STYLE CHALLENGE

jenny says...
I love it when Fancy Pants
Designs includes patterned
papers that are easy to fussy
cut. Those cut pieces are perfect for layering or adding interest to your background.
2
1) Build a title using different
fonts or die cut pieces to create
interesting layers.
2) Use foam adhesive to pop up
the title (or part of the title) to
add dimension and definition —
especially when the title is placed
on a busy background.
3) Simple clusters of similar
elements, positioned around the
page, is an easy way to create a
visual triangle.
4) Finish off with rows of horizontal machine stitching for great
texture.
”Ground your design with
strong, repeated shapes, in
an eyecatching color.”

Instructions>>>
Hi there Fancy Pants friends! I’m
Vicki Chrisman, and today I’m
going to show you how to create a fun, 12x12 canvas using the
Burlap and Bouquets Collection.
8
To create this project, I used the
canvas in a different way. By flipping it over and using the backside of the canvas as the work
area, it creates a frame, similar to
that of a shadowbox.
Let’s get started!
.fancypants.design.create.
canvas by vicki chrisman
Collection used: Burlap & Bouquets
1. Paint the outside & the inside edges of the 12”x12” canvas with ivory
paint.
2. Cut x4 strips 12”x 1.2” from polkadot paper. Adhere to the edge of
the frame.
3. Cut x2 strips 5”x1.2” from patterned paper to decorate the frame.
Mitre the corners for a neat finish. 4.
Punch x3, 1” circles from different
patterned papers. Halve the circles
& adhere to left bottom edge of the
frame
5. Adhere 8.5”x8.5” photo to the
center of the canvas.
6. Add a flag topper to the top left
corner of the frame & sticker numerals for the date.
7. Add ephemera flowers to the top
left corner.
8. Stitch a “Wish” ticket to the large
decorative tag, & add sticker letters
9. Tie the tag to a burlap bow & add
to the side of the frame.
9. Add the “Happily Ever After” sentiment & arrow to the photo to complete the canvas.

A BACKYARD STROLL BY KIM WATSON
If you are looking to make a bold statement,
try Kim’s idea of using black stripes and
punchy, red accents. Subtle layers, a muted
palette & clever color placement, keeps the
focus on the photographs of this 8.5”x11”
variation of the sketch.

THIS IS ME BY LAUREL SEABROOK
To get this shabby chic look, cut trendy or
unique shapes from a piece of patterned paper
and scatter them throughout your background
page. Then, add a variety of paper layers beneath your focal point/photo. Next, try some
random stitching to attach pieces to the page
and each other. There you have your shabby
vibe!

Cut a 7” x 12” card base from blue woodgrain patterned paper.
Score & fold x2 flaps at 3.75”from outer edges.
Trim off 1.25”from the top of the outer flaps, this will leave the center panel slightly longer.
Decorate the front cover with a large decorative tag, chalkboard label, ephemera
& chipboard accents.
Create a layered panel on the inside of each flap including a family photograph.
Make use of the decorative envelopes, file folders, chalkboard tags and tickets.
Hide your journaling inside the mini file folder.
Use a white gel pen to doodle on the chalkboard elements for added interest.
Make a statement & add a large chipboard title.

gift box.
Not all gift cards were meant to be given in an
envelope — you might want to put a little more
effort into the presentation of the gift. This easyto-make gift box is a perfect alternative for gift
cards, but also for jewelry or little trinkets.
The beauty of this box is that you don’t have to
have a die cutting machine to create it! Anyone
can make it with these easy dimensions and instructions!
BOTTOM OF THE BOX:
•
•
•
Cut a piece of sturdy card stock or patterned paper, 6.5” wide x 7.75” high.
Score 1.5 inches in around on all sides.
Cut slits about 1.5 inches long at top and
bottom. Trim corners to ease folding.
TOP OF THE BOX:
•
•
•
•
Cut a piece patterned paper, 6.5” wide x
7.75” high.
Score 1” in around on all sides.
Cut slits about 1” long at the top and
bottom. Trim corners to ease folding.
The Artist Edition Burlap Bows make it
so easy to add dimension to the gift box.
Use a large tag from Burlap and Bouquets a collection as your sentiment card.
This gift box took less than a half hour
to make and is sure to make the receiver
swoon.

& As You Wish
I went straight to Fancy
Pants Designs products for
this layout about my crazy
cousin and easily influenceable husband! When designing the page, I built the
color scheme around the
bicycle embellishment.
This month’s featured designer is Mary-Ann
Maldonado. She is a mama, a wife, a ‘wanna-be’ photographer, a memory keeper, a
car-pooler and much more.
She lives in Massachusetts with her goodlookin’, retired, Marine husband. She loves
junkin’ and trying to find space to store it
all. She has a dish fetish, loves root beer,
has a massive, vintage button collection,
and is a paper hoarder.
While stationed in Oklahoma in 2000, she
started scrapbooking with a friend, using
her supplies. She quickly became a fan of
scrapbooking and hasn’t stopped since.
18
.fancypants.design.create.
In 2008, Mary-Ann started traveling with
a friend who owned a small scrapbooking business and was introduced to fresh,
spanking, new product that only encouraged her paper hoarding!
Traveling opened new avenues for MarieAnn and helped her forge lifelong friendships. No longer traveling as much any
more, means she now gets to spend more
time paper crafting.
Mary-Ann is currently designing for A Flair
for Buttons, Eclectic Paperie and The Rubber
Cafe. She teaches locally, runs a local kit club
and sells scrappy goodies online via ETSY.

Starting with a polka dot
gel medium base, added
some stamping and paint
splashes, allowing a touch
of mixed media to peek out
from behind the elements.
I love adding stitching to
my projects for quick texture.
I am never afraid to use
non-traditional boy colors
on my layouts. It would be
a tragedy not to use pink,
purple, gold or flowers :)
