Artscape 2015 Call for Entries for LAZY RIVER The Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts (BOPA) is now accepting applications for artist-designed and executed sculpture, installation, and performance work for LAZY RIVER, an outdoor theme parkinspired, participatory exhibition in Pearlstone Park which will be free and open to the public during the 2015 Artscape Festival. Deadline for submission of applications: Monday, March 30, 2015 LAZY RIVER will consist of approximately 8-12 sculptures, installations, and various rotating live performances along a visually implied “lazy river” in an ode to this pillar of summertime nostalgia and family fun, as well as to the visual look of summer theme parks worldwide. Visitors to Artscape will be able to experience these sculptures and installations as individual sights along the river’s edge, around the river-bend, through choppy, piranha-infested waters, smooth sailing, and everything in between. In keeping with the WATER theme, which will be celebrated throughout this year’s Artscape festival, interested artists should submit a proposal that may draw inspiration from theme parks, water parks, as well as a variety of concepts dealing with the use of water as entertainment. Water can be implied, or actually used as part of a sculpture, installation, or performance. Existing architectural elements of Pearlstone Park may also be utilized. These proposals should also be visually compelling through design, color and scale. We aim to create an active environment, a community of LAZY RIVER villagers if you will, existing amongst artist-designed freestanding sculptural elements, water-propelled contraptions, props, sitespecific and / or participatory installations, rides, mini-stages, and photo-ops. This environment will be accented by the appearance of live performers, with costumed characters interacting with Artscapegoing adults and children alike as they traverse the area encompassed by LAZY RIVER. Some thoughts and requirements regarding your proposals: If the work proposed is participatory in nature, selected artists or artist groups will be asked to manage their project or throughout the festival. This may be done by rotating team members or developing a “schedule” of when the project will be active. Proposed projects should also be designed with safety first, for an outdoor environment, and factoring in heavy use by large crowds attending Artscape. If you plan to utilize ACTUAL water, which is encouraged but not required, these projects will be considered and / or negotiated based upon the following terms: 1 LAZY RIVER Call for Entry / Pearlstone Park / Artscape 2015 -That they are not overly wasteful of water. -That they are fulfilled in accordance to the available water on site. -Since the area of Pearlstone Park is grassy, the use of water should not cause flooding and mud. (In other words, water can be self-contained within the piece, OR utilize a light sprinkle, mist, or occasional stream or spray.) If your piece is mechanical in nature, or utilizes water to operate or function visually, you must be available to monitor your work throughout the festival to maintain its operation. Festival staff will not be responsible for making repairs or adjustments. Proposed projects will need to be installed on-site within two days and should be considered and constructed accordingly. These projects are temporary in nature and BOPA will not be able to underwrite repairs, restoration, etc after its use at Artscape. Always consider the weather! It could rain!
