Net Neutrality
Giving Back
Net Neutrality has been a hot topic for quite a few years; and on February 26,
the FCC voted in favor of Net Neutrality. However, many people don’t know what
Net Neutrality is or what it means to them.
What is Net Neutrality?
Net Neutrality is coined by many as a “free and open Internet.” Wikipedia defines Net
Neutrality as: “the standard that Internet service providers and governments should
treat all data on the Internet equally.” This simply means that Internet Service Providers
(ISPs) cannot charge high-traffic websites, such as YouTube, for priority access to their
network. Without strict Net Neutrality rules, some are concerned ISPs could also block
websites or services (such as Skype and Facetime) that use a lot of bandwidth.
From a regulation standpoint, Net Neutrality aims to treat the Internet as a
public utility rather than an information service, which is how phone service
is regulated today. In some opinions, this means Internet service could be
subject to new federal, state and other government taxes and fees.
Virus
Warning!
What it Means For You
Net Neutrality rules prohibit: 1) blocking legal content, application, services or
non-harmful devices; 2) impairing or degrading lawful Internet traffic; 3) favoring
some Internet traffic over other Internet traffic in exchange for consideration.
Net Neutrality regulations will help to keep the Internet free and open, allowing
you the freedom you need to learn, innovate and be productive. However, some
worry that if the Internet is regulated by the FCC, they may also try to control what
is and isn’t allowed online.
When Will Net Neutrality Go into Effect?
Net Neutrality rules are set to go into effect this summer. However, there could be
strong pushback from opponents, including Congress, of the new rules between
now and then which could further delay the implementation for years to come.
At Arvig, we believe in an open Internet. We do not block content from our customers
(unless DMCA laws are broken), nor do we choke (slow down) the connection on
high-bandwidth content. We also don’t prioritize any one type of Internet traffic
over another.

Cryptowall Virus
The Cryptowall virus is a Trojan
horse, which means it is hidden
inside of a file or application
that appears to be legitimate.
Once installed, the payload of
the virus encrypts files on a
computer to extort a person
into paying a large ransom for
a de-encryption key.
The ransom amount, which must
be paid in Bitcoin, an encrypted
digital currency that operates
outside of a standard bank,
is shown in a screen message,
which displays a countdown
timer. The usual ransom time
is three days.
While the exact origin of the virus
is not clear, it is typically spread
through infected websites and
e-mail attachments. The best
prevention against Cryptowall is
to have a local and cloud-based
backup of all important files while
practicing safe web browsing and
e-mail habits. If a machine does
become infected with this virus,
it is up to the user to determine
if the encrypted files are worth
paying the ransom.

Supporting Our Communities
Each summer, local non-profit youth groups
represent Arvig in community parades by
carrying our banner and handing out toys
and candy. In return, they earn
a $150 donation for their organization.
We choose groups to represent us based on the
applications received for each town. To include
everyone, we try to pick different groups each year.
Organizations chosen will be notified via e-mail.
All parades are tentative due to weather and other
factors beyond our control. If you would like your
group to be considered, sign up starting May 1
at arvig.com/parades.
