Monday, February 16. The following Saturday, February 21, we had 3,000
attendees. At one point or another, all of these guests stopped by our Engineers
Week activities. The activities attracted all sorts of guests, from toddlers to adults,
and included soil reinforcement, circuit design, foil boat construction, robotics,
and hoop glider design, just to name a few. Volunteers ranged from middle
school students presenting their own Future City projects to project engineers.

ASCE North Jersey Branch Newsletter—Spring 2015

A Message from the President
Fellow North Jersey Branch Members,
I hope you are well and endured the deep freeze of the last few
months. Hopefully we have seen the worst of the bitter cold and it’s all
behind us.
Since the beginning of the year, we at the North Jersey Branch have
been busy holding technical dinner meetings and planning for a few
more before the year’s end. In January, we hosted a joint dinner
meeting with ASHE North/Central Jersey Chapter on the Pulaski Skyway
Rehabilitation Update at Snuffy’s Restaurant in Scotch Plains, which was
very well attended. Following that, COPRI hosted their second event in
February on Waterfront Edge Design presented by Roland Lewis from
the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance at the Crowne Plaza in Fairfield.
We have a number of technical programs lined up through June, when
we conclude our 2014-2015 session. However, due to severe weather
in the northeast region, we had to make some changes to our original
schedule to accommodate our presenters. We will continue to keep
you informed of our upcoming events through email as well as postings
at our website www.ascenjb.org.
I would like to conclude today by assuring you that your Branch is
served by a dedicated executive board both at the Branch and younger
member level. They have found time to serve their profession in the
midst of their busy schedules and demanding jobs as well as personal
commitments. So, next time you see a member of the Board, please
express your appreciation for their service.
Once again, I urge your engagement and involvement with the Branch
and ASCE, which helps our Society remain relevant and our profession
vibrant.

The Office - Montclair
619 Bloomfield Ave, Montclair, NJ 07042
The ASCE North Jersey Branch YMG held a Professional Development Event geared at helping younger members craft an
effective "Elevator Pitch" for to potential employers, clients, team partners and peers. An "Elevator Pitch" covers how to
present what is unique about your individual skills and experience or the services your company can offer. This initial
pitch is critical to enticing employers or clients to want to know more about you and/or your firm with the goal of growing long lasting business relationship. Following the presentation, a social hour was held to practice some of the techniques taught in the class.

On Saturday, January 17th, middle school students from across the state descended upon Rutgers’ Livingston Campus Student Center to compete in the NJ Regional Future City Competition. Students work from September through January to design a city of the future using SimCity, write a technical essay, and build a scale model of a section of their city. Working in
teams of three, the students present their model to judges for the chance to represent New Jersey at the National Finals
February 14th-18th in Washington, DC. The national winner spends a week at NASA Space Camp in Alabama! This year’s NJ
Regional winner is Marepolis from Heritage Middle School in Livingston, NJ!
At the NJ Regional Competition, in addition to presenting their cities, students attended sessions led by PSE&G, the Project
Management Institute, and Engineers Without Borders. They also met college students from engineering groups and spoke
with professionals from engineering firms, societies, and utility companies.
The competition, in its 8th year in NJ, was again a success. Approximately half of nearly 80 competing teams were awarded
prizes, ranging from tours of NJ Turnpike Authority and NJ Transit facilities, to tickets to Six Flags and a NJ Devils game, to
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) grants for the top five teams. Future City has donated close to
$30,000 to teachers in the form of grants over the past eight years.
Future City would like to thank ASCE NJ Section and Branches, as well as all the firms and professionals who donated their
time or resources to help make this event a success. As a program run completely by volunteers, it would not be possible
without your support! If you or your firm would like to get involved, you can visit our website for more information
(www.futurecity.org/new-jersey) or contact the NJ Region Coordinator, Scott Lubarsky, at [email protected].

Ski & Snowboard Trip: January 24, 2015
North Jersey YMG, Lehigh Valley YMF and Metropolitan Section YMF hosted
what’s become an annual day of skiing or snowboarding at Camelback Mountain
in Tannersville, PA.
This year, more than fifty ASCE members and guests hit the slopes for the event,
which continues to be a favorite activity for both younger members, and more
seasoned professionals and their families. If you missed out this year, be sure to
watch for information about next year’s Ski & Snowboard Trip.
YMG at Fair Lawn STEM Night: March 11, 2015
On March 11, three ASCE Younger Members participated in Fair Lawn High
School’s annual STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Night, teaching high school students about what it takes to become an engineer and what it
means to be a civil engineer. Sunny Gerlach joined ASCE YMG board members Steve Alpert, P.E. and Carlos Lopez, P.E. in briefly describing the varying types of civil
engineering work they do and how they became civil engineers. The presentations
were well-attended and the high schoolers enjoyed their evening!
