ARTISTIC MANAGING DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
A TIME OF GIVING
In Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, the character of Vanya talks
about caring for people and how important it is to look out for others,
much like he and his sister have done by caring for their aging parents
during their last years in the family home. Each year, for one week during
the month of February, an actor speaks from the stage after the
performance asking for ‘spare change’ towards the fund-raising efforts of
Theatre Cares, a group of volunteers from the theatre community that
started in 1991 to raise funds and awareness for HIV/AIDS relief. The donations from the Arts
Club come from the audience members who attended One Man, Two Guvnors at the Stanley
Industrial Alliance Stage and The Mountaintop at the Granville Island Stage. Your generosity
with ‘spare change’ amounted to $18,185.05 during that one week at both theatres—a
remarkable achievement and according to Theatre Cares, a record. Five charities are the
recipients of these funds: The Actors’ Fund of Canada, AIDS Vancouver, Positive Living BC,
The Stephen Lewis Foundation, and The Performing Arts Lodge (PAL). The Actor’s Fund
provides emergency financial help to those in the entertainment industry, the next three
concentrate on dealing with HIV/AIDS relief in British Columbia, and, in the case of the
Stephen Lewis Foundation, in Africa.
PAL (the Performing Arts Lodge) is a subsidized rental facility that allows those in the
performing arts industry to have affordable housing in a unique setting in the Coal Harbour
area. The project, which has been recognized with several awards, came into fruition through
the herculean efforts of many, but in particular of Joy Coghill and Jane Heyman. Vanya, Sonia,
and Masha’s aging parents (who were theatre types) might well have lived out their years at
Vancouver’s PAL. Masha is an actress of some renown, so they might all have performed at
PAL as the seven-story structure has an
intimate 100-seat performance space on the
top floor, as well as an outdoor living area
with a remarkable roof top garden. Theatre
Cares thanks those who donated towards
these valuable charities that are part of our
fabric.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
A GIFT FOR THE SOUL
It’s that time of year again at the Arts Club—season tickets! Even with
five shows left at our three stages in this current season, we must start
preparing for the next season, the one that starts in September. The
shows have been selected, the actors are getting cast, and the sets are
being designed. Sometimes staff at the Arts Club can be forgiven for not
noticing when one season ends and a new one starts—and I expect that
will be no different this season, with Les Misérables playing right up until
the end of August and the first show of the new season starting just three weeks later. But I
know you subscribers in the audience have noticed, as we’re in the midst of the renewal
process right now, as well as offering our season ticket packages to our casual ticket buyers.
And indulge me with a quick plug here: if you don’t have a season ticket package, please
check out the information available in the lobby as the savings per ticket when you reserve
for a series of shows at the Arts Club are really substantial!
One thing I’ve learned from talking to our subscribers at the theatre is that it’s not just the
value of getting a season ticket package that appeals, it’s the social aspect. So many
subscribers attend with loved ones and friends, and having those theatre dates scheduled
into your calendars ensures this social connection happens. It often involves a bite to eat
before or after the show, and a stroll along the enticing windows of South Granville or around
the artisan stores and public market on Granville Island, which really is a perfect outing. The
simple act of getting a season ticket package means ensuring you’ve planned these escapes
in your schedule—escapes that would otherwise fall by the wayside in our hectic lives. Of
course, plans can change and dates need swapping, but changes are endlessly free to do at
the Arts Club, as an exclusive benefit of being a patron who chooses to reserve seats to more
of our productions.

continually emotionally moved or inspired
by the works on our stages—and not just by
the shows you might have heard of.
Sometimes the greatest emotional impact
can come from that unknown title you

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT
Christopher Durang is a playwright whose plays include A History of
the American Film (Tony nomination, Best Book of a Musical, 1978),
The Actor’s Nightmare, Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You (Obie
Award; off-Broadway run 1981-83), Beyond Therapy (on Broadway in
1982, with Dianne Wiest and John Lithgow), Baby with the Bathwater
(Playwrights Horizons, 1983),The Marriage of Bette and Boo (Public
Theatre, 1985; Obie Award, Dramatists Guild Hull Warriner Award),
Laughing Wild (Playwrights Horizons, 1987), Durang/Durang (an
evening of six plays at Manhattan Theatre Club, 1994, including the
Tennessee Williams’ parody, For Whom the Southern Belle Tolls), Sex and Longing (Lincoln
Center Theatre production at the Cort Theatre, 1996, starring Sigourney Weaver), and Betty’s
Summer Vacation (Playwrights Horizons, 1999; Obie Award).
His most recent works are Miss Witherspoon, which premiered off Broadway at Playwrights
Horizons in association with McCarter Theater in 2005, Why Torture Is Wrong and the People
Who Love Them, which premiered at the Public Theater in 2009, and a collection of one-act
parodies meant to be performed in one evening entitled Durang/Durang.
Durang is also a performer, and acted with E. Katherine Kerr in the New York premiere of
Laughing Wild, and with Jean Smart in the Los Angeles production. He shared in an acting
ensemble Obie for The Marriage of Bette and Boo; and with John Augustine and Sherry
Anderson has performed his crackpot cabaret Chris Durang and Dawne at the Criterion Center,
Caroline’s Comedy Club, Williamstown Summer Cabaret, and the Triad, winning a 1996 Bistro
Award.
In the early ‘80s, he and Sigourney Weaver co-wrote and performed in their acclaimed BrechtWeill parody, Das Lusitania Songspiel, and were both nominated for Drama Desk Awards for
Best Performer in a Musical.
In 1993 he sang in the five person off-Broadway Sondheim revue, Putting It Together, with
Julie Andrews at the Manhattan Theatre Club. And he played a singing Congressman in the
Encores presentation of Call Me Madam with Tyne Daly at City Center.
In movies, he has appeared in The Secret of My Success, Mr. North, The Butcher’s Wife,
Housesitter, and The Cowboy Way, among others.
He has a BA from Harvard College, and an MFA in Playwriting from Yale School of Drama.
In 1995 he won the prestigious three-year Lila Wallace Readers Digest Writers Award; as part
of his grant, he ran a writing workshop for adult children of alcoholics. In 2000 he won the
Sidney Kingsley Playwriting Award. Grove Press publishes several of his plays. Smith and
Kraus recently published two new collections: Christopher Durang: 27 Short Plays and
Christopher Durang: Complete Full-Length Plays (1975-1995). Grove has recently published
Betty’s Summer Vacation.
Since 1994 he has been co-chair, with Marsha Norman, of the Playwriting Program at the
Juilliard School in Manhattan. He is a member of the Dramatists Guild Council.

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
In the 1980s I performed in Christopher Durang’s play Beyond Therapy,
and I thought the play was fabulously subversive and hilarious. His
humour came from a sense of the absurd and a frustration with
society’s status quo that made perfect sense to someone in their late
teens/early twenties. My parents, I recall, found it weird and disturbing.
But in the intervening years mainstream culture followed the trail
Durang blazed, and caught up. His irreverence, overt sexuality, and the
comedy of non-sequiturs are now common pop culture parlance.
Durang continued to grow his powers and Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is a mature
work: the fringe has become the establishment and is taking a good look around at the
landscape he helped create.
And what of it?
Underneath all the artful silliness in this play Durang asks: what does it mean to feel
connected, truly connected, in the digital age we now inhabit? We have access to more people
and more information than ever before, yet feelings of loneliness and isolation are on the rise.
And what is the personal and societal cost of being disconnected to our own feelings, to
each other, and to nature?
In the play, Vanya laments a cultural innocence that’s been lost in his lifetime. At the same
time, he fully acknowledges the cliche of his nostalgic yearning for the good ol’ days. Though
his despair is comic, it is also honest. Is there a way out of this loop of comfortable complaint
and back into a vital, forward looking, life?
GENTLE REMINDERS
There’s some wonderful Chekovian riffs and
references in this story but you don’t need
to know which Chekov plays the characters
derive their names from because the heart
of the play is decidedly contemporary. So for
the next two hours, turn off your phone,
forget email and texting and facebook, and
just do one thing at a time: just be here, in
this room, with this fabulous cast and... see
what happens.

THE COMPANY
Carmen Aguirre ~ Cassandra
Carmen is an award-winning actor and playwright who has written and cowritten over 20 plays, including Blue Box, which played in Vancouver in the
fall of 2014 at the Arts Club’s Revue Stage. Her first book, Something Fierce:
Memoirs of a Revolutionary Daughter, won CBC Canada Reads 2012 and is
a number one national bestseller. Her second memoir, entitled Mexican
Hooker #1, will be published by Random House in the coming year. She
has over 60 acting credits, including lead roles in the indie favourite Quinceanera, and the
Showcase series Endgame. Carmen is a graduate of Studio 58.
Jay Brazeau ~ Vanya
Jay was last seen at the Stanley as Edna Turnblad in Hairspray, a role he also
played at Toronto’s Prince of Wales Theatre. Other favourite theatre credits
include: the North American tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Wizard of Oz,
in which he played the Wizard, The Goat at Presentation House Theatre,
Urinetown at the Firehall Arts Centre, The Drowsy Chaperone’s Canadian tour,
Fiddler on the Roof at Rubicon Theater in Ventura, CA, King of Thieves at the
Stratford Festival, Death of a Salesman at the Gateway Theatre, and Glengarry Glen Ross at
Theatre London. Favourite movie credits include The Possession, Fathers and Sons, Horns,
Watchmen, Down River, Sex after Kids, Double Jeopardy, Air Bud, and We’re No Angels. On
television, he’s been seen in Cedar Cove, Supernatural, Mr. Young, The West Wing, Eureka, Psych,
Stargate, and The Killing, among many others. Jay directed Poor for the Vancouver Fringe
Festival, Old Love and Three Viewings for Presentation House, and The Passion of Dracula and
Breaking Legs for the Arts Club. He wrote and performed The Cat Came Back, which toured
across Canada. Jay dedicates his performance to Andrew Sellon.

Anna Galvin ~ Masha
Anna is thrilled and grateful to be working with Rachel Ditor and the Arts
Club again, with this wonderful cast. Born in Australia, Anna trained in
Oxford, UK, and now calls Vancouver home. Her local theatre credits
include The Philanderer, Calendar Girls, and Other Desert Cities for the Arts
Club, and Dangerous Corner for the Vancouver Playhouse. Her recent film
and television credits include Warcraft, Once a Upon a Time, Sara’s Choice,
Witches of Eastend, and Supernatural.
Katey Hoffman ~ Nina
Katey is over the moon to be a part of this show! Selected acting credits
include: Celestial Being (Green Thumb), Urinetown (Firehall), Games, You
Will Remember Me (Alberta Theatre Projects), Cool Beans (Solo Collective),
Cold Comfort (Yogurt Theatre), The Government Inspector, Attempts on her
Life, Julius Caesar (Studio 58), and an episode of Almost Human where she
died at the hands of a killer robot. Katey is a Betty Mitchell nominee, a
Calgary Critic’s Award winner (You Will Remember Me), and a graduate of Studio 58.

Susinn McFarlen ~ Sonia
Susinn has been nominated for seven Jessie Richardson Awards and has
won two, for her work in the leading roles of Hello, Dolly! at the Playhouse
and Menopositive: The Musical at the Firehall. Here at the Arts Club she has
been seen in Mom’s the Word, Mom’s the Word 2: Unhinged, To Kill a
Mockingbird, Under the Influence, Sexy Laundry, Henry and Alice: Into the
Wild, and August: Osage County. She has worked across the country at

Susinn is a co-founder of Wet Ink Collective, an organization whose mandate is to promote
gender equity on the stage by mentoring and supporting women writers. Her first play, Since
You Left Us, premiered last fall at Presentation House Theatre in North Vancouver to critical
acclaim. Next up for Susinn is Miss Shakespeare and J. Caesar at the Kay Meek Centre and
Performance Works, and Dirty Old Woman at the Cultch’s Historic Stage.
Robert Salvador ~ Spike
Robert saw his first professional play 15 years ago in this very theatre and
could not be happier to return to the Stanley in such great company. Robert
has received Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards for acting in and
producing Jesus Hopped the A Train at Pacific Theatre and as a part of This
Stays in the Room (a collaborative new work) with Horseshoes and Hand
Grenades, which was awarded the Critics Choice for Innovation Award.
Robert received his MFA in acting from the University of Washington in Seattle and his spray
tan from Kitsilano.

Rachel Ditor ~ Director
Rachel is the Literary Manager for the Arts Club and a freelance dramaturg
and director. Favourite credits include Elizabeth Rex, All’s Well That Ends
Well and The Merchant of Venice (Bard on the Beach); The Tiger of Malaya,
The Fly Fisher’s Companion, Shirley Valentine (Gateway); and Hippies and
Bolsheviks (Alberta Theatre Projects). Directing credits for the Arts Club
include The Matka King, Enchanted April, Here on the Flight Path, The Diary
of Anne Frank, The Optimists, Rabbit Hole, Doubt, Becky’s New Car, The Philanderer, Calendar
Girls, How Has My Love Affected You?, My Turquoise Years, and Other Desert Cities.
Alison Green ~ Set Designer
Alison has been associated with the Arts Club for over four decades. She
has also designed for Carousel Theatre, the Playhouse Theatre Company,
Vancouver Opera, Pacific Opera, and the Belfry Theatre. Recent projects
include Mary Poppins, My Turquoise Years, Intimate Apparel, Hairspray, White
Christmas, The Philanderer (Arts Club); Death of a Salesman, This, Dangerous
Corner (Playhouse); Wondrous Tales of Old Japan, Seussical, The Secret World
of Og (Carousel); The Rape of Lucretia, Idomeneo (Pacific Opera) and The Dream Healer (UBC
Opera Ensemble). Upcoming projects include the return of Les Misérables at the Arts Club.
She has recently retired from the faculty of the UBC Department of Theatre and Film, and is
a life member of the Associated Designers of Canada. Alison would like to recognize the
wonderful support of the production team at the Arts Club—carpenters, painters, props

Sheila White ~ Costume Designer
For the Arts Club: Mary Poppins, Dreamgirls, White Christmas, Don Quixote,
Black Comedy, Altar Boyz, The History Boys, A Christmas Story, Home Child,
and Company. Other recent credits include Brief Encounter, The Miracle
Worker, True West, Top Girls for the Vancouver Playhouse; and for Bard on the
Beach, Henry VI, Richard III, Falstaff, and Henry V. Sheila also designed the
Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Paralympics. She recently finished
shooting Maple Bay Lodge for German TV Station ZDF, Arctic Air for the CBC, a pilot for ABC
/Disney, The Confirmation starring Clive Owen and Russell Madness, and Monkey Up starring
Crystal the Monkey for AirBud Entertainment. She is a member of the Associated Designers
of Canada, IATSE 891, and ACFC West; has an MFA from UBC; and holds a Certificate in
Shoe Technology from The City and Guilds of London and Cordwainers College (Central St.

Adrian Muir ~ Lighting Designer
Previously for Arts Club Theatre Company: Other Desert Cities, My Turquoise
Years, Calendar Girls, all directed by Rachel Ditor. Other recent local credits
include: Late Company, The Concessions and The Romeo Project, Touchstone
Theatre; Cinderella an East Van Panto, Theatre Replacement/The Cultch;
Whose Life Is It Anyway, Realwheels, The Orpheus Project, Music on Main;
Conversations with My Mother and The King & I, Richmond Gateway Theatre.
Upcoming: Love’s Labours Lost and Shakespeare’s Rebel for Bard on the Beach. Adrian is also
an instructor at Langara College’s Studio 58, has been the recipient of five Jessie Richardson
Awards, and is a member of the Associated Designers of Canada.
Murray Price ~ Sound Designer
Murray is a busy producer, composer, and arranger with KOKO
Productions. He studied composition at the Victoria Conservatory of Music
and UVic before working at Vancouver’s Little Mountain Sound Studio. Past
stage work includes: One Man, Two Guvnors, The Odd Couple, Boeing-Boeing,
The Importance of Being Earnest, The 39 Steps (Arts Club); MacBeth, King
John, As You Like It, Twelfth Night, and Much Ado About Nothing (Bard on the
Beach). He has received several IBA and Clio awards for TV and radio work,
as well as four Jessie nominations including outstanding artist achievement.
Allison Spearin ~ Stage Manager
Allison apprenticed at Neptune Theatre after graduating from Dalhousie
University. She spent three seasons at The Stratford Festival, a summer
aboard the Caravan Stage Barge, toured Japan and Singapore with Mermaid
Theatre, and worked at Atlantic Canada House during the 2010 Olympics.
Most recently she stage managed The Odd Couple tour and Saint Joan for
the Arts Club, and has worked at Presentation House Theatre, The Firehall
Arts Centre, WCTC, Ruby Slippers, and Marquis Entertainment. She also
teaches stage management at Douglas College.

Ronaye Haynes ~ Assistant Stage Manager
Ronaye last worked on The Foreigner and The Odd Couple on tour, 4000 Miles
at the Stanley, and Red Rock Diner at the Granville Island Stage for the Arts
Club. This past Christmas, she stage managed Bah! Humbug! for SFU
Woodward’s. Prior to that, she worked on Art at the Gateway Theatre; It’s
Snowing on Saltspring, Boeing-Boeing, 2 Pianos, 4 Hands, and She Stoops to
Conquer for the Arts Club; and 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche at the Vancouver
Fringe Festival. Some of her favourite credits for the Arts Club have been Company, Miss
Saigon, and Suds. She has also had the privilege of working for the Playhouse Theatre, Green
Thumb Theatre, and the Vancouver TheatreSports League. She thanks her family and friends
for their love and support.
Peter Jotkus ~ Assistant Stage Manager Peter is happy to be returning to the Arts Club where most recently he was
the assistant stage manager on One Man, Two Guvnors. He also recently
worked on Helen Lawrence, which toured to the Kammerspiele in Munich
and the Edinburgh International Festival. His lengthy career has taken him
to many of our country’s regional theatres. He spent 12 consecutive seasons
working at the Vancouver Playhouse and was assistant stage manager for
the international tour of The Overcoat. Peter has had a longtime association with The Banff
Centre and was the Program Coordinator for their Professional Theatre Training Program. He
studied at York University and is a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada.

Charlottetown Festival.

The Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage’s rich history began December 15, 1930, with the screening of Lillian Gish’s first talkie, One
Romantic Night. Famous Players bought the Stanley in 1941 and operated the venue until it closed in September 1991 due to declining
revenues. The theatre was purchased by The Stanley Theatre Society in 1997 and opened a year later as an Arts Club Theatre Company
venue. The stunning restoration received a 1999 City of Vancouver Heritage Award.
