Make time for your annual business checkup
Submitted by chapter member Norm Blieden, CPA
You get an annual checkup from your physician to monitor and manage
your personal health. Shouldn’t you do the same for your business? To
keep your operation in top shape, consider an annual business review.
The benefits of such a review are evaluating current performance and
better planning of future operations.
Some things you should evaluate in an annual business review include the
following:
 Revisit your business strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities. Is your competitive position improving, or are you losing ground?
 How did you perform relative to your business plan? Did you meet or exceed
your objectives? Are sales, profit margins, and cash flow improving?

Get a pulse on your customers. An annual customer satisfaction survey is a
great way to assess performance, obtain insight on potential new products or
services, and to let your customers know how much you value their business.

Evaluate your team. Are you developing a superior team, employing their
unique talents, and training them to improve performance? Do you reward on
merit or simply on seniority?

How effective is your marketing? Are your current methods and channels
working well, or are you simply doing what you’ve always done?
Meet with your insurance agent. Is your coverage adequate and appropriate
for changes in your business activities and acquisitions?


Review your business tax strategy. Identify opportunities for tax savings. Are
you using the right form of business entity? Are you aware of recent changes
in the tax code that might benefit your business?

How is your scorekeeping? Does your monthly bookkeeping help you measure your progress and profitability? Accurate and timely monthly financial
statements are absolutely critical in running any business.
If you are serious about improving your business consider calling us to assist you
in evaluating your operation. Norm Blieden, CPA (626) 440-9511

Report on Legislative Fly-in Day (”Leg Day”)
Fellow Team Talkers,
Another Leg Day has come and gone. This year was the best ever with a 20% increase in attendance over last year.
The day began in the Eureka Room at the State Capitol. Our State President,
Steve VanLandingham, welcomed everyone and introduced our special guest, Pat
Dorais, chief of the Bureau of Automotive repair. Mr. Dorais gave an overview of recent BAR activities and praised ASCCA for creating the excellent working relationship
we have with BAR.
Jack Molodanof, ASCCA attorney, was next on the agenda. Jack briefed us on the
bills we were going to be discussing with our elected officials. He also spoke about
some of the "do's and don'ts" when meeting with Legislators.
Afterwards, we moved on to our legislative appointments - 86 meetings with Legislators were scheduled for our group by ASCA staff. We were discussing three bills with
the Legislators and their Staff - SB8 (Hertzberg): this bill would extend a sales tax to
our labor operations; SB3 (Leno): this bill would increase the minimum wage in California; and AB873 (Jones): this bill would give BAR the authority to redefine what constitutes a "minor repair" in our industry. In addition, we provided the Legislators a copy
of the ASCCA Telematics Guiding Principles. Our members did an outstanding job
communicating our concerns to their elected representatives.
Our special guest speaker during our luncheon period was Assembly Member
Brian Jones (kudos to John Epstein of Chapter 24 for confirming Mr. Jones). Mr.
Jones is the author of AB873 - one of the bills we are supporting. He gave a lively
presentation and is definitely in our corner fighting for our industry.
A special thank you to ASCCA Board Member, Jeff Stitch, who attended Leg Day
even though suffering a heart attack two weeks prior to the event. NOW THAT'S A
DEDICATED MEMBER! Jeff also gave us a passionate talk about how important Leg
Day is to him and why all of us should participate in communicating with our elected
officials. Thanks Jeff and thanks to everyone who attended and made this the best
Leg Day ever.
Respectfully,
James Justus

Is Business Coaching Right For Your Shop?
by Mike Giblin - Apr 27, 2015
Whether you’re a new shop owner looking to increase your car count, or an industry veteran hoping to build
loyalty from your existing customer base, hiring a business coach to help you achieve your goals might be
worth considering.
A business coach can add value in a number of ways. First, while it’s
true that nobody knows your business better than you, having an outside perspective can be beneficial and provide fresh insight into solving
existing problems. Coaches can also spend time evaluating and attacking issues, which is often difficult to do when your main focus is running
the day-to-day operations of a shop.
Perhaps most important, -business coaches often possess skills that
shop owners may lack. Maybe your strength is -fixing cars or selling service. While those are great -assets, you may be out of your league
when it comes to marketing your shop or managing finances. A good
coach will fill that knowledge gap and apply his or her expertise to improve your -business.
A business coach can also help you prepare for the future by assisting with -essentials such as establishing
retirement accounts and succession plans. There’s no reason to cling to the old model of being married to a
shop and working there until you die. Instead, partner with a coach to build a profitable business that can
function well even when you’re not there.
I’ve worked with many coaches and can tell you that there are a wide variety of specialties and philosophies
from which to choose. The key is to find a good fit for you and your specific -situation. Here are some strategies to keep in mind during the selection process:
Let history be your guide. If you want a good idea of how a coach will perform for you, consider his or her
track record with other shop owners. Ask about how many clients they have, how long they’ve had those cli
ents and what they achieved. -Request information on past objectives they promised to meet and whether
they delivered. Look for parallels with your own struggles or goals.
Let’s say your shop is grossing $1 million before taxes, but your goal is to push that number to $2 million
within three years. You’ll need to know if the coach you’re considering has accomplished that type of growth
in the past and whether the timeline you’ve set is realistic.
Beyond reaching sales goals, you’ll want to select a coach who’s adept at navigating the issues that are
troubling your shop. If building loyalty is your sticking point, a coach whose experience is focused on helping
new owners capture new customers may not be the best fit.
Check the facts. A coach with a successful history should have no problem providing a list of past clients
and contact information for those clients. This list serves as a badge of honor for a coach and should help
you eliminate any doubts or questions about a coach’s credentials. Be sure to ask past clients about the
(Continued on page 6)
Foothill 5 Forum
5
(Continued from page 5)
metrics they used to evaluate success and whether their coach employed the same measurement to judge
performance.
Get a second opinion. Working with a coach can involve a large commitment of time and money, so it’s cru
cial to find a coach who aligns with your personality and business -approach. To make the best decision,
take your time selecting a coach and interview a variety of candidates -before narrowing the field. Start by
conducting a phone or online meeting and then schedule a follow-up call or meeting once you’ve gathered
more information. Attending a boot camp or seminar sponsored by the coach you’re considering might also
make sense to gain a better idea of how they work with shop owners and -convey key tactics.
Watch for red flags. While it takes time to see results when working with a coach, be wary of coaches who attempt to lock you into long contracts without -offering -opportunities to exit the deal if things go awry.
It’s also wise to avoid coaches who plan to narrowly focus on just a single strategy. For example, to drive
revenue up, a coach might recommend increasing your average repair order through more aggressive sales
efforts. While that might lead to an increase in sales, after awhile, that tactic might alienate customers who
will feel like they’re constantly being upsold. You want a coach who is going to suggest multiple approaches
to achieve your -objectives.
As a former shop owner, I also get asked if I believe it’s important for a coach to have owned a shop. I don’t
think it’s essential, but I do think it’s advantageous to work with someone who has been on the front lines of
the business and can show success at -running a shop. I also tend to recommend working with coaches
who bring a broad-based approach to the table, rather than those who specialize in a certain aspect of the business.
Of course, selecting a coach is only half the battle. You can hire the best coach in the world, but if you fail to
truly commit to working hand-in-hand with this individual to change your business, you’ll end up wasting your
time and money. Remember that a coach can’t flip a switch and produce instant improvements.
Achieving change is usually a long process that can involve a number of steps, sometimes including hiring
new staff and training them on new policies and practices. It takes patience and discipline to stay the course
and follow through on your coach’s recommendations. However, those who remain dedicated to the process
should see big dividends on their -investments.

Mike believes that the auto repair -industry requires an amazing skill set to be successful and he is excited to share what he knows with shop owners. Mike can be reached at [email protected].

HOW TO JOIN TEAMtalk (TT):
(If you are not on TEAMtalk, you are missing one of the premier benefits of your membership in ASCCA. Instant access to hundreds of shop owners who want to see you succeed and
help you get solutions to any issue you face.)
1. Read the rules and etiquette governing TEAMtalk.
2. Complete the application form to subscribe to TEAMtalk.
RULES
TEAMtalk was set up as an open forum for members to use to discuss issues of relevance to the
membership or the automotive industry at large. Questions and posts should be limited to those
things that are of interest to the membership at large. This is a member-to-member discussion list.
TEAMtalk is NOT intended for use as a communications vehicle to reach the ASCCA Staff, ASCCA
Committees, ASC Insurance Services or the ASCCA Board of Directors. Any items related to staff,
committee, insurance or board need to be addressed to the appropriate parties directly using the
contact page. This mechanism has been set up so that you don't have to be on a board or committee email distribution list to have your message forwarded. Simply choose the party(s) you wish to
contact and the message will be routed appropriately. Please do not post technical (mechanical repair, etc) questions to this forum. Use the iATN forum for that.
This list is only open to current, paid-up Regular, Associate and Educator members of ASCCA.
Participation in this list is a privilege and is NOT a right of membership.
There is a moderator who takes care of technical issues. There is also a board of advisors made up
of members, who assist the moderator and who decide if members are subject to disciplinary action,
(removal from the list), if found to be in violation of the rules.
LIST ETIQUETTE
The following industry standard guidelines were set up to help TEAMtalk operate in an orderly fashion. Violations are subject to disciplinary action and which may include removal from the list.
1. Refrain from "flaming" or using profanity. "Flaming" is sending back angry, biting responses,
"getting personal" and calling people names or otherwise belittling them. The use of sarcasm,
profanity, "challenges" or other unpleasantness is not appreciated by list members. Remember,
posts are seen by EVERYONE, not just the person you are responding to.)
2. What goes on TEAMtalk stays on TEAMtalk. (TT is meant to be an in-house discussion group for
ASCCA members. Although there is an expectation of "privacy" NOTHING sent via email is truly
private. Please do not forward messages! REMEMBER - your behavior reflects on the association as a whole and your messages get around to outside entities whether you want them to or
not. Maintain your professionalism at all times!)
3. Stick to relevant topics authorized for TEAMtalk. (Topics appropriate to TT are matters of interest
to the membership at large meaning industry information, announcements, questions about your
shop, chapter activities, legislative issues, etc. Emails directed to staff, directors or committees
should be sent via our contact page. From time to time, matters related to individual ASCCA
members (i.e., notification of illness or death), are permitted.)
4. Do not post FWDs, Jokes, Spam, Virus warnings, etc. to TEAMtalk.
5. Send relevant responses to TEAMtalk. (Don't send "support" posts (such as "kudos" "amen!" or
Foothill 5 Forum
13
"right on!") to the entire group. Please don't send "TEST" messages if you are wondering if you're
still on TT or to see if TT is working. Please address those questions to the list moderator at
[email protected].)
6. Keep TEAMtalk posts short and concise.
7. Do not post copyrighted material to TEAMtalk.
8. Use appropriate subject lines. (PLEASE use "TT:" at the beginning of your subject line.)
9. Sign your posts. (Many of you have obscure e-mail addresses that give no clue as to who you
are so please sign your first and last name at the bottom of each post.)
10. Please, no commercials or sales pitches on TEAMtalk.
HOW TO POST MESSAGES
If you are an authorized participant on TEAMtalk, send an email message to the following email address - [email protected] and it will go to everyone on the list. Hit "Reply to all" when replying
to messages. If you have not been authorized yet, or if you are sending from an e-mail address different from the one you subscribed with, the message will be bounced back as undeliverable. If you
change e-mail addresses, your posts will be bounced back and you will not receive any mail from
TEAMtalk until you notify the list moderator.

Get a chance to hear all the latest news from the B.A.R. and the

We will have great food, raffle prizes and we'll be
taking bets on how long our shop car can last

It'll be a blast!
