nonprofit that
works with Lyon Township
to host various festivals in
the summer, decided to
split the events.
“It’s a nice enough day
for families. With the carnival, we lose some of that
nice feel,” said Jim Chuck,
chair of the Kite Festival
committee. “People in the
community, as well as
people on the committee,
wanted to go back to an
individual event.”
The professional kite
fliers agreed. The Lyon
festival was growing to be
among the bigger ones in
Michigan and was one

Chuck said the Kite
Festival is designed so a
family can enjoy a day at
the park on the cheap. And
that’s part of how the festival got started after the
economy tanked and people were losing their jobs.
“It’s a day where a family of four could come and,
if they brought a picnic
lunch, they didn’t have to
pay a penny,” he said.

has gone high-tech, using
the latest technology and
modern materials, including rip-stop nylon,
rip-stop polyester, Mylar,
plastics TvVek, polyethylene film and fiberglass or
graphite. Even flying
lines, once made of cotton
and easily broken, have
given way to twisted and
braided synthetics of nylon, polyester and Spectra,
which are all available in
various weights and

Just who invented kites
or when, no one really
knows, but most investigators have traced their

Since then, many inventive individuals fascinated with the flight of
birds have discovered
practical uses for kites. In

Entertainment is a big
part of the festivities.

Green Oak resident and

“People really enjoyed
them last year. People
enjoy their contemporary
music and they’re good, a
lot of fun,” Chuck said.
Blaine Fowler, lead
singer and guitarist of the
BFE, said he and his band
mates really enjoyed playing at the festival last
year.
“It was a good crowd,”
he said. “It was a nice mix
of people and it was way
bigger than I thought it
would be.”
The band started when
Fowler found out his
neighbor Matt played the
drums and they started
practicing together. The
band just evolved from
there.
The BFE will perform
starting at 4 p.m. Saturday.
“I’m just looking forward to playing,” Fowler
said. “I hope it’s good
weather, like it was last
year.”

Professional fliers will provide thrills

With some wind, most
people can launch a kite
into the air. Once it gets up
there, however, is a different story.
Does your kite simply
hang up there, beneath the
clouds? Or does it zig and
zag, loop da loop or weave
and bob as it floats in the
heavens?
If it’s the latter, perhaps
you should be joining the
dozens of professional kite
fliers taking part in Lyon
Township’s Kite Festival.
Jon Trennepohl, with
Plymouth-based store
Kites & Fun Thing, said this
year’s festival will have the
largest number of professional kiters yet. And per
usual, a Michigan group
will be the biggest draw.
“The Windjammers are
the headlining team,” he
said.
The Windjammers is an
international group performing at festivals and
competitions throughout
the world.
Gary Maynard, one of
the seven members of the
group, said Lyon’s Kite
Festival is always fun. “We
really enjoy coming out,”
he said. “We’ve been there
almost every year.”
The Windjammers have
performed together for 32
years, whether at the Kite
Festival, Howell’s Balloonfest or at competitions in
Singapore, France or Canada. They are planning a
warm weather show in
Jamaica next year and the
group was recently invited
to Dubai.
“If you told me 30 years
ago I’d be flying a kite with
this group for this long, I
would have told you to go
fly a kite,” Maynard said,
laughing.
Those watching the
Windjammers will see
something more akin to the
Blue Angels. The only dif-

The Windjammers
aren’t the only flying entertainment.
Trennepohl said there
will be national championship single line kite makers with “some incredible
single line kits flying to
music.”
The Detroit Drone Club
will be on hand. “They
actually race quad copters
with 3-D glasses on,” Trennepohl said.
Remote-control kites
will be seen throughout the
weekend, too.
“That’s in case there is
not a lot of wind, so we can
entertain people still,” he
said. “If we have good
weather, it’s going to be a
great time.”

Big community events
don’t run themselves. It
takes a small army of
volunteers to make them a
success. Locally in Lyon
Township, there are three
summertime festivals
planned and the nonprofit
Lyon Events Organization
takes the lead in planning
the fun.
The group is made up
of volunteers and they
turn to other like-minded
souls to lend a few hours
here and there to make
sure there’s plenty of fun
for all.
The first of the three
festivals is just around the
corner, the seventh annual
Lyon Township Kite Festival, scheduled for June
6-7.
In July, the Summer
Funfest, complete with
carnival, makes its return.
The International Ethnic Festival, a new event
for Lyon Township, is
planned for August.
“We need 30 or 40 volunteers for the Kite Festival and more for the Funfest,” said Cathy LaChance, a Green Oak resident and festival
volunteer coordinator.
Work shifts are divided
into two-hour time slots.
There’s still some volunteer opportunities during the Kite Festival or
you can sign up for one of
the other festivals in town.

for a time slot, typically
broken down into two-hour
periods.

It takes a lot of work to
run a festival. Not only is
there a need for space and
manpower to make it happen, it takes money. Luckily, Lyon Township and the
surrounding area have

The basics
As your kite begins to
rise steadily, let out line to
gain altitude. If the line
slackens, take in line. Letting out line will allow the
kite to go lower and further
away. Taking in line will
bring your kite higher and
closer.

require longer pulls. The
actual speed and the length
of the pull depends on the
wind, the size of the kite
and the style of the kite, so
the proper rhythm is best
determined by feel.
Reacting to wind
drops
A kite will stay aloft as
long as the wind is sufficient and the kite remains
stable. Should it begin to
fall or glide toward you,
the wind is insufficient. If
the kite begins to fall, pull
in the line! If it continues
falling or gets closer to the
ground, pull in line quickly
using the hand-over-hand
method.
When the wind gives
out, kites will vary in the
rate they will sink to the
ground. This is usually
determined by their shape
and weight. For instance,
box kites sink rapidly, yet
they respond to a long line
launch as well as any other
kite. Whether or not a kite
stays up depends upon the

When flying your kite,
you’ll be handling your line
much more than the kite.
You’ll have to release and
take in line to avoid knots,
twists and tangles. During
periods of light wind your
line may droop toward the
ground. Reel it in. When
the wind picks up, you may
want to release line quickly
to take advantage of better
wind at higher elevations.
A spool will help. When
using a spool, always take
line off the spool from the
same side from which the
line was put on the spool.
As you wrap the line on the
spool, you put a twist into
the line, but as you remove
the line, the twist comes
back out of the line. If you
remove the line from the
wrong side, you will accidentally double the twists
in the line.

Another effective way
of raising a kite higher into
the sky involves pumping
the line. This is helpful
when winds at the surface
are minimal. A series of
sharp pulls on the flying
line increases the speed of
the airflow across the sail,
which will increase the lift
and raise the kite to a higher elevation. A series of
sharp pulls, separated by
short periods of little or no
line movement, is more
effective than steady
